I agree with Melvin on this one. I don't know who made the "all-star" team and really do not care but why is it political if a certain amount of Roseville, Hopkins, OS, Stillwater ect... girls made the team. Being they had top ranked teams last year I would have to assume these teams would have a fair amount of players on the all-star team. Does it really matter in the long run if your kid did not make the "all-star" team in this league? Remember for alot of these girls hockey will be a foregone conclusion in a few years. If they are lucky some will get a chance to play at the college level for 4 more years and a small percentage of those might have the opportunity to coach at some level.

I think it would be fair to suggest that it is some what absurd to be critical of a program that is still in its infancy. It’s obvious that you are not going to have system that will appease everyone. And the pure act of trying to so will alter the intended purpose either positively or negatively… but surely not in a direction that follows a consistent and reasonable course. Last year it seemed as if they formulated the teams based largely on an invite basis with tryouts used only to round out the teams. That process didn’t seem go over so well (unfair I guess) so this year they had a process that, grandfathered in the returning players and for everyone else you were required to tryout… no exceptions, I guess. Which personally, I found to be an erroneous plan, since this put them in a position to not get the best players available… which one could say is what this league should be about. Then again it’s only my opinion and really, who am I (or anyone else for that matter) to question their motives? It’s their league they can do with it what they may.

When you strip away the politics, the personal bias (yes they do exist, it’s only human nature) and ultimately the hurt feelings…the bottom line is that it is the best thing going and a step in the right direction, regardless of your own personal situation.

I did agree with MF's first 3 points though.

Also how about rotating the goalies with all 3 teams. It was unfair for our Outstate goalies this year because we were so many short every game. They were awsome.

The other thing would be forget the Outstate label and go with 3 even teams. Some of the better outstate girls don't play and it's very hard for the others to make every game.

The league will get better and it's a great opportunity for the girls.

It's unfortunate that the attendance was sketchy--the league should address this for the future. Easy solution is to allow the kids one or two non-emergency absences, and then give them the boot after that. There are plenty of hungry underclassmen who'll drop everything to play in this league without any noticeable dropoff in 'talent'. (Am I the only one who knows dozens of very good players who place hockey as priority #1 with everything else a distant second--including dances, movies, homecoming, soccer, boyfriends? The girls who at a moment's notice will cancel other plans to play in meaningless games in a meaningless tournament on a team thrown together to just to fill out a bracket when a team drops out? I was assuming this league was filled with just such girls, but apparently not.) Problem--if the star player from Biwabik is replaced by the sixth best player from Stillwater, there will be howls of 'favoritism' from the north. Tough.
Note: I use Biwabik as an example of small-town Minnesota--no animals were harmed in the making of this post. I don't even know if anybody in Biwabik plays hockey.

About the cries of favoritism. I don't buy it. One possibility is that star players from very small programs are not used to being treated as 'one of the girls'. When they don't receive star treatment, they feel oppressed. On the other hand, top players from the powerhouse suburban programs have never been treated special--there are always younger studs nipping at their heels, plus there are no easy goals or wins in the Lake, Suburban East, Classics, etc. It's not hard to imagine that the sixth best player from Stillwater, although not as highly 'skilled', is actually more valuable to a team in this Elite league than the star from Biwabik. It's very easy to imagine that they work harder and play with other top players better. Editorial note: There's nothing accidental or lucky about Stillwater's two recent state championships. Favoritism gets you nothing in Section 4AA or at the state tournament (although the Ponies do seem to get all the calls when you play them at the St. Croix Rec Center)

Too many decisions in this league are made by a person who has a bias towards certain player's or schools.
Did politics play a roll? I think you need to ask these few questions to determine if it did. I was at more then a handful of games this year and last. Most of these girls are qualified to play in the All Star games so if you have a bias to a school or a program it will show.

If you ask these questions and you think that politics plays a roll in this league... Then don't try out or play for this league next year.

1. Were the girls told they could miss games?
2. Were they told they needed to make a commitment?
3. How many girls missed a number of games and still made this team?
4. How many Jr. White Caps were cut?
5. How many OS players were cut?
6. How many Roseville players were cut?
7. How many Stillwater players were cut?
8. How many Hopkins players were cut?
Would you be happy/happier if the players on 4-8 made up one team and only one team, and they played against the others?

