A stupid way to look at PWb1 hockey
Somewhat of an uneducated and rather boring look into 11 and 12 year old hockey that I would not put whole lot of emphasis if I were reading this. Actually, I find it odd that I am evening taking the time to write this but, whatever.
I have had a chance to see a lot of PWA and PWB1 hockey this year for reasons that I hope would be fairly obvious and relate directly to the fact that I have a driver’s license and my passengers do not.
There is quite a variety of talent on teams and throughout the metro area. Specifically, in the larger associations there are B1 players that are A talent and in other associations many B1 players playing A. I am not stating anything new here but there is a direct correlation to large associations dominating B1 hockey due to the fact that they have the numbers which leads to A talent playing on B1 teams and therefore winning more games.
I am also of the opinion the larger associations, specifically Edina, Wayzata and OMG, should field two A teams (an upper and a lower) as they have the numbers and the depth.
NOTE: I cannot make opinions on the Dist 11 – 16. I am sure there are some great PeeWee hockey teams and players from those districts but I frankly don’t know enough to comment on them.
District 1 – sorry, not too much to report out of this district in regards to ranked teams. Mpls Park Orange, a team that also plays a half schedule in D3, is the best team to come out of Dist 1 with a 7win/2loss record. Their record in D3 is 1win/1loss/2ties. They have the ability to surprise a top D3 team.
Highland is another team playing a split district schedule with Dist 2. See Dist2 for more info on Highland.
District 2 – no doubt that Roseville is the team to beat. A recent tie with Edina Green is validation enough to put them at the top the list. Stillwater Black has an impressive 6win/0loss/1tie record but every game has been close and don’t seem to have much scoring punch will eventually catch up to them. They play Roseville on Jan 11 so that will prove to be a good match up between Roseville scoring attack and Stillwater Blacks defense.
If Highland were to play an entire Dist 2 schedule they would give Stillwater Black a run but not enough to knock of Roseville. Tartan and Stillwater Red round out the top of the field of District 2 with WBL trying to establish some consistency to be considered in the upper half of the district.
District 3 – you should probably just change the name of this district to Way/OMG instead of District 3. Wayzata fields three B1 teams with two upper B1’s and one lower B1 and OMG fields three balanced B1 teams. The best team coming out of Dist 3 is OMG Gold followed by Wayzata Blue and coming in third would be OMG Crimson. Wayzata Gold has the talent to contend but has not shown consistency yet but they could easily turn the tables the second half of the year push into the top 3.
I expect Mpls Park Orange to surprise one of these top 4 teams this year.
District 4 – Fairbault is the best team out of Dist 4 but have not played anyone yet to warrant consideration despite their gaudy 9win/2loss/1tie record.
District 5 – Crow River Orange is the top, followed closely by STMA and then Sartell. STMA could slide into the top spot by the end of the year but I do not see any of the teams coming out of Dist5 contending to crack the top 10, maybe top 20.
District 6 – Edina Green is the best in the state without question. Very fast squad. All games have been blowouts except for a 4-4 tie with Roseville and the next closest game being a 5-2 win over OMG Crimson. The teams competing for second is a cluster – Edina White is certainly a contender but they had a four day period where they went 0win/2loss/1tie which gives some hope to EP Black, Shakopee and Mtka Black.
Burnsville and Chaska/Chan is knocking on the door but I have them ranked 6th and 7th in any order in the district but could move up significantly by the end of the year.
Overall, District 6 is very solid and will be heard from in February and March.
District 8 – Eagan Blue and Woodbury Blue and Lakeville North are the top 3 in Dist8. Have not seen Lakeville North play but their district record warrants them to be considered despite having no other relevant information.
Rosemount Gold, Eagan Green, Rochester teams and Woodbury White would be considered, in any order, ranked 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 out of Dist8.
District 10 - Sauk Rapids is at the top with an undefeated season thus far. Big and strong team with talent that can skate with the larger associations.
Take Blaine, Centennial and Elk River, Champlin Park and St.Cloud Black and flip a coin. All very close with maybe a slight nod to Champlin Park as they whooped Centennial 5-1 and gave Sauk Rapids their closest district game yet with a 2-0loss.
To summarize – the Metro Top 20 are:
1. Edina Green – D6
2. Roseville – D2
3. Edina White – D6
4. OMG Gold – D3
5. Sauk Rapids – D10
6. Shakopee – D6
7. Wayzata Blue – D3
8. OMG Crimson – D3
9. Eagan Blue – D8
10. Stillwater Blk – D2
11. Wayzata Gold – D3
12. Minnetonka Black – D6
13. Woodbury Blue – D8
14. Champlin Park – D10
15. Centennial – D10
16. Blaine – D10
17. Elk River – D10
18. Burnsville – D6
19. EP Black – D6
20. Tartan – D2

Just an FYI that doesn't really change your analysis- I believe Roseville has already defeated Stillwater Black in the Woodbury Tourney.

Elk River will have a very tough task repeating this year. The team is not as strong as last year's Black team based on the three times I've seen them play so far this year.Ozzie82 wrote:Great work shoot. No need to be sheepish about why you are ranking these teams.
IIRC Edina Green was the team to beat last year too and someone from Elk River predicted on this board that they'd beat Edina for the state title... and they did. So I will not contradict Goalie Dude or Wisconsinguy!
I guess the only question I have is this. If a team does not skate at the top level in an agegroup or division are we really surprised that their team is ranked higher then other teams within the same district who do skate at the highest level?
So in reality all the rest are sending their second cuts against another orgs top kids.
