Some of the top-scoring freshmen for Tuesday games:
Marcus Stoulil, Austin had two goals in their 10-1 win over Sleepy Eye. He has 6 goals and 1 assist now (I trust that you can add two numbers together to get the points, eh?).
Mike Welch (3-6), Redwood Valley, 2g 1a in 6-4 win over Morris-Benson, who had Tanner Picht [10-8] picking up 1g 2a that game.
Mario Bianchi (5-2), Academy of Holy Angels, with 2g in 13-1 slaughter of Farmington.
Chris Forney (1-7) and Ryan Tapani [7-8] each get a goal in their team's respective wins (Thief River Falls and Providence Academy).
Ian Johnson (5-2) of Park Rapids with a goal in their 5-0 over Northern Lakes.

Gonna have to agree with you on this one. Even though there are all good players on the list the names mentioned above have a tougher schedule than some of the others and they are producing some nice numbers against top rated teamseastsideguy wrote:Really impressive numbers from

Yeah, there seems to be a discrepancy.starmvp wrote:I do not think that Coatta scored last night
This link from MnHockeyHub shows him scoring at the 16:43 mark of the first period.

If true, he would have 12 goals on the season. BUT, the MnHockeyHub summary shows only 11 goals in 13 games.
I don't know!

I know that it is a simple argument, and thus somewhat compelling: freshmen playing against tougher opponents have a harder time putting up the points than those with soft schedules. But there is more to it than that.Nobodyonya wrote:Gonna have to agree with you on this one. One must also consider the teammates that surround those freshmen. Do you think that Coatta would find it easier to put up points playing for Walker/Hackensack/Akeley since they have an easier schedule? I would argue that playing with the top-ranked team makes it easier. Of course, one must be an exceptional freshman to play for the top-ranked team, so maybe this schedule issue is a washout.
Let's not relegate the outstate schools to the dustbin as seems to be done in so many threads. It is all hockey. And most of these players will end their career with high school, so let them enjoy their moment in the spotlight.

Yes very impressive. Coach smalley has done a great job with the hunters. Freshman Alex Thompson (Zach's twin) did a great job defensively as well.

Here is another way to look at this, rather than total points. Not saying its better, just a different way. Idea is to look at contribution to the team, as measured by percentage of total team points. This may reduce the impact of strong team/weak schedule effect that you get if you just look at individual points.
Based on current numbers on the Hub, and if my math is right, the players listed on this post would rank as follows on this measure (% of total team points):
Picht - Morris Benson (23.3%)
Chambers - No Lakes (17.4%)
Fasching -Apple Valley (17.1%)
Osterberg -Lakeville So. (16.5%)
Talarico -Denfeld (16.4%)
Mettenberg -Prairie Centre (16.2%)
Horton -Tartan (15.9%)
Reibling -Holy Family (15.4%)
Tapani -Providence (13.5%)
Roo -Totino (13.2%)
Besse -Benilde (13.2%)
Coatta -Minnetonka (9.8%)
LaVelle -Hill Murray (7.8%)

Yeah. This may be the metric that allows for comparative importance of any particular player. Good idea.heresaymatters wrote:Here is another way to look at this, rather than total points. Are you figuring what percentage of the team's goals that each freshmen has a point on, or are you figuring percentage of total points, both goals and assists.
It seems to me the best way to look at it is to figure out what percentage of goals each kid has a point on, roughly speaking, seems more accurate in terms of determining how each player produces a benefit?
Just some thoughts,

Yeah, I think that that was what heresaymatters was suggesting. If a team has scored 50 goals, and a particular freshman had 20 points, then he factored into 40% of the team's goals.hockeyfan893 wrote:Are you figuring what percentage of the team's goals that each freshmen has a point on, or are you figuring percentage of total points, both goals and assists.

Going by that metric, Tanner Picht of Morris-Benson is more important to his team than the others. It does not mean he is the best freshman, but the most important to his team on a point basis. It balances out the schedule issue. It does not, however, give info regarding defensive defensemen or goalies.
Early games reporting on Saturday:
Levi Talarico (27%) with 1g 3a in Duluth Denfeld's 5-3 win over Rogers
Hill-Murray downs Tartan 3-0 with Zach Lavalle (25%) picking up 2g and Jake Horton (43%) getting NOTHING.
Morris-Benson over Worthington 7-2; for MoBe:
Tanner Picht 1g (43%)
Luke Schwarz 1g 2a (23%)
Mac Beyer 1a (18%)
The percentages are a player's points divided by the total team goals. In other words, that particular player factors into that percentage of a team's goals.

Watching some of the Varsity freshman. The 3 from Benilde, seem that they are a non factor when playing against quality teams. Some of those high school teams would lose to a quality A bantam team..
