1965??? If we're returning to that era, then Eden Prairie would be a small farm school, Centennial wouldn't exist, and the Catholic schools wouldn't know what hockey is.

Seriously, on this pre-season top 20 ranking, I would take Orono and New Prague off, and add Delano (in the top 10) and Faribault.[/quote]

Actually, back in 1965, Duluth Cathedral (now Marshall) won the Independent School title, in overtime vs. Hill High School, and they had a great record, including wins over Duluth East and International Falls, both of which were real public school powers back then.

Actually, the Hill-Toppers beat the Broncos in 1967 (66-67 season), I believe the IFalls boys won 5 to 2 in 1965.
But the 67 win was big as it ended the Falls 3 year winning streak.
But I am pretty sure Greenway were the state champs in 1968(67-68 season).

Anyway I was at the 65 and 67 games. Cathedral had a good team - both years.
The Hoene brothers were unbelievable.

1965 - the top ten were all section 7.

:D
It was Region 7 then, and the runners up from Region 7 and Region 8 played to see who would make the tournament through the "back door"!

In 65 I believe it was automatic - oneyear it was 8 one year it was 7.
Sometime shortly after (I believe, not sure what year the switch was made) it switched to a play-off. And of course, with the increase in hockey in the metro and south and west parts of the state it was eliminated. And now, at the AA level you could end up with no northern teams at the tournament.

I like the rankings you have here with the exception of Sartell. The reason for this is that I saw Sartell play several times last year and although they were a good team last year and surely will be this year, they havent proven themselves as a top-10 team yet. Other than that I like the Mahtomedi and I-Falls placement.

Section 7

Post by OU812 »

I don't know much about the Section 7 teams this year, but Elliot knows a thing or two about high school hockey.

Looking forward to the start of the season tomorrow. Good luck to all the teams. See you in St. Paul in March...

Wow, first official game of the year for both teams:

#1 Breck vs #2 STA
12/08/09 7:30PM @ Breck School

I guess we will have little time to debate the rankings, at least #1 vs. #2

Section 4A making a strong case for toughest section in the state, with 4 schools in the top 20

gotta take Breck... i think STA isn't as deep as they would like to be, better hit the road for some recruits tommy, and average tender prone to a few easy ones will make this look more like #1 vs #12 not 2

lourdes lost funk, spratte, and voigt..they dont have anyone near that caliber returning and have weak goal tending.
They also lost Peterson, he was the best player Lourdes had last season.

Not sure who your referring to, but Orono lost too much talent to be considered a top 15 team, Alex had Hemmingway who is now gone (i didnt hear about anyone but him when Alex was brought up). Cathedral is a top 15 team no matter who they lose, GREAT coaching up there.

yeah that list was a lil premature and in respect to tg ur right they maynot be top 50 anymore. they have now lost 5 returning senior forwards that they cut and a junior forward who quit. They went from being a contender to a jv team.. they will have solid defnse but no offense at all against any quality team