Okay, I'll answer question 7.

7. How many Stillwater players were cut? All of them. Some did not make it past the try out

Question 5: I don't know. But if the answer is 0 or very few, it might be that it just means OS is doing its job, eh? Or that the type of kid who attends OS is the same type who excels when all the best are gathered together, and commits to the league 100% and doesn't mess around and works hard and doesn't miss any games. Could it be that simple?

Can't be that simple, there's no room for excuses there as to why one kid couldn't/didn't make it.

So good day one below were the passed out rosters tonight for the Red and White teams ranked by scoring. I also highlighted the MN JR Whitecaps not on the All Star Teams - the answer is actually 4 and one of them is from Roseville. But looking over all this you never know if some of these kids opted out to do school visits or other things.

Good Action in the last 24 hours. The MN Red team really outplayed a tired short benched Little Casesars team 6-0. The MN White team was badly outshot and spent much of the night penalty killing in the game against the Chicago Mission both Press and McKeever were spectacular in goal - they never gave up and almost found a way to win forcing a tie in regulation and losing in a shoot out 2 golas to 0 goals to lose 2-1.

I understand that Little Caesars are without 5 skaters including Madison Packer (2 year USA U18 Team and future Badger), Meagan Mangene (3 year USA U18 Team and future BC Eagle) and starting goaltender Lisa Marshall. Chicago Mission is without Kendall Coyne (2 year USA U18 Team and undecided).

joehockey wrote:So good day one below were the passed out rosters tonight for the Red and White teams ranked by scoring.

FYI - The statistics for Shattuck are incorrect. Spoke to Eric Johnson about this yesterday and he shared that the Girls Elite League did not want to track statistics for Shattuck - only the other teams. Eric stated that the reason there are statistics for Shattuck is because Pointstreak requires them to be entered. I offered that if statistics are entered and displayed via the Elite League website they should be correct.

Note: The boys Elite League DOES capture correct stats for ALL teams including Shattuck.

This double standard is deeply concerning... and does a HUGE disservice to girls hockey, especially to the talented MN teams.

The corrected statistics have been provided to the Elite League - hopefully they will be updated soon and trust if the Bauer Tournament stats are captured someplace online they too are correct for ALL teams participating.

MN White also played last night without Barnes, Gleason and Colin all D1 caliber/commited players. Does that equal a Coyne? I think so. :) Will be without Crowe, Kuehl, Barnes, Gleason and maybe Colin for this mornings game.

Minnesota Girls Win Championship!

Interesting hockey the MN girls played well. If the Elite League had balanced the MN Red Team with the MN White it would have been an All Minnesota final. Hopefully this can grow and more of the top US & CDN teams can play in the future fall events. I will make some suggested improvements and post and hope others do to - this is good and it can be great.

First despite the chatter on this thread I highly recommend this League it is the best competition and hockey my daughter has had a chance to play - it is the best concentration of hockey players who love the game and want to play at the next level.

If I were in charge of the League I would think about the following after year two......As a two year parent of a player who has seen the League and know most of the parents let me share some personal thoughts and things others have said about what they love and what some suggest as improvements. I have no axe to grind – I offer this for the girls who will play in the future and hopefully have a chance to reach their goals and have a lot of fun.

Great Advancements: These were very constructive advancements in year two:

1 - St Cloud Weekend was a great way to start the League.
2 - The chance to play Belle Tire, Balmoral Hall, Thunder Bay, Little Caesars, Shattuck, Mission was a great highlight this helped kids and College Coaches get an idea how good MN girls really are..
3 - The idea of Two All Star Teams was a great evolution.
4 - The coaching seemed to be better and more engaged – my daughter spent two years with the East Metro and learned a ton from Allie Sanchez and Winny Brodt.
5 - 6 Great weekends of hockey for $290 or that is what I think it cost for League and All Star Game ($250 + $40) for 16 great games and 6 practices.

Areas for Improvement: I don’t know the perceptions the League wants -I think collectively the leaders are trying to achieve great things - with the greater hockey community the League can't become one person. I don't think that is the goal – leaders of this League have had to make tough decisions, great leaders communicates and share why things are done the way they are done and great Leaders seldom do things openly to further personal gain in the face of the great community good. We have great respect for what all are doing and hope only for the best. Many people are involved in the League find ways to use everyone to set course and seek input.

