Can anyone give us ONE example of a Private School coach or administrator being present at a Bantam Hockey game and then approaching a player/parent and saying "you/your son needs to come to Holy Smokes High School"

I honestly have heard the claims, but haven't witnessed the action.
has anyone? or is this claim just a baseless exageration to explain why some schools happen to have more success than others?

Is it possible that some parents simply want their kids to have a private education or is it just hockey 100% of the time?
We met a very nice man at our sons District 2 mite jamboree. He was dressed as a clown and also handed out Hill Murray balloons and candy. :D

Now, Now we all know Coach Housely doesn’t have good communication skills. He wasn’t the clown, he blew up the balloons. It’s good to see our local schools making charitable donations.

Janze, I know for a fact that this happens, not by coaches or administrators, but as one post said, it is done by parents of a particular school. My son was contacted through parents at two different private schools, for him to come and play hockey. I don't know where it was facilitated or instructed, but it does happen. Good topic, and if you think this doesn't happen, you are delusional.

Private schools

Post by stpaul »

Of course this stuff happens. Parents talk to parents, coaches talk to coaches, etc. How does Hopkins get all of the best basketball players west of the Mississippi River to enroll? How did a recent future Mounds View hockey star go to White Bear Lake HS? It's not just private schools. Of course private schools recruit. They have to recruit for all of their students.

this is a very good point. you are correct. private schools are all about recruting. do you listen to the ads on MPR? every other one is for breck, blake, and spa. same ads in a number of local magazines. they recruit artists, thespians, athletes, debaters, mathematicians, etc.

And the archdicese does too. hard to miss all their adds for catholic schools - especially around christmas time.

are these schools specifically targeting hockey players? Yes and No. The parents of other students - and the students themselves, are recruting all sorts of kids to make their school better in whatever it is that a particular kid finds important.

And Hopkins and Jefferson does the same - just not the advertising part.

Now I am perplexed. How can one be both a recent star and a future star?? The answer will be interesting, unless you meant, "Recently, a future .... star ...."

Not sure about them for sure, but when I live in Mpls, I remember seeing a Washburn ad on the corner of 54th and Lyndale. I know in Mpls they recruit for their magnet programs, don't know how it works elsewhere.

When you look at ANY school; would they prefer to have a student or a student who will potentially play a sport/activity for their school? Whether it be the ten spots left for the freshman class at a private, the 15 spots in a schools magnet program, etc, etc, if you have two players of close to equal qualifications and one plays a sport vs not or one plays three sports vs just one you would be silly not to pursue the one who plays more.

I'm still curious what is crossing the line as far as "recruiting" goes. A coach can't seek a kid out, but if a parent/student casually emails a coach and says,"do you think our son would make your team if at your school?" and he responds truthfully, is that against the rules? Etc, etc. People say things on here that are very rude just to knock on programs, but where is the line drawn really?

Recent future star

Post by stpaul »

It's Ryan Wolter. He transferred for his sophomore year from MV to WBL. He was MV's future superstar. It hasn't quite turned out that way at WBL although he is a solid player.

Seriously though, as a junior at Hill-murray who has been here since seventh grade, I have had my own fair share of chats with kids on the hockey team about this subject. From what I've learned, generally it isn't the school the makes the initial contact. Yes it could happen if the school has a reasonable reason to believe the kid might be considering the school such as if their parent went here, their cousins go here, they attend a Catholic middle school, etc, but that is rare. Usually the family will contact the school first and it will go from there.

And it ain't just hockey players. I didn't play hockey, but the minute I showed interest in Hill I got mailings, invites to "Get to Learn the School" breakfasts, and even a call from a current student with similar interests to me. Of course I'd been getting the mailings since I was born cause my dad went to school there and I'd always went to a Catholic school.

But yea, private schools do this for every student because they have to. They play off your interests be it baseball, theater, religion, basketball, music, or hockey.

And they're damn good at it.

Thank you for your point of view. My eyes have been opened up about this topic even if i joke around. Now that Northsider brings it up Private schools HAVE to "recruit" every student because unlike public schools, if they don't get enough kids they won't get money from the gov't and shut down. Now more often than not they will get a good amount of kids.

Someone said earlier that all schools recruit to a certain extent. This is very true. I know of a public school that has a summer hockey camp where boys who are in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade attend. It is run by the varsity coach and every boy who takes part is give a jersey with the team logo on the front. Is it direct recruiting? No but it does get kids excited about playing high school hockey for that coach.
