preseason favorites are obviously century and faribault
albert lea is always competitive
west could be a top 5 contender
east/loyola does have talent
austin will be the same as last year (dooley is still there right?)
mayo's underclassmen will have a lot to prove
winona always seems to put out a pretty good team
owatonna could also be a top 5 contender
i expect john marshall to be much better than last year.

That is precisely the point. Mayo had a ton of talent last year, did not lose any players, that I know of, to the devils playgroound, injury, car accident or academics and they still could not get it done. Who says "all Swedish and no Finnish" it fits in Mayo's case.goldy313 wrote:Much like Roy Nystrom does Lorne Grosso will field a competitive team no matter the year. I doubt Mayo will win the conference, they were 3rd last year with a bunch of talent, but I suspect they'll be in the 3 -6 range by the end of the year. Both Faribault and Century have some high end talent returning but at both schools depth should be an issue. Owatonna, West, Albert Lea, and Winona all suffered pretty heavily from graduation but that seems to be the case every year, there will be kids that step up. JM and East were both very young and should be improved. I just hope Austin can turn their program around sooner rather than later.
Charlie Thauwald left, that was a pretty big loss.
Of all that talent at Mayo last year where are they now? I mean they had some decent players but is anyone playing beyond the MnJHL? Mayo had a senior dominated team but really only had one line and the rest was smoke and mirrors. It's not like Mayo had a bunch or even 1 D1 caliber kid on that team. Never once did they appear in the top 10 or even top 20 in the state and lost to some pretty mediocre teams along the way. I think you overestimate what Mayo had last year while underestimating what Century and Albert Lea had, the difference was nil.

hockeyplaya101 you are right. Sederquest lives in Rochester in the Mayo District and Mcmasters is not eligible until the later part of January. Sederquest should be in the top 2 lines for the spartans this year. I heard he had knee surgery from an injury sustained in football but should not miss much of the season . As far as Mcmasters it all depends on what the coaching staff does with him when he is able to make the jump to varsity. It is going to be very late in the season when he returns so it should be interesting. If moved up he also will have a chance at 2 or 3rd line. All depends on how things are going at the time with the lines.

There are only two west players that were not there due to football that would have made a difference the main one being Weber. I know it was a scrimmage but after faribault and possibly Century ( they are not very deep after martini, kautz line) the rest of the big 9 is up for grabs. There is alot of parity amongst the rest. Who will come to play week in and week out will make the difference.

Mayo wont be good this year......No talent returning they dont have a goalie with really any varsity experance expect for 1 period against Austin....and i dont think one of there better players in Truex wont be back becasue i think hes playing with the Ice Hawks
As for Century theyll be the top to the middle of the pack
I dont think they have much returning except that one line that im blanking on the kids names at the moment......Also looking at there roster on MSHSL it shows Selnows gonna be on JV anyone know the details on that one?
JM looks to maybe be solid this year
Im liking Farbo to take Conference this year with the sleeper being Winona or Owatonna

You are thinking of Kautz, Martini and Anderson. That line should score most of the majority of their teams goals. I don't know who else they all have after that.As for Century theyll be the top to the middle of the pack

Big Nine
I drove up to Owatonna this past weekend and watched a few of the team scrimmages. Mankato East, Owatonna, Albert Lea, and Winona are very close. Austin will have a rough year again. Here is an informal assesment of what I saw.
Mankato East - Probably the most consistent team I saw. They looked like the best coached team out there.
Owatonna - Their top line is good and the second line is solid. Big drop off after that. Defense was OK, but gambled way too much. Goalie was solid.
Albert Lea - Looked very similar to past AL teams. Really scrappy (some say chippy). Goaltending will be their biggest concern
Winona - they had a handful of decent players. They look like a .500 team to me.
Austin - they are really big and slow. I believe they lost a close game to Owatonna's JV team during the scrimmages.
Overall I still think it will be Faribault and Century as the favorites. After that the teams are really close. Should be an entertaining Big 9 season.

SEMNHOCKEYFAN---- Truex played with the Ice Hawks up until the High School season started he is playing High School hockey. Mayo is not going to be a great team this year but will compete with most of the Big 9 teams. As I pointed out in an earlier post Faribault is the only team that is ahead of everybody else. The rest is going to be who shows up to play. I watched Abert Lea and West this past weekend and neither team showed any signs of being that good. Albert Lea is going to struggle to score as Mayo will. West was missing Weber to football but he alone isn't going to make them that much better. They struggled to score as well. Mayo beat West 1-0 and tied AL 0-0. As you can see not alot of offense. Winona, East and JM are also in the same mix as these teams. None of them are great teams and will compete with each other. Austin of course is now in a different league as they only play 3 big 9 teams twice.
