AA Rankings by Tier Level

Post by CB00 »

Rather than ranking teams 1-?. I've ranked teams by tiers. As we see each night, upset after upset based on number rankings.

The teams in each tier are alphabetical, so we don't try to order them by numbers rather then tiers.

Tier I Front Runner
Minnetonka

Tier 2 Next in Line
Blaine
Eden Prairie
Edina

Tier 3 Just Missing
H-M
Jefferson
Roseau
Wayzata

Tier 4 Any Given Night
AHA
Andover
BSM
Centennial
CDH
Duluth East
Eagan
Elk River
Maple Grove
Moorhead
Osseo
Rochester Century
Tartan
WBL
Woodbury

Tier 5 Outside Looking In?
Apple Valley
Burnsviile
Flake?
Grand Rapids
St.Cloud Tech
Stillwater
Winona

I'd probably drop FLake after tonights loss to East Ridge.

Add Park-Cottage Grove.

EDIT: I just notice Cottage Grove took a whooping from Bemedji 7-1!
Always celly hard.

Great idea. Here is some food for thought

After this week. neither HM nor Wayzata should be ranked higher than BSM or Centennial, but they should not be in a lower tier either.

Centennial beat up BSM and beat Jefferson (shootout). They deserve to be up in tier 3.

BSM beat Wayzata and then dominated Maple Grove (5-1) more than Jefferson (3-1 w/en). Also has a tie with HM. They probably belong in tier 3.

I would also put East in Tier 3. Maybe CDH too.

With two close losses to Edina, I think Blaine defines "just missing".

Looks about right to me. I'd throw Hill in the top group and slide a couple of the group 4 teams into group 5, but this sums things up pretty well...a small group at the top, another small group right behind them, and then a whole heap of teams that are incredibly difficult to sort out.

Edina

Post by F14 »

If Edina is in Tier Two and they are 3-0 against Blaine (two one goal wins) and beat Eden Prairie, they should be #2 in the state irregardless of how they do against Mtka. I saw them play early vs Wayzata and twice since then, and they are a TEAM. Unselfish. Giles has done a great job with this group.

I was never a big fan of "style points" since a win is a win, but your logic needs to go both ways. Wayzata dominated BSM in the game and drastically outshot them, and also beat Centennial earlier in the year, a team that pounded BSM the next night. So I think the phrase "niether HM nor Wayzata should be ranked higher than BSM" is questionable. It seems as though the teams are pretty even and despite the head-to-head loss I think Wayzata has the more impressive resume thus far.

I do agree they both belong in Tier 3 along with Blaine, just wouldn't say clear cut one is better than the other at this point in the year.

Has Eden Prairie done anything that spectacular this year to merit a Tier 2 ranking?

CDH took a couple hard knocks in the Schwans, getting hammered by Lakeville South 7-2, squeaking by Stillwater 3-2, and a big loss to Burnsville 6-0.. However, I take it, somewhat for a grain of salt since the backup goalie was in versus Burnsville, and that might have been his first game of the year. Does Burnsville move up???

The CDH offense might be showing some concerns as it looks like the line of Kinne, Barbato and Perron produced just 4 goals in the 3-game tourney.. It was Raiders of the Lost Puck...

CDH will need to get production out of other lines... First 10 games, that line produced about 55 points....

Karl, get used to the jockeying in the ranks as it will be like this for the next 3 years as the talent is very deep in Minnesota at Senior, Junior and Sophomore ranks. Makes for some very enjoyable hockey.

I think a person can justify Blaine being in Tier II as much as Eden Prairie given that even though Eden Prairie's record is better (6-1), they certainly have not played the level of competition that Blaine has. Eden Prairie's only loss came to Edina; however, the rest of the teams they have played/beat are not in the top rankings. I assume they are still given the benefit of the doubt given that they are the reigning State champs. Time will tell. Just curious - why don't they play in the Schwan Cup?

