Why is minnesota the state of hockey and Michigan is not??

THIS is the question.. A guy is trying to tell me why michigan is such a better hockey state, from HS all the way to the pros, how better players come from MI , they have better teams, better players come out of MI in general etc etc , hes an idiot, so its hard to take him serious as he is making no valid points or iving me any good examples.. So what do you guys think ??

Because Minnesota had 12 players and the head coach from the greatest hockey event in the history of the U.S. - 1980 Miracle on Ice... that put the stamp on why Minnesota is the STATE of Hockey.....

true. But all he keeps bragging about is the msu player tropp and how he's the best in the country. And how all Minnesota teams suck and Michigan has more quality players etc etc. Michigan is the real state of hockey bla bla. Also Michigan produces better players from hs and more Michigan born players go d1 and pro. It's just getting annoying listening to his rants. Just wondered if anybody had some good defensive stats for me. I mentioned the 5 minnesota players in the world juniors but that wasn't good enough I guess

According to USA Hockey, Minnesota produces the most Division 1 hockey players, and that isn't even close. Currently, slightly more than 40% of Division 1 hockey players are Minnesotans.

Minnesota also has the highest number of players drafted by NHL teams every year, and it has been that way for some time. However, both Michigan and Massachussets produce quite a bit of hockey talent as well. Just not as much as Minnesota.

Not surprising though. If you look at last year's high school hockey rankings, Minnesota high school hockey teams absolutely dominate the rankings.

Minnesota State Tourney sells out an NHL arena. Michigan, with nearly twice our population, gets around 3,000 fans for their state championship HS game. 19,000>3,000.

Minnesota is the location for the US Hockey Hall of Fame. Youngy, thanks for finding the stat breakdown.

My point about Miracle on Ice is WHY Minnesota was designated as the State of Hockey. Detroit is labled Hockeytown USA, but it appears even the national broadcasters acknowledge Minnesota as State of Hockey.

It appears the amount of players in each state according to USA Hockey is close, with Minnesota getting the edge. I am not sure if we can argue modern day.

According to hockeyreference.com, Minnesota has produced exactly 200
NHL players and Michigan 118. Michigan has Modano #1, Minnesota has #2 Housley

You know, rapi??... I think you hit on the key element.

It's not JUST about the players. I mean, if there's more population in one state, chances are there will be more players, but the State of Hockey is about not just the players, but the FANS, too..

4 - you forgot Leopold. And three MN born players (Tom Kurvers, Chris Marinucci and Marty Sertich) won the Hobey at other schools as well.

clearly Minnesota holds it's own from all levels hs thru the pros bt it's nice to see actual stats on how many good players come from mn. So if anyone is bored

who are the Minnesota born NHL players , And who are NHL players that either went to hs or college in MN? Tj oshie I'm assuming is the most recent NHL recruit and Crosby the best?

This is only Minnesota born.. Guys like Brett Hull or Sid Crosby or Wayne Gretzky's son going to Shattuck for a bit.?? Have no idea where to get a list like that or how long it will take.

I would be interested in finding out how many regular season sell outs the wings have had vs the wild since they came in the league?! Every time the wings are on tv it seems like the building is empty! Way to go hockeytown!!!

I think that is more to do with the state of the economy in Detroit....I've heard some reports that the Detroit area is experiencing 40%+ unemployment rates.

Detroit's average PAID attendance has been consistently top 1-3 since about 1989-90... according to hockeyresearch.com... Average about 19,500-20,000

Lee, that guy is the reason I cheer for the opponent at very UAA game I attend. I always get a kick out of people in Anchorage asking me if I've been to an ECHL playoff game there because it gets pretty crazy. Doesn't even hold a candle to a section final at the DECC.

Michigan has a vastly different developmental model. They take their best players and squeeze them all on the same teams. Does Michigan turn out high-end players? Absolutely.

Hockey participation in Michigan is pretty low compared to Minnesota. Kids playing everywhere on outdoor ice is less. Their HS structure is much less impressive.

Tell this guy to strap on the skates and go to an outdoor rink some weekend. That alone should help him see how Minnesota is different.
