Edina Abra Tournament

Will be interesting in reviewing the Stats. HM ran 4 lines through most of the Maple Grove game but sent 4th line to play JV yesterday against Hopkins and went to 3 lines but with penalties especially in the third against Hopkins relied heavily on top two units. I am sure both teams will be ready.

Happy to see Irondale avenge their 8th place finish a year ago. It will be fun to see how far this team can go. Looks like 2 games with Benilde and one against Roseville are the only thing stopping a perfect regular season. Sections can always be tough however.
I had a bad feeling my Hill team would come up short. But I am still happy with the week of play and beating Hopkins. I still think they can knock anyone in their section off this year. The trick is the section winner has to get through two super tough teams.

Saw the game. Shots were even (25 each I believe). Irondale scored on a few "weed wackers" at the net, pretty even game though. HM broke up their first line again and didn't put it back together until into the third period. I believe that the coach is trying to get the second line to pick up their pace by moving Doyle to the second line. The HM third line played very well. I counted four times that they were matched against Irondale's first line and the HM line only gave up 2 shots on net (one went in). This line could be the HM second line by Sections. The HM first line gave up their first goal of the year in the third period. This line is one of the top offensive lines in the State but they are also one of the top defensive lines in the State. HM needs to improve: D needs to step up to the puck more, they need to learn to trust the forwards to cover: more agressive pace from the second line; and (the obvious) more scoring from the second and third linesSparlimb wrote:I had a bad feeling my Hill team would come up short. First: I-Gina McDonald (Barnier, DeKanick), 16:43, pp.
Second: I-Barnier (Gina McDonald, Donovan), 2:27; HM-Brandt, 3:01, pp; I-Barnier (Gina McDonald), 6:18.
Third: HM-Brandt (Pendleton), 0:57; I-Hanson (Tahti), 11:54; I-Gina McDonald (Lorence, Petrangelo), 15:36, pp.
Saves:
I-Gillian McDonald 7-9-6--22;
HM-McKeever 6-6-9--21
Irondale's big advantage yesterday was in goalie Gillian McDonald - she not only outplayed HM's top goalie Allie McKeever but she stopped Hannah Brandt on several great goal mouth scrambles - if she can play like that Irondale can win it all.
It was kind of a Blaine FHIT reunion as the Brandt's, Pendleton and Curtis trained with Gina and Gillian McDonald there last summer - the training definately changed the game/hands of Hannah Brandt
Based on what I saw Irondale really only has two lines - Gina McDonald leads one and Megan Lorence the other. They join each other and have a very effective Power Play. In the D zone they kind of circle the wagon to pack it in to protect the goal and block shots - if a shot gets to the net they seldom allow a rebound shot. They play a very physical game - they will take penalties with the style but seems to work.
Hill Murray had a good Tournament and maybe took a step forward - against Hopkins they used the talent they have very well - they just need to keep getting better. The above omments on the top line are right they are very good in all three zones. The rotation of Doyle from wing with Brandts to skating with McDowell and Lund did seem to give the team spark. The combination were:
Fabian 10th-H. Brandt 10th-M. Brandt 11th;
Doyle 12th-McDowell 12th-Lund 11th;
Cussick 9th grader-Bobrowski 8th-Heller 10th
The HM third unit was put together a couple of weeks ago when Cussick came up from the JV wearing 22 she stood out with her small size, hard forecheck and game/puck sense - she and Bobrowski are two of the smallest, hardest working girls in HS hockey always flying around - they both remind me of Hayle Hill at WB. Called the Kiddie line by many at the Tournament they stood out - if they find a way to score they may find more time. If the second and thrid units kick in scoring HM can play with anyone.
I have seen a lot of HS hockey games this year - there are many collectively deeper and overall more taletened teams but none that play together and use the talent they have better than Irondale.

Well Joe, you hit on exactly the achilles heal of Irondale. Two lines. And for most of sections last year, they'd run McDonald and Lorence on a line together, and one would come out with the second line, then back to both, then the other stayed out. It can work, but man those girls can get tired. Also McDonald got hurt last year and never was really herself until the offseason. So they need to avoid any and all injuries and make sure they come to play every night. I've watched them play enough so-so teams that they leave in the game. Much like my HM boys teams when they play SSP or Richfield. If you are good enough to crush a team, you need to score early and often. One goal games are too easy to lose. Irondale does have a much easier section this year as Blaine is way down, Moundsview doesn't look as good as last year and I haven't paid attention to Centennial, who I believe was the #1 seed last year. I certainly plan to see the Roseville v Irondale game as it should be really fun. I know the Irondale girls are very excited with the result this week. All in all, a great tourney to watch.joehockey wrote:Irondale's big advantage yesterday was in goalie Gillian McDonald - she not only outplayed HM's top goalie Allie McKeever but she stopped Hannah Brandt on several great goal mouth scrambles - if she can play like that Irondale can win it all.

Joe,
There were lots of FHIT girls in the tourney. I've been watching the box scores and many of the FHIT girls seem to be doing very well this year. I'm probably missing a few but here is a partial list of the FHIT girls in the ABRA tourney:
Gina McDonald
Gillian McDonald
Maggie Pendleton
Mikayla Curtis
Hannah Brandt
Marissa Brandt
Corinne Buie
Greer Vogl
Ari Reid
Morgan Fritz-Ward
I'm sure I'm missing some but the point is I think these girls all are making great strides in development.

Few weedwackers?? Who cares! That's hockey! The score was 5-2. Let's see they beat Edina and HM and Blake earlier. Impressive in my opinion.
Yes, Irondale has only two lines and what lines they are. Finally I hope they get the credit they deserve and be #1. Meghan Lorence and Gina McDonald are to of the top players in the state and add a Ashley Bye and a goalie in Gillian McDonald and what more do you need. I'm sure there are others I'm not familiar with.
Most teams only have one and maybe two lines and I respect coaches that realize it and play to win. This isn't youth hockey and if you have a special team whether it be 5, 7 or 10 players deep you owe it to the girls to try to win. I'm tired of people saying this team plays 3 lines and it will help them come tournament time. That's only because they have 3 good lines! (Very few teams) I've seen Roseau, Warroad, Irondale, Elk River, Eagan and Red Wing last year go to state with 2 lines or less. They're used to playing that way. If you have only two lines play em and they'll be conditioned come tournament time. You can play others more when you're blowing teams out.
Winning isn't the only thing but it sure is a lot more fun!
Way to go Irondale!! #1 in my opinion!!!

2nd year in a row that Hopkins stumbled badly at this tourney. The girls really played some of thier worst hockey all season the last couple days. We are hoping they climb up from here like they did last year.
Great job from the Knights IMO with a much stronger 2nd line than last year, I expect they will make some noise at the end.
I doubt any team will hold the #1 spot in the rankings for long this year, from the top 10 teams I have seen. No one is bullet proof or as dominant as the ponies and raiders were last year.
Hats off to the hosts, the venue change was great for this tournament. Only complaint would be the $9 daily gate fee with no weeklong pass, this seems a bit on the high side. Other than that top notch all the way.

I know how much you love all of these girls as I do. We want everyone to do well unless they're playing our teams.
