Rematch of the 7AA Finals
PHM at CEC.
Any predictions for the game on Thursday? And which team seems to be better?

My Thoughts are PHM 4-2WarriorHockey00 wrote:PHM at CEC.

As long as this major snowstorm (Tuesday afternoon through early Thursday) prediction doesn't close the schools on Thursday it will be a good game.. the Jacks will probably still be without one of their 'D' starters if not both who were injured (one a shoulder that they said would be at least a week, the other a kneecap injury-could return against Hibbing tonight-Tuesday) last week.
PHM vs CEC
Truthfully, I think CEC would be happy to just keep this one close. CEC is a very young team defensively. With the injury to their most experienced defenseman (9th grader) they may really struggle (as they have previously shown) just trying to break the puck out of their own end. This could easily turn into a laugher.
While that *could* happen.. many people also believed that would happen in the section final last year also. I don't believe it will be more than a 2 goal game either way, and Jessie Ryan may be back playing D as she did for 2 periods in the loss to Minnetonka on Saturday.
The team would be much better with her at the point and thus having two defensemen who can skate with the puck when Shevich is back. They could have two good lines if they would reconfigure the first and second line (which will happen if Ryan plays D again), while still having a third line that can give the other two a breather if needed.

You really cannot compare this year's team, at this point of the year, to last year's section final team. You had 2 senior defenseman and a very good sophomore defensman who now plays center. This year's team currently has NO EXPERIENCE AT DEFENSE. They are incapable of beaking out the puck against a good team. PHM will pinch their d on CEC forwards and keep the puck in the zone all night. The only hope will be a 60 save performance by CEC's goalie.

Prediction
Right on when you say that you can't compare this years team to last years. That goes for most of the teams in the section. What everyone needs to look at is who both of these teams have played thus far. It won't help on the ice, but may lead to some clues about readiness,

I think that is reasonable. If I had to rank everyone in 7AA I would put Gr Rapids in the #3 spot and Elk River in the #2 spot and slide everyone else down.redlightclub wrote:PHM 11 Hibbing/Chisholm 1
Minnetonka 3 PHM 2
PHM 5 Forest Lake 1
CEC 4 Hibbing/Chisholm 1
Minnetonka 5 CEC 0
CEC 5 Forest Lake 0
I would rank the 3 Duluth area teams at this point of the season
1 PHM
2 CEC
3 Duluth
Really, I am not into ranking teams at this point in time. Coaches use the whole season to gain players experience by putting them into situations where they can learn how to react and make plays.

Well....
Lumberjacks 4 Mirage 1.. Courtney Esse hat-trick and Sarah Gustafson stopped nearly 50 (46 on the scoreboard anyway) shots in the win. CEC only had 11 shots but scored their 4 goals on those shots. She stopped so many point blank shots that her and Julia Gilbert were cracking up afterwards while shaking hands with the referees.
The refs seemed to try and take over the game the 2nd and 3rd period.. the 2nd saw a ton of PHM penalties, mostly for contact calls, and the 3rd period both teams spent time in the box with PHM getting a few powerplays. I guess the cliche of 'marbles' in each pocket really is true?
It's rare when a hat-trick doesn't earn a "1st star" award but Sarah Gustafson's performance was too good to be anything but the player of the game.
If you were lucky enough to see the UMD/New Hampshire women's frozen four semi-final game in 2008, her performance rivals the type of performance Kim Martin put up, though comparing Sarah Gustafson's performance to the big game atmosphere of that college game and the frozen 4 is probably too off the wall for reality

Some GAME Photos.. I didn't get enough of CEC goaltender Sarah Gustafson that were really usable because of traffic in front of the net.

DHMN Nice Pics may I ask what kind of camera you have and what type of lens?DHMN wrote:Some GAME Photos.. I didn't get enough of CEC goaltender Sarah Gustafson that were really usable because of traffic in front of the net.

SOG are a little misleading. They overstated the shots on goal by about 10%, so they really only had about 40 shots on goal. Of those only about 35 or so were good shots on goal and of those only about 30 were from within 5 feet of the goaltender. So all in all CEC played the game the way they had been coached and came away the victors.DHMN wrote:Well....

It's a Canon EOS 50D camera with the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 lens.. I went the Sigma route to save $500 over the Canon version of the same lens.gmom29 wrote:DHMN Nice Pics may I ask what kind of camera you have and what type of lens?DHMN wrote:Some GAME Photos.. It's hard for me to know how accurate the shot clock was while looking through a camera lens, so I would just glance up at it once in a while and go with what Mike was counting.wild77 wrote:

Sorry, it was a poor attempt at sarcasm. The Lumberjacks were badly outplayed and should not be happy with that win....except for the goalie.DHMN wrote:It's hard for me to know how accurate the shot clock was while looking through a camera lens, so I would just glance up at it once in a while and go with what Mike was counting.wild77 wrote:

This is the same type of statement I heard over and over after the Section Final last year.. yet CEC wins again. They weren't 'out-played' so much as they played the game they're coached to play and you can't say they were outcoached when they won ... That's how he coaches and it sometimes works against teams the stronger teams up here.. but rarely works against the more powerful teams from the south.wild77 wrote:Sorry, it was a poor attempt at sarcasm. Ummm, they were outplayed BY ALOT! I am not saying that CEC did not have any success against PHM. Obviously they did as they scored 4 goals, but that game was won because the CEC goalie outplayed everyone. There was no secret plan developed by the CEC coaching staff that allowed them to take advantage of PHM's aggressive play. You give them too much credit!DHMN wrote:This is the same type of statement I heard over and over after the Section Final last year.. yet CEC wins again. You honestly don't think a coach can have a game plan and have it executed when knowing how the other opponent is going to play or how they play?
fear "the bike"
Some can, yes...........nhl_combine wrote:wild77 wrote:Ummm, they were outplayed BY ALOT! I am not saying that CEC did not have any success against PHM.
