Coachin Shocker or NOT

Post by ndirishfighting »

From word of mouth of what I have heard the boys from Greenway are not gonna play next year if the same head coach is back again.
So Im curious would they have enough for a team then.

The word around here is that greenway is not offering hockey if they want to play they either play for grand rapids or hibbing.

Not sure if that is true but have heard lots of talk about it.

I've heard from a reliable source Greenway fully intends to have a hockey team in 09-10. Was decided at this Coleraine meeting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke5Mr5eC ... re=related

This constant whining by some of the Greenway hockey players is a good example of why Greenway is not competitive now. If these players don't get their way it's "the coach" that is the problem not them. Unfortunately, this comes from the parents. Unless the parents start letting the high school coach run the program, Greenway will never return as one of the state's better programs. It isn't just the decline in enrollment, it's the decline in the quality of the kids.

At the large-school HS level it makes sense to have a coach in charge and a wall protecting him from the parents. Greenway? They aren't doing very well so I can only assume they need any and every decent player they can find.

In youth hockey we hear all the time about how parents are a big problem. From my perch it seems like a program's inability to deal with the parents they have is more the culprit.

Kids don't have the money to register and they can't get to practices and games on their own. Like it or not, parents are part of youth hockey. Ideally people need to make sure parents are happy too. Communication is a nice starting point.

Is it the parents teaching the kids? Some of the misguided passion in sports is amazing.

No matter how you try to communicate with some parents it will never be enough. In the short run accepting the whiners might seem to be the right thing to do, but in the long run you are only encouraging that type of behavior and you will continually have the same problem year after year. Also, these whiners poison the team concept. It's always easier to point the finger at someone else if your kid is unhappy than taking a good look at the kid (yourself if you are the parent) and his behavior.

From what I have heard, some players want to quit because of Anton. Some other players are relying on Garret Orhn, if Orhn leaves so will they. Honestly, though, what's the kid to do if he doesn't know if they will have enough players to fill a decent team? These two examples definitely prove the Raiders inablility to have any "Self Reliance". I will also add that if these kids do quit, they will regret not playing their last year(s) of hockey for the rest of their lives.

17 varsity players next year, no JV, 2 Bantam teams, 2 Pee Wee teams, 3 squirt teams, 5 mite teams. Let em be for a couple of years and Greenway will be back to full strength. The no JV is supposedly for 2 seasons. GR will play Greenway only once next season.

If a coach can not handle a parent, they shouldn't be a coach....

Who is Grand Rapids going to add to their schedule with the vacant spot? It would be cool if they added Theif River Falls, or if it's a twin cities team maybe add Burnsville, Holy Angels, Hill Murray, White Bear Lake, Cretin Durham Hall, or Woodbury.

Do you think they could compete with those teams?

Pat Guyer will apply for this job. if he hasn't already. along with bird lawson. but after this week with all the trouble 2 or 3 players have gotten into. and with orhn having a broken wrist its going to be tough.(depending on how long he is out)

What some people dont understand is that if Greenway doesn't have a varsity team, within 5 years Greenway will not exist. If the varsity team combines with Grand Rapids, Rapids wants the whole rec program. you will see familys sending their kids to grand rapids at very young ages. greenway has to pull it together tough it out for 2 seasons and maybe they could rebound.

No More Greenway?

Post by greenway1969 »

Whether Greenway fields a team this year is 50/50 at best. Pat Guyer is the coach and he is trying to put a team together. Niper-hawkfan is right. If Greenway does go with Rapids, the only program from youth to high school will be Rapids. Rumor has it they don't want Greenway unless they get control of the youth progam too. I can't say that I blame them. Also, Greenway only had 56 students in their freshmen class. Things don't look good.

you are correct. it should have been all set and done with by the end of march. their is a lot of unorginization taking place, players saying yes i will be playing one day, and no i wont the next. right about now its a mess. they have to pull it together if they want Greenway to continue. If Greenway doesn't put some kind of high school team on the ice this year, you mines well just lock the doors to the GHS and combine everything with either NK or GRHS. even with offering sports the enrollment is declining, imagine what it will be like without hockey. (not saying that is overly a lot of people just for one sport) but for a little school you will see over 100 families which just cant happen. they will shoot over 5 miles, and thats just for hockey. THEY HAVE TO PULL IT TOGETHER

Greenway

Post by northwoods oldtimer »

It sounds like the program is all but finished from what I hear. Defections at the youth level. Loss of numbers and a very slim varsity roster do not sound like there is much hope for the future of Greenway hockey. It is sad to see this occur. Open enrollment and the new association rule for play where you are schooled just precipitates this type of thing occuring.

problem

Post by countryboy »

This program has been in trouble for the last 5-6 years, long before the new rule. The fact is if you offer a GREAT opportunity to play the numbers would be just fine. The new rule just took the control away from the people that work harder at not allowing kids to enjoy the game as it is everywhere else and put it into the hands of the parents. (Not every program is run in a manor that this is a problem, but at Greenway it has become that way) Nobody wants to ask the real question of why hockey driven families have left this program in a steady stream over the past 5 years. Sometimes the truth hurts and its easier to blame the families that have moved on, not to a place where the grass is greener but to where there is grass. I hope Greenway can figure it out very soon or the program is done. I hope it works out for the kids that are still there. Just to clarify - It is not the new rule that has killed Greenway, Greenway is killing Greenway.

Thanks for the insight on the Greenway program countryboy. That is very sad to hear that news. I was not even aware the problems were that bad internally.
