I'll bite: I don't have a dog in the fight but I did see games at Edina, EP tournaments as well as talked with people at North St. Paul.

The top Ten are:

Elk River (Won Edina)
EP (Won EP and has done well in shared practice with Wayzata)
Wayzata (won NSP)
STMA (Up and coming program, feeding off of last years success)
Stillwater (Someone on this sight wants them rated)
Maple Grove (top player has been hurt all season and still doing well)
Centennial (fiesty group that can compete with all teams mentioned)
Edina
Burnsville
Rosemount

Tonka played MV too.
Just one of those nights.

We were sluggish after a brutal 5 games in 4 days run.

Played hard the last 5 minutes after being down 2-0. Scored to make it 2-1 and had a goal taken away with 37 seconds to go which would have tied it.

No worries just tired. Outshot them again but only 14-6

I still think Stillwater is a top 5 team.
Saw game last night. First let's stop making excuses for Stillwater. MV had just completed a four game three day run themselves. Both teams played hard. Low shot count, but alot of attempted shots due to the way the kids contested scoring oppts. Testament to defense on both sides. Stillwater came on late after MV had territorial advantage mid 2nd to early 3rd. Fairly even the rest of the game. Disallowed goal was not even close to being counted.

Stillwater is still the team to beat in D2, but MV will challenge them.

Regarding NSP tourney, MV lost 3-2 to Tonka after leading 2-1 into 3rd. Lakeville just outplayed them (one of those nights) and they then swept NSP and SP Saints.

I know the consensus is that Stillwater, Tonka, Wayzata, STMA, Elk River and Centennial are the elite, but MV has competed well with this group and should be given their due. Sometimes associations just get better.

Proof is in the pudding...

One thing to note...many of the coaches will start shifting kids around at this time, especially if they are into teaching the kids and not just winning so expect some teams to loose a few over the next several weeks as kids get used to different positions. Some teams may run kids at the same position all year in squirts and some may not. Just an observation from past years.
So your saying your team won't be putting their best to win lineup on the ice during the next few weeks?
Actually, no kid on a team just have seen a lot of teams shake up after the holiday tourneys, kind of like the 13 kid issue, if all you want to do is win you put the same lines together all year and the kids don´t really learn how to play the entire game. At 9 and 10 years old some coaches believe they all need to play all positions. There it no ax to grind. i have seen it for several years, lot´s of loses by the some teams that will shift line ups. I would say expect some of the better teams to lose a few more that is all.

Top Teams...anyone wins on any night Beat the next group 7 out of 10
Elk River - Good team well coached, a few speedsters... play a nice game
EP - Goaltending looks good, may not be as deep as some of he others here
Wayzata- 15 skaters deep, excellent team, well balanced
Tonka - No major weaknesses, should be steady
STMA - Goaltending and Defense very good
Stillwater- Very deep skating, goaltending up and down, agressive team that takes lots of penalties
Centennial - Similar to others above, no quite as deep skating but overall well coached and play a nice game

Next
Edina - not as much skill or as deep as past years
Mounds View - Depth an issue as well good defense
Lakeville South - Close to fitting in above group, not a lot of weaknesses
OMG - A step slower than most above, sounds like their best player is hurt which would change this team
Jefferson - Depth is their issue 2 lines then big drop off

Trout, good work.

I have seen most of those teams play and I think your list is a very fair assessment. Might be a few that we are all missing, but this looks like a good list.

MN Wild,

Yes, proof is in the pudding. See on Feb 12th! I've been told you will be in Duluth as well. Is that the case?

I hope so.

Hey the gauntlet has been thrown! Will you guys meet in the balcony of the Heritgage Center? HAHAHA

Finally back to the days of "My dad can beat your dad" as opposed to "My 9 year old can beat your 9 year old".

The good news is it is all fun and the kids are gaining great life lessons.

I heard that Grand Rapids was trying to get scrimages down here but didn't hear how they did. I didn't see any northern teams in any of the two tourneys we played. might have to wait til Fargo.

Thanx DOG. I know Duluth has squirt age talent but I think they play for local play-grounds. Not sure how that works, but sounds cool.

Forgive me but ER getting too much love. How does Edina rate over the Ponies when defeated by the Ponies? EP is living off great goaltending but weak in other areas. Wayzata may be top team.

ER deserves top 10 for sure. Winning the Edina tourn does mean something. Wayzata and STMA top two. Speaking of Edina, they are over-rated at the Squirt A level.
BTW I heard this am that Waconia beat EP 2-1 last night.

Can anyone verify who won the Spring Lake Park tourney yesterday? It was Sartell and Mahtomedi in the final.

Don't know who won the Spring Lake Park tourney but the Ponies won the Rochester tourney in convincing fashion defeating Andover, Mound West Tonka, Rogers and Rochester in that order.

Having seen every team play this year, with the exception of Elk River, here it goes: Since most everyone is putting Elk River at the top, I will put them up there also:

E.R
E.P.
Wayzata
Stillwater
Maple Grove
Rosemount
Burnsville
STMA
MNTKA
Cenntenial

The top three are by far the best in the metro area, they will be flopping from 1-2-3 all season long.

I wouldn't hang your hat to high on winning that tourney, that's not the toughest competition

True enough but that gives the ponies 2 tourney wins (Brooklyn Park and Rochester) and a 3rd in Edina. Probably should have won the Edina tourney as well.

Great hardworking group of kids.

Those are two tournaments with mid-level competition. Explain to me how you should have probably won the Edina trouney, I'm very interested in your explanation

I don't get Burnsville being in top 10 or even top 20. They have several losses and recently lost to Shakopee....