1 - Playing the Crunch was a good thing for them – but they need to improve to continue and their coach and fans might need a heads up on sporstmanship.
2- Player Criteria to play in the League – this still seems to be the biggest question I hear on the League – I suppose with only 60 spots there will always be disappointed people. Also if you have kids who don’t want to play excuse them and bring in kids who do – attitudes and effort was very different player to player - everyone wants this to be great hockey keep the bar and expectations high.
3- Criteria to Play in the All Star Game – League probably needs to establish criteria (last year the 6th goalie was taken over 3 others and the highest scoring D was not). If attendance, effort, results and stats count say so up front and then stick to it. This year a D who was a solid D was picked to play forward over other very strong forwards.
4 - Reason for such unbalanced MN Red and MN White All Star Teams – for the Red parents this was great maybe they won most every game big, but for most of the White they were stunned especially as the Tournament went forward - hey I was glad my daughter got to play and Winny and Allie did a terrific job with the White Team. The teams weren’t balanced by design but players and parents were told they were? Reviewing the Stats it was clear the top scorers were on Red - players and parents knew – these are smartest hockey players in MN and the most experienced hockey parents just be honest – don’t end the season with misinformation. If winning was so important for MN Hockey state it there will be an A team made up of some criteria and a B team made up of a different set – the future of this League should have that and hopefully it will.
5 - Continue to find top outside competition I think the players loved this.
6 - Find ways to get the top 60 players in MN in the League – Warroad, Roseau, GRG…have some tremendous players – not sure of the solution.
6 - Development – watching in St. Cloud and this weekend we saw some teams with higher understanding of trapping, breakouts, power plays – are there ways to teach this from this League? Opportunity to help prepare the group for D1
6 - College Recruiting & Knowledge – Compared to NAHA or Chowder Cup Minnesota girls still lack the scouting that the Eastern Tournaments draw. Also talking with parents there is still a lot of misinformation on understanding recruiting process – this League offers a good forum to help families understand.
7 - Communications – strong organizations are built on communications I highly recommend what ever course you choose you communicate it consistently, often and honestly.
8 - PR – find ways to get young girls (target U12 & U14) out to the games – you want kids to learn have fun and have role models – you also want to motivate them to one day be in the League.

Again I will forever be proud that my daughter had a chance to play in this League she played against and met many great friends and we met many new parents who are now friends.

Good luck in the future evolution of the Elite League. To Eric Johnson, John Russo, Winny Brodt, Chris Peterson and all the coaches thanks for all you do to help make hockey better for girls across MN!

Elite League

Many good points Joe. My oldest son played in the Elite League a few years back and made one of the All Star teams (the white). The red team was setup to win the tournament and the 2 teams faced each other in the title game. The white won! The difference is that there is more top end talent on the boys side, so even the white team has some good talent.
I also would like to thank the organizers of the league. It's a great oppurtunity for the girls and I am sure my daughter would do it again. My suggestions would be to tighten up the attendance rule and have three even teams. No outstate, no west, no east. I really don't have a problem loading up one team to win the tournament as long as the other team has girls that will attend the games. There has to be commitment.

Not sure what the age breakdown of the Red and White teams were but maybe if you had Red be all Seniors and White be everyone else it would get rid of the A/B argument. In addition might make for a good head to head tilt with class of 2011 vs 2012/2013 next year.

Anyway, nice to see such a good showing for Minnesota, I think it would be great if this tourney became as noteworthy as the National Championships.

As a parent of a western Wisconsin skater who has had the great pleasure of playing with Minnesota skaters in off-season leagues such as TNFHL, Showcase AAA, Velocity and in various tournaments, it is great to see how appreciative so many of you are of the Elite League and similar programs.

There are very limited pre and post-season opportunities for skaters in Wisconsin with this calibre of play and coaching...and my daughter would LOVE to have the chance to play in programs such as the Elite League. It sounds like it was a valuable program both for improving the skills of the skaters and in promoting Minnesota female High School age players in general.
