#15 White Bear Lake at #11 DE @ Superior Ice Arena 12/11/09
Matchup of two top 15 teams. Don't know much about White Bear Lake but East will be missing their top 3 defensemen.
Just because im a homer, I've got East 3-1.

With East missing so many defensemen and a lot of WBL people questioning their defense, there could be some scoring in this one.
East has more depth at forward, so if they can keep the score down and wear down WBL, I like their chances. Not sure I like the odds in a higher-scoring game.
Very important game for both teams. ER made a statement tonight by beating up on Anoka (a team East took some time in putting away earlier this week), so East needs to keep pace. And with the SEC suddenly looking wide open, WBL has a chance to really establish themselves.

Why are they missing? Hurt, Discipline, or Dogpound dance?EHSHack wrote:Matchup of two top 15 teams. Don't know much about White Bear Lake but East will be missing their top 3 defensemen.

I suppose it will have to wait.
If anyone can update frequently that would be great!
East win 4 to 1 with an empty netter.
I heard it was a close and very physical game. East scored on their first shot. Tied after 2. White Bear spent too much time in the penalty box in the third and East capitalized with 2 goals. Then the empty netter. Again, I wasn't there, but this is the report I got.

Further information is appreciated from those who were attendance, once they've escaped back from Superior.
Good luck to WBL next Tuesday.
Thanks for the well wishes Karl. But, WBL can't look past Cloquet tomorrow.karl(east) wrote:MedleyWR wrote:East win 4 to 1 with an empty netter.

Ah, yes. I'll wish you luck on that one too. You probably won't need it, though.MedleyWR wrote:Thanks for the well wishes Karl. But, WBL can't look past Cloquet tomorrow.karl(east) wrote:MedleyWR wrote:East win 4 to 1 with an empty netter.

1st shot Goal (Schletty)
1st shot Goal (Jordan)
Hastings-
2nd shot Goal
DE-
1st shot Goal.
This is proving to be a problem, who was in net tonight?

SOG totals seem a bit low, but this isn't shocking for a SAHA game.

I guess from my point of view it wasn't a very close game. Lutzka finally had the breakout game I predicted 2 games ago and buried 3 times for the 'trick. East was very methodical when playing the puck and just wore WBL out from all the passes. It seemed whenever WBL had an odd man rush they would just throw it at the net and hope for a rebound, but Jeanetta gobbled most of those up. I was very impressed with Randolph, Olson's, and Brazerol really stepping up while these D-men are out. Wolters from WBL didn't really show much out there. He has a nice shot but I guess didn't do much tonite. Before WBL fans go crying about penalties doing them in don't forget Johnson got 10 min for checking from behind which lasted most of the 3rd period, so if WBL can't score with 4 of DE's defensemen not playing, there's more trouble than penalties. I felt East really stepped up tonite with sophomores Randolph, Holappa, Olson,Cotter and Repensky really stepping up and making an impact. Kuening also held his own out there.
Overall WBL should matchup well with Cloquet at this point in the season. Just really wasn't impressed with them.

I wouldn't say the game was that physical, it was, for the most part, sloppy puck control by both teams. The JV game was extremely physical in the third.
It appears the larger sheet of ice was not something WBL was able to handle, despite the supposed speed. East used board to board passing, many two-line passes and moved the puck better, although still not too crisp, than WBL. The art of catching a pass seems to be lost!!
East created many potential odd-man rushes that, thanks to some decent WBL backchecking, or uncontrolled passes, help thwart more disaster.
Neither team had many scoring chances that resulted in saves. Both goalies probably had two, maybe three good saves, and the rest routine. HOWEVER, EHSHack might confirm that East had at least three missed open nets where either the shooter couldn't pull the trigger, or missed the net. It could have easily been 5-1 without the need of an open net. In fact, I just reviewed the scoring summary, and it shows that 18 Shots on goal for East. One save was by a WBL defenseman on the empty net, meaning Schletty had 13 Saves on 16 shots.... And WBL mustered only 15 shots. KARL..... I agree that had to be awfully close to the real shots.
ESHHack was right when the line of Wolter, Birkinbine and Wahlin didn't get very close to the net. The goal was scored by WBL's third line. The best part for WBL was the penalty kill, which did a great job of forcing the puck to stay on top, blocked shots and limited East's PP. Eat's PP did move the puck well, but just didn't shoot.
I would also agree that the score was closer than the game. And NO... the game was not unfairly officiated. WBL had 6 PPs to East's 4. In fact, I thought more could have been called on WBL... . Many times the ol' clutch and grab in the neutral zone by WBL was in play. Again, factor that WBL had 6 PPs and ONLY GOT 15 SHOTS FOR THE GAME???
After watching Hill pound Benilde and Jacob Meyer with 38 SOG, if WBL doesn't figure it out, the Hill game will be ugly.
Yes, they still have to take care of Cloquet.

His breakaway goal was a thing of beauty, eh? Broke down the center of the ice (LH shooter) pushed puck wide to his forehand, drew Schletty that way, then quick pulled it to his backhand and was behind Schletty a stride before the easy backhand into the open net.EHSHack wrote:I guess from my point of view it wasn't a very close game. It was sloppy play by DE, especially in the first period. Could tell coach was not happy in that he was playing the fourth line in the first period, plus the D when tied in the first period. Conversely those kids didn't see the ice in the MG game. DE's got to step it up and get consistent and start shooting the puck, especially in weaker games such as this one. Sure there were moments of great play, but not many. Thankfully WBL couldn't handle the puck very well or it could have been a different story. Same goes for the JV who gave up a lead late and ended up with a tie, again with hardly any shots - let's get it going boys.

I think that is the key. There was one instance, an East player got the puck clean on his stick between the bottom of the circle and red goal line, about 15 feet from the net. Schletty was facing center ice and had left the whole side of the net open where a quick release would have either deflected off the side of his pads, body or could have been in the back of the net. Instead, he held the puck too long and waited for Schletty to grab the post, then snapped a harmless shot.dlhhockey wrote:It was sloppy play by DE, especially in the first period. It appeared East wanted the "perfect" pass rather than take chances on rebounds. When a team scores 19 seconds into the game like East did, they have to capitalize and just pound the net. They let my Bears stay in the game on the scoreboard.