Blaine has played (according to Karl's most recent rankings):

#1/AA Minnetonka (loss by 1 goal)
#2/AA Hill Murray (won by 2 goals)
#4/AA Edina (2x - loss both by 1 goal)
#10/AA Roseau (won by 1 goal)
#11/AA Osseo (won by 1 goal)
#1/A STA (won by 3 goals)

If you're going to put Rochester Century in Tier 4, you best have Brainerd at least in Tier 5. Brainerd dominated Century, even though the score was 2-0. Brainerd also beat Tech 4-2 and have a record of 7-2.

gomnhky you convinced me. Blaine belongs in Tier 2, even though they have been "just missing" against the very best.

I will go out on a limb here. I will put Edina in the Tier 1 with Minnetonka. I know Tonka has clearly been the class of MSHSL this year, but Edina has beaten Blaine twice and EP, so they should move up higher.

This tiering is also based on Edina's victory against Minnetonka tomorrow night.

I think Karl will have his work cut out for him after the schizophrenic showing by 2/3rds of the teams in the top 20 over the last couple weeks.

Lots of great matchups coming up in early January too!

No hiding I'm an Eagle fan, but I don't think they've done anything spectacular yet. Their schedule doesn't look near as strong as Tonka or Edina's schedule. We'll see how they stack up against Tonka.

Eagan is 8-0-1 so I guess they should be tier 2 then right, I mean based on your reasoning.

Wayzata needs to move up into tier 2 and Eden Prairie at least down to tier 3. This is a new season, Eden Prairie is not the same team as last year. With the loss of so many good players you cannot even call the team defending champs. Maybe the school but not the actual team. So they need to re earn the respect and not be given this free ride just because they were good last year and won it all.

Call this thread arguing with idiots   Mr. Zealot Eagan has a very nice 8-1 record (kudos) other than that they have not done rip in hockey. I seriously hope they make a title run this season it is great for the game. Eden Prairie on the other hand has a very fine cast of players returning from a AA State Championship. As well those same kids have title success at the youth level than on top of that a 5 win, 1 loss record to date.

Your calling me an idiot? What heck has EP done THIS YEAR not LAST YEAR. a BIG FAT NOTHING!! At least Eagan has a win over the #3 team Jefferson and a tourney win in the SSP Premier tournament. Who gives a rip what EP did last year, the rankings are for this year. Your the flippen idiot.

What should EP have done so far dink. Losing one game to Edina at Braemar is the only blemish on their record. Edina is alot better than what peaple are giving them credit for. Remember, the "defending champs"also lost to Edina twice last year. Where did they end up? So Eagan beats Jefferson in a fluke. Maybe Jefferson overlooked them because of their glorious history. Didn't this same Eagan team tie Burnsville. And winning the SSP tourney? Who was in it?

ep

Post by blueblood »

ep gets their shot to see if they are a top contender next week at tonka. w/o gardiner, i would rate the game as follows:

forwards - advantage ep
defense - advantage tonka
special teams - toss-up
goaltending - toss-up
home crowd - advantage tonka

my prediction: low scoring game with an over/under of 5.

Did not call you and idiot. suggested the thread be retitled "arguing with idiots". I did mention that you are a zealot in which case you are zealous with regards to Eagan which at 8-1 is a very good team but to rank them higher than Eden Prairie (and Jefferson to date) is simply hogwash. Facts are facts Eden Prairie is the reigning state AA CHAMPION and they are not 0-6 or 1-5 they are 5 WINS and 1 loss. The one loss is at Braemar where EP never wins and the stripes will keep it that way. Reading and thinking logically seems to be a challenge for some folks. Again I have no stake in either team. Would i like to see EP repeat? Absolutely! Would I like to see Eagan win a state title? For sure. Eagan sucess just adds to the fabric of our state and its hockey. One last note: I do think EP stands the better odds of doing such when comparing the 2 teams.
