Sorry.
I still don't feel anyone needs to know unless the players want to tell.
I believe most head coaches also function as an administrator for their program. A large portion of those administrative responsibilities would be the control and distribution of the scholarship money available to them. I don't think it's a question with any definitive answer available. The number of players receiving full rides will differ from team to team...even year to year for the same team I would bet. To me, controlling that money is one of the toughest, most demanding tasks for any D-I coach...per recruiting, planning / having scholarship money available two years from now (example) for a player(s) you REALLY hope to recruit. In my opinion it basically amounts to a strategical "chess match" between coaches to allocate that money wisely in an attempt to out recruit your opponents. Tough job.
I would definitely agree, scholarship information on any individual (specific) is between them and the coach, and their business only.
Top / full number of scholarships allowed per team is 18...I think.
hockeywild7 wrote:NO, my original question had nothing to do with Minnesota kids. I was asking in total how many players are getting full rides? I don't care who they are, where they are from or how good they are. All I was asking is how many girls are on full scholarships vs. paritals. Nothing personal about any player or program. I don't care if a girls plays D3 or D1, it is an accomplishment. I will say that there are some D3 players who are getting more financial aid than some D1 because of their grades. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned from that.
I agree that athletic achievement without a focus on academics is counter productive, but good hockey and good grades are not mutually exclusive. I am sure many of the D1 players also qualify for academic scholorships as well.

Coaches keep the scholarship amounts very private. The problem is the athletes all talk amongst themselves. It's a lot like salaries. You normally don't discuss them with other employees for a couple of reasons.
1. You might find out your worth less than the other guy
2. You have no idea if your being told the truth
With that being said many players think they know what size scholarships other team mambers are receiving. That information gets out to scouts and family members. Rarely, will a kid getting a full ride not brag about it.
SuperStar wrote:So how many D1 & D3 Womens Hockey programs in the US are there..?
And can they ALL offer some type of scholarship, being Full, partial ect...???
Look at my post on page 3 of this thread. I have some financial stuff plus other. There are 35 D1 schools and 45 D3 schools that offer women's ice hockey. D1 are allowed 18 scholarships per team. A school can be fully funded or not (budget driven), you would have to check with the particular school, NCAA rules do not allow athletic scholarships for D3 but merit and need scholarships are be used (particularly in conferences that are competitive). Most of the 18 scholarships are taken up by existing team members and graduation generally opens up money. If you have a choice pick a school that you like that has the largest grade that you are in high school. If you are a sophomore, pick a college with the largest sophomore class. That way more money will open up when you graduate from high school. Hockey is not a head-count sport so scholarship money can be split between players (unlike basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics).

Great first pick up for Coach Means and the new program. Kari is a top player who went the Thoroughbred route after 2 years at Woodbury HS. She is a leader on and off the ice and one of the top forwards in the class of 2010.

I agree. Great choice. Kari is a great player and great kid.
Update from Hux on College Board. There are 10 from MN and maybe another 4-5 girls who have made decisions but not public so MN is off to a great start for the year.

Girls hockey: Blaze's Barnes to play Division I at rising eastern school
Senior Lauren Barnes will take her talents out east next fall to play Division I in an emerging women's hockey program.
Barnes recently made a verbal committment to play at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. The Lakers were the NCAA runner-up last year to Wisconsin in the school's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four.
Mercyhurst beat Minnesota in the national semifinals last year 5-4. This year, the school is ranked No. 2 in the nation behind Wisconsin in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason rankings. The Gophers are No. 3, followed by Minnesota-Duluth at No. 4.
This winter, Barnes will entering her final season with the Burnsville girls hockey team. Last year, the play-making center led the team in assists with 33, adding 19 goals in the team's 17-8-2 season (14-3-1 in the Lake Conference).
Barnes had 12 goals and 22 assists as a sophomore and scored 10 goals and dished out six assists as a ninth-grader.
Barnes narrowed her college choices to three eastern schools - Mercyhurst, Vermont and Connecticut. She decided on Mercyhurt because the school is emerging as one of the premier programs, not only on the East Coast, but in the nation as well. She was told she can play right away as a freshman if she's earned the ice time.
Barnes' older brother, Tyler, a 2007 Burnsville graduate, signed a national letter of intent to play Division I hockey at Wisconsin out of high school. However, Tyler has spent the last two years in the United States Hockey League with the Waterloo Black Hawks. He had nine goals and 17 assists in 55 games last season.

