Extinct Programs
With the talk of many programs struggling to stay alive and being able to compete, what are some previous programs that have gone extinct and use to be competitive? Provide some details if you can.
I know Aurora-Hoyt Lakes up on the range use to be pretty solid back when mining was big. I can't find printed stats, but I do believe they were one of the best teams in the state one year (late 70s I believe). Anyone got anything on this?

Two that come to mind off hand are Harding (St Paul)and Edison (Mpls).
If you go to the Harding Arena (make sure you lock your car) you'll see a few dusty trophies from a bygone era on a shelf in the corner and maybe a few photos of past Peewee and Bantam teams. Kind of sad.
Mpls Edison was a program on the ropes when my boy was a mite and I remember we did a fundraiser to help them stay afloat and then someone embezzled teh money and they went broke and defunct anyway.

Aurora - Hoyt Lakes (Blackhawks) had some very competitive teams mid 70's to mid 80's (often ranked in top 20, occasionally top 10). Changed to Mesbai East (Giants) with the consolidation of area schools, and then the hockey program disappeared.
Other small mining towns have had similar fate. Babbitt (Knights), home of multi-olympian Buzzy Schnieder; Chisholm (Bluestreaks); Mt. Iron (Red Raiders).

Fun, though somewhat sad, topic.
I don't know if they were ever any good, but I've always marveled that Indus could muster up a high school hockey program. Just look at it on a map (zoom in and use the aerial satellite view): http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Indus&state=MN

I wrote down all of the extinct hockey programs that I could think of (either by school closure or co-op). Most of the ones I could think of were in the metro area.
Of the current North Metro Co-op, Park Center and Fridley used to be pretty good from time to time. Edina West put in some good years. Williams was in the state tournament in the 40's, but that town is tiny so they don't have a high school anymore.
I wrote down many more teams than this, though. St. Paul and Minneapolis had a lot of schools that closed up. Roseville and Hopkins used to be two schools, not to mention there were actual Robbinsdale and Golden Valley HS's.
Didn't Duluth have a fourth high school years ago? Were they any good?

The extinct high school from Duluth is Morgan Park, nicknamed the Wildcats (if memory serves). They made their section quarterfinals a number of times, but never advanced past that round, according to my records.brandy38 wrote:I wrote down all of the extinct hockey programs that I could think of (either by school closure or co-op). I remember Minneapolis Southwest winning the state title in overtime against Edina in 1970. I also remember watching Indus several times. They actually were quite competitive in the early or mid 60's. I saw their rink and school once. The school was about the same size as the outdoor rink that was right next to the school.
Did a lot of schools drop their hockey program, or are many of the schools now gone?

Bloomington Lincoln made it to the state tournament one year.
It is sad to see that Mpls is down to 2 teams now...had some many good ones. Believe it or not Patrick Henry made the state tournament a few times in the 1960's. If I remember correctly, they got 3rd place one year.
There are also several defunct and/or closed St. Paul programs as well. At least Johnson has been able to maintain their program..are they a co-op team now?
The iron range has been well convered, but just think if someday Greenway were to not have a team? Hard to believe they were going to the dance earlier this decade and doing very well.
The other area is the NW suburbs...Park Center and Fridley were mentioned, but don't forget about Columbia Heights - Reggie Miracle!!!
It was Hopkins Lindbergh..but what was the other school called?
What were the two Roseville teams called again? Drawing a big blank.

Johnson is not a coop. They are Class A this year though. I didn't mention Columbia Heights because even though they went to the state tournament, I don't think they had another season even comparable to that one. Hopkins Eisenhower was the other school. Kellogg and Ramsey were the two Roseville teams even though Kellogg was located in Little Canada.SEMinnHockeyNut wrote:Bloomington Lincoln made it to the state tournament one year.

Thanks Brandy...I must be getting old!
No, Columbia Heights did not have a great history, but that was a nice run for them that one year, so I had to mention them.
Maybe FSN should do a show of 'one hit' wonders? Columbia Heights would be in there, as well as East Grand Forks one tournament in 1984?
Sorry off topic, but the one class Cinderella stories are the best.

That is correct, the two schools merged to form Roseville Area High School in 1986. Ramsey's glory years were in the 60's and early 70's. Their highest finish in the State Tournament was runner-up in 1973:Getemupscout wrote:Roseville old two schools

Kellogg??

Minnhock maintains a great state tournament history on their website. All games and scores. Fun to look at and reminisce.

I remember watching East Grand Forks at state in 1971 (came in via back door) and again in 1980. Their program is still going.

Re: One more
Sad for hockey the new residents of places like Coon Rapids, CH, Edison ect....cannot afford to have their kids play hockey. Maybe it's time to start outdoor rec leagues again. Maybe if our Mn winters get colder and longer again??F14 wrote:Columbia Heights 1983 State Tournament
Defeated Edina 2-0 with Reggie Miracle.
By 2000, 0-24, Merged with Fridley, BC to form Tri-CIty which is now North Metro.
No one from CH probably even plays hockey anymore.
Kellogg went to the tourney in 1974. I think Steve Ulseth was on that team.MNHockeyFan wrote:That is correct, the two schools merged to form Roseville Area High School in 1986. Two other players to go along with Ulseth from the Kellogg 1975 team, I can only remember their last names; Forletti (sp?) and Sauer. East had a major battle getting past them in the Section 2 semifinals. Kellogg had a very good team that year.BodyShots wrote:Kellogg went to the tourney in 1974. I wonder if there are any Kellogg or Ramsey jerseys hanging in XCEL. There are other defunct team jerseys hanging in there (columbia heights, brooklyn center, a tattered St. Paul Monroe sweater), but I've never seen a Kellogg or Ramsey one before. It would be cool if a company would make jerseys of these bygone teams on special order. I would feel tempted to buy a couple just for the sake of history.

I played on the EGF 1971 Team. First time we ever made it.
The GREEN WAVE also made it in 1980 and 1982 in the single class system.
And in the two class system, they made it in class A several times = 1998 consolation trophy, 1999 Runner up, losing to BSM in a very close game, 2001 consolation trophy, and 2002 consolation trophy.

teams
How about Williams??? They were a state tournement team, I met a star from there one time in Wisconsin...that's another story...
I think the Indus banner still hangs in the EGF arena, was not too many years ago...as well as in the Huck at TRF. (question to TRF people: what is the significance of the different team jersys in the TRF Ralph????..ditto the team banners in EGF???)
Staples made the first state tournement......evidentlty they had some interest in hockey at some point. And actually recently they were part of a co-op with Wadena.
Hallock is always an interesting one to me, how the heck do they still have hockey??????? They are currently under the Kittson County Central school, think of it, A NINE MAN FOOTBALL TEAM..... try and think of another school who competes in nine man football and also has a hockey team.
