Virginia/MI-B @ Hermantown
This should be a good one. Big 7A seeding implications will result from this game. The loser will need some help if they want the #1 seed in February.

Let's see....how do I think this one is going to turn out?

According to the boys on 610 AM in Duluth, the Hawks are all over Virginia 5-0 in the 2nd period.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

I hate to tell you, but it was total domination by the Hawks tonight.
I think Virginia had like 10 or 12 shots when I left.
It really wasn't what I expected, but I will certainly take it.

Good for the Hawks. See what happens when Virginia finally plays somebody.

Re: wow
Hermantown has to be considered the front runner for now as far as seedings go. Lots of games left, but this is a big win for the Hawks!

Twinports,
Virginia has played and beaten Grand Rapids, and played a tight one with Denfeld (Yes, I know they got drubbed by CEC, but they did beat Hermantown), so I think your statement is slightly inaccurate. Virginia had an off game (as did Denfeld tonight), and Hermantown took advantage, as a good team does. I doubt that result would repeat itself in a rematch.

Re: wow
Game went as expected. It is tough to go into a place like Hermantown and win. The score was a little more lobsided than one would have thought but it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone Hermantown won this game. Virginia is a solid HS team and will bounce back.

front runner
i dont think you could necessarily call them the frontrunner with hibbing in there as of lately...

How do you figure the game went as expected.
Will Virginia have trouble on the road this year?
I notice the win against GR was at home and the close game against I Falls was away. I Falls actually led in that game ( for 30 seconds)

Re: slickslide
Here's why Hermantown is the front runner - for now:

There are basically 3 games that will determine the top 3 seeds, unless there is an upset within 7a play (which is not out of the question by any means).

1) Virginia @. Hermantown
2) Hermantown @ Hibbing
3) Virginia @ Hibbing

Hermantown has 1 of the 2 wins they would need. Hibbing still needs to win two big games, and Virginia will now need some help. This of course is all out the window if any of these three teams should lose a game to Two Harbors, Eveleth, I Falls, or Silver Bay.

Re: wow
Hey Puck,
I do apologize. I did forget their win over GR. I still believe Virginia does play the weakest schedule of the Big 3 in 7A. From reviewing the schedules Hibbing by far plays the best schedule and the Hawks would be above Virginia. Apparently Virginia is just Happy with lots of wins during the season but where does that ever get them??? Oh I am sorry I forgot they did make the State last year for the first time in History.

Re: wow
You'll get no argument from me concerning Virginia's schedule. Although I don't think Hermantown's is much stronger.

As a matter of fact, they have a lot of common opponents on their schedules: Eveleth, Denfeld, Greenway, East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, Crookston, Int'l Falls, Two Harbors, Hibbing, Silver Bay, Proctor, and Duluth Central.

Virginia's other games are/were against: Mound-Westonka, Grand Rapids, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Mayo, Litchfield, Wadena, Park, Apollo, Ely, and St. Paul Johnson.

Hermantown's other games: Princeton, Hopkins, Superior, Duluth Marshall, Cloquet, Red Wing, Sauk Rapids, and Lake of the Woods.

Looks to me that the only major difference between the two is that Hermantown in playing in the LSC, thus getting CEC and Marshall. Virginia only gets Grand Rapids from the IRC. Red Wing and maybe Sauk Rapids are the only other really tough ones for Hermantown, while Rochester John Marshall should prove to be a tough one for Virginia, and Mound-Westonka has a pretty good squad as well (their record doesn't show it, but they have all one-goal losses).

Niether one stacks up to Hibbing. Not even on the same block as the ballpark.

Puck,
You must be a Good Man!! I do agree with some of the common opponents. I would still give the Nod to the Hawks. LOW.Sauk Rapids, Cloquet, Marshall, those are good opponents. Puck, have a good holiday.

Virginia - Hermantown
Wow... a real spanking by Hermantown. Congrats to them. Unless something wild happens the Hermantown Hibbing game will be for the #1 seed in 7A. Playoffs should be great.

Will be interesting to see how Devils react after the loss. They play Eveleth in Eveleth on Friday night. Devils need to pick it up on the road! Not good in the Falls but got lucky with a win and Hermantown dominated them in their rink. Maybe it's the bus exaust? Nothing away from the Hawks, they played very well and earned the big win.

As far as schedules go. Hibbing in the winner. Let's not forget they played AA not long ago and have been successful in retaining those opponents. It isn't easy to just call up a Hastings or Moorhead and get a game. Virginia would like to strenghten their schedule and have tried and have had some success...RJM, Mayo, St. Cloud but still working to improve it more. If they have another good season it will help.

Again congrats to the Hawks