Great pick up for Mercyhurst! Any word on her team mate Amanda Colin's plans - she is also a very top player?
This was a post last spring - I have added those who have publically committed (there are some on this list committed but not public) so many good players still available MN has 12 committed now.

Until I read differently with my own eyes, I won't doubt your prior thoughts on the topic...it wouldn't surprise me.
I have heard there is some serious interest in an Eastern team or two involved as well.

Includes Gina McDonald of Irondale to Harvard - well deserved! Great opportunity for her and I have to believe she is thrilled to have the same chance that her sister has had to play great hockey and get a world class education at Harvard.

So this is totally irrelevant, but I was just reading back to a post from when the current seniors were sophomores. A few people had doubts that any chaska girls would be going D1.
Dani Williams is committed and I know for a fact that Catie Ladner has been getting offers. Congrats to these girls for proving those few people wrong!

There may or not be validity to your question, but I find the manner in which you phrase it to be very mean-spirited. The student athlete of whom you speak plans to major in chemistry at the U, so unless your theory is that she is planning to manufacture her own drugs, she doesn't exactly fit the profile of the first sentence. As for her performance on the ice, she is by no means a stiff. Don't be so quick to repeat what you have heard that has no factual basis.
I think we all agree that there should be room on the Gopher roster for players from our state. The gray area appears when the question, "How much room?" is asked. 100%, like the Doug Woog model? That has never been done on the women's roster. Is it better to have a 90% Minnesotan roster than is not likely to contend for a championship, or a 50% in-state roster that is a contender? Should men's basketball or women's volleyball operate under the same constraints? I'm fine with this discussion taking place, but I do not like when adults feel the need to take personal shots at kids along the way.
Melvin44 wrote:I also wish local/American girls would be considered first before taking a foreign player. It seemed to work well in the past. Maybe he felt pressure losing his star girls to ND?
The two Finns were signed far in advance of the Lamoureuxs deciding to leave, so I don't think there is any correlation. Their addition makes the team better. Balancing the inclusion of local talent with fielding the strongest roster possible is a judgement call. Is the coach's job to put the best team on the ice or put the most Minnesotans possible on the ice? Yes, we'd like both, but in some recruiting classes, they won't be one and the same.

I think putting as many Minnesota girls on the ice as possible could make it the best team. Of couse this is my opinion. I personally think highly of the coach and feel he can do what ever he feels is best for his team. My point was to give a Minnesota girl a chance before a foreign player. I will always be a fan and attend many games. I just love watching our Minnesota girls succeed. I'm a homer what can I say.
I'm not sure which Minnesota recruiting class would be considered weak.

I like to watch local kids play for the Gophs as well. I'd say over the brief history of the program, Minnesota kids have been well represented. How many foreign players have they had? Four year players: Muzerall; Clarke; Bills; Coulombe; Ross; Gagnon. Those who stayed less than two years: Palinsky; Oonincz; Ashley; Wornell; Chartier. Current Gophers: Francis; Lura; Jalosuo; Räty. Over 13 years, that isn't a lot. I'd guess there has been at least four times as many players from Minnesota.
Melvin44 wrote:I'm not sure which Minnesota recruiting class would be considered weak.
There are factors that can cause the coach to look elsewhere w/o a Minnesota HS recruiting class being weak. Sometimes the class doesn't have a player at the position that the Gophers need who wants to enroll in Minneapolis. Sometimes our high schools produce a class that has great depth but lacks the marquee players that are available elsewhere. When I look at those that Frost has brought in who aren't from Minnesota over the last two seasons -- the Lamoureux twins, Bozek, Räty, and Jalosuo -- they all have international experience and can flat out play the game. I don't know that there is always a Muzerall, Ross, or Bozek coming out of Minnesota high schools at the same time.
I guess is we'll just have to disagree. Which is ok. I think the next couple of recuiting classes are strong 2010 F's Johnson, Barnes, Buie, D's Williams, Scholzen etc, etc. and next year 2011 F's Lorence, Michelleti, Kuehl, Burns, Ness and D Ramsey, Hamner, Illikanen etc, etc. I would just like to see American girls get the opportunity to play for the gophers before a foreign player. You keep forgetting that part.
Like I've stated before I will always be a fan and would support the coach no matter what. Just would rather see American players given the opportunity. How many Americans are given full scholorships to play over seas for free?
