Irondale girls playing just like it's scripted
DAVID La VAQUE, Star Tribune
Irondale girls' hockey coach Tom Rodefeld hears his players talking in the locker room then looks around for a camera crew.
"They say thing like, 'Win or lose, it's all about what we do on the ice,'" he said. "As a coach, it's like they are reading from a script of exactly what you want 17-year-olds to say."
The older, more confident Knights started this season 6-0 on the strength of two comeback victories.
Down 4-2 after two periods to defending Class 1A champion Breck, the Knights rallied to score four consecutive goals in a 6-5 victory.
Irondale twice came back to tie Coon Rapids in the third period before winning 5-4 in overtime.
Rodefeld credited standouts Meghan Lorence and Gina McDonald, ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in all-time scoring in school history, respectively, for "pushing the team to play better than maybe they thought they could."
But the entire team is mentally tougher after qualifying for the Class 2A state tournament last season.
"The little things that used to get us down don't anymore," he said.
Elks' experiment working
Katie Erickson, a defender who helped Elk River to the state tournament last season, is now playing forward.
"It does show on the defensive end a little bit," coach Joe Heasley said. "I'm sure some people are thinking, 'What the heck is he doing?' She is a great defender, but she's good in the offensive zone as well. She's probably our second-most skilled player."
The first is sophomore Jonna Curtis, who scored 10 of the team's 22 goals in the first four games this season, all victories.
Erickson provides Curtis some support while still getting a chance to unleash her booming slapshot from the point on power plays.
Heasley said Erickson's four goals all came courtesy of slapshots.
"We'll see how long this experiment works," he said.

No. 2 Stillwater gets back on track, beats top-ranked Roseville
Jim Gehrz, Star Tribune
Stillwater goalie Marah Sobczak made a dramatic third-period save against Roseville on Thursday night. Stillwater won the game 5-3.
The Ponies were coming off a tough loss to Hastings, but they bounced back with a strong effort.

Defending Class 2A state champion Stillwater entered Thursday's hockey game against No. 1-ranked Roseville thinking more about redemption than a rivalry.
Two nights earlier, the No. 2-ranked Ponies "got it handed to us" in a 2-0 loss against Hastings, coach Tony Scheid said.
"We did a lot of soul searching after that game," he said. "We felt that tonight, our effort and our attitude had to be there."
Five different Ponies scored goals in Thursday's 5-3 victory at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center. Kristina King's goal at 2:54 of the first period will go in the books as an unassisted tally, but unrelenting pressure from the team made it possible. The Ponies scored two more goals and led 3-1 at the first intermission.
"We were actually lucky to come out of the first period down 3-1," Roseville coach Vic Brodt said. "It could have been worse."
The Raiders played the aggressors in the second period, outshooting Stillwater 15-4 and getting goals from Chelsea Witwicke and Bethany Brausen.
A power-play goal from the Ponies' Caitlin Hewes in the period held up as the game-winner.
Roseville put 44 shots on goal Thursday, but Ponies goaltender Marah Sobczak kept her team in the game. She held the Raiders scoreless in the third period. Her teammate Lisa Tuuri scored an empty-net goal with 24 seconds remaining.
"Sobczak came up big," Scheid said. "It's good in a big game to have a veteran goalie."
The Suburban East Conference rivals will meet at least once more this season. A pivotal showdown in Section 4 also could be waiting. Roseville swept the season series last year only to see the Ponies win the section championship and later, their second state title in three seasons.
"A lot of our kids got good experience with what the Stillwater game is," Brodt said.

I saw in this morning's Star Tribune she was named, along with Corinne Buie of Edina, one of the Athletes of the Week:ghshockeyfan wrote:Senior goalie Kaitlyn Rolando made 95 stops in the two games.
