That about sums it up.I wish I had a final count on the penalties, but I'm guessing East took at least ten. At least 4 of Tonka's goals were on the PP.
For the first period and a half, it was a very even game. Then, for some reason, East ramped up the physical play. It proved to be a fatal error. They had a tiny bit of initial success slowing down Tonka playing like that, but it came apart as the penalties mounted; the 2nd goal came on a 5-on-3 in the closing moments of the second. Despite that, East pulled within one early in the 3rd and had a shot, but they continued to take stupid penalties and it all degenerated from there. Several individuals who will remain anonymous visibly lost their composure as things went on. I was disappointed.
Would a different style of play have changed the outcome of the game? I don't really think so; Tonka sure is worth all the hype that's been heaped on them. But it definitely would've changed the score, and the game wouldn't have left such a sour taste.
If East goes on to play the way they did against Blaine, they'll be at the X in March. If they play the way they did tonight, they'll be on their couches watching Elk River or Andover. It really is that simple.

I think a more fair statement is if East plays like they do against everyone else BUT Tonka, they will be there in St. Paul.
Hopefully, Randolph will review the film and evaluate the penalties taken and make both the mental and physical corrections.
If the four PP goals are accurate, I think LEE offered the stat that Tonka's PP unit was at 36%.... This has got to put them over 40% now, and that is just sick.
I would personally like to review the tape on how they run the PP - or is it just that the talent level is that good the execution is easy?

From what I have heard, Glockner could start for most other teams in the state. Yes, Tonka's backup goalie was in, and he played quite well. There was no way he could have stopped the two goals he let in.
The official tally was 11 penalties for East, and 4 PP goals for Tonka. On the other side, Tonka did have 7 penalties too; they didn't take East's increased physical play lying down. But they're the sort of team that can get away with a bit of that. For East, it was suicide.
And yes, the Tonka power play is one of, if not the, best I've seen at the high school level. They have great movement all around the perimeter, and there always is someone on the doorstep to put away the rebounds.

Justin Holl got the hat trick, Schutt with 2 and Coatta the other...
... so in one sense, 5 on 5, East did a fairly decent job against the Tonka's big line, but moreso, the positives are that the second and third lines show they can matchup fine. I think it's fair to say that Tonka's first line will always create matchup problems for every team.
But, the penalties do reflect that it's awfully hard to generate offense when you're down a man.... East only garnered 17 shots, it appears.
You will get the rematch in the state championship game!!

East definitely held their own 5-on-5; they still were outscored 2-1, but they were outshooting Tonka after one and shots were dead even after two, even with Tonka's PPs towards the end of the 2nd. Things only fell apart in the 3rd. While that was encouraging, it's also the reason for my frustration, since this game could have ended looking a lot better than it did.

I would guess it's not easy to assess the 5-on-5 matchup in this game because of the number of penalties. I suspect that about half the game was played with someone in the box, which screws up lines and flow.
Glockner played very well, and with respect to the power play, the personnel right now must be different, since I believe that Gardiner has been a mainstay. If it's that good now without him, think of what it will be like when he's back.

As for the penalties, there was only 1 on each team in the 1st, and 1 on East/0 on Tonka through the first half of the 2nd. Then things started getting physical, and the rest was history.
