Big 9

dallasstars10. You must not have read anything on the owatonna/century game. Owatonna actually outshot Century 20-17 and still lost 7-0. I don't know if it was simply goalie problems or what but this is one of those weird games. You are right about Mayo they need to rebound against East on Thursday in a big way or things could get bad. Mayo's shedule after the break is very difficult having to play Hibbing, Virginia, Century, Winona, St. Paul Johnson right away. They need to win a few before the break. Looks like the talk of Austin being better is off the newswire after being beat 11-4 by East. Nothing against East but they are not that strong of a team. Austin is probably no better than last year. If East did this to them I doubt Austin will win a Big 9 game this year as well.
I didn't see the Century Owatonna game but the Big Nine page has shots 20-17 in favor of Owatonna. 7 goals, 10 saves? I don't know, maybe the quality was very good, but that's a save percentage of 59%.
I also see Tartan beat Faribault 3-1, shots were 30-27 in favor of Tatan. By comparison Tartan outshot Century 43-17 in Tartan's 3-2 OT win. The Century @ Faribault game looks to be a very good one.
I did see the JM/Johnson game, JM is really struggling which suprises me, I thought they'd improve given how young they were last year but at least early in the season they seem to have regressed.

Austin
As far as Austin being improved this year . . . they are, especially when you look at last years results. Last year the Packers players posted only 16 points in conference play all season. They had nine total goals and assists last night alone, and those were against a good East team. Overall Austin was 0-19 last year, and has two wins already this season, so it seems pretty hard to argue that they have not improved.

East hasn't been able to win a game against a team they shouldn't beat on paper. Tomorrow will be possibly their chance to show they can finally win a game against a solid big 9 team.

OU812. Do you even know who they played to get those wins???? The wins were against Luverne and Fairmont who are rated in the bottom 5 teams in Minnesota so don't tell me they have improved. East is a middle of the road big 9 team who put 11 goals on them, you have to be kidding me. Imagine what Century, Faribault , Winona, etc... will do to them. It won't even be competitive. Austin's last big 9 win was almost two years ago and it came against East in OT. It would be no different in saying East is a high caliber team if they played those games against Luverne and Fairmont. East would put up 20 goals on them. It was actually close games when Austin played them. Austin will not win a Big 9 game this year. Also East put up 62 shots on Austin. The teams mentioned above will put up 80 to 90 like they have been the last few years . Nothing has changed in Austin and it won't for awhile. They will get a few more wins as they have sleepy eye twice, Lesuere/henderson twice and I thought Waseca but now looking at there scores that will be a game. After what East did to them you tell me what big 9 win they will have.
Is Austin improved?
Okay Itech22, here's how I see it (now this is why we have the forum):
Austin in entire 2008-2009 season:
0 wins
24 goals
Austin in 1st 5 games of 2009-2010 season:
2 wins
18 goals
Actually, I don't know if Austin will win a Big 9 game (although they were up 2-0 on East last night, btw). I do think the Packers are better than last year. So is East, and so is Winona. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Yes Austin has improved number wise from last year, but as stated earlier did Austin not play a few "warm-up" games ? I mean they have 2 wins against some well below average teams and they have so many goals because I'm sure the tender's on those teams weren't to hot.
I don't mean to demean Austin as a city or a team, but they just don't have the talent, numbers, or really work ethic to produce a hockey team that will do something.
I don't feel they will get a big 9 conference win at all this year and saying that they will finish the season with more than 6 wins is pushing it (even though they have 4 more "easy" games)

Wasn't Austin missing there whole 2nd line against East? I would think that might make a difference.itech22 wrote:OU812. Do you even know who they played to get those wins???? It may even be there 1st line. After looking at Hockey hub stats it's there highest scoring line. The Pitboss wrote:Wasn't Austin missing there whole 2nd line against East? dallasstars10 you are right? From the drop of the puck East had no chance due to the energy of Mayo the forecheck was outstanding. Mayo is a very confusing team and needs to realize that hustle alone is going to make them successfull at times such as this. Mayo so far is usually really good out there or really bad. If they can find some consistency they will be a scary team to play for possible upsets in the future.. But until then we will see.
scarlethockey to answer a little bit of your question on who is scoring for Mayo. 12 players last night had a point for Mayo which is very impressive. But the play maker they have is Spencer Lee (junior) who leads the team in scoring . This kid has wheels upon wheels which creates things. I see Austin allowed 81 shots playing Century (ouch) and only had 11. I imagine frutiger shut it down after the 2nd . Owatonna seems to have it's struggles at times as well looking at last night's score. Winona is going to be a team that Faribault and Century have to take seriously or else. JM getting a win over West. West must be really down this year.
