Watched EP beat Edina. EP was down a bunch of players and they still beat Edina. EP is too big and strong for that Edina team. Edina may be silghtly quicker but the majority of that team does not finish well. I think Edina can skate past almost every team, but with EP, they just aren't strong enough, especially up front. EP has a better balance of speed and size. These are two of the best teams in State and its fun to watch the intensity of the parents.

Have you been to any of the 12UA games this year between Edina and Eden Prairie?

It's a very friendly, classy rivalry.

Parents on each side are extremely respectful of the other, knowing full well that in such a rivalry the game could easily go either way. Of course, each side wants their team to win, but, in the end, it's just a game and life goes on until the next game.

Note (the tournament director's nightmare occurred and Centennial was eliminated): Although Centennial won all three pool games, so did OMG. So, it came down to tie breakers: head-to-head, goal differential, goals allowed, penalties. For the first tie-breaker, head-to-head didn't occur because of the unbalanced pools. For the second and third tie-breakers, Centennial had to beat EP by at least 4 or by at least 3 and not allow EP to score 2. If the Centennial had beaten EP by 3, but EP had scored 2, then the fourth tie-breaker (penalties) would have occurred (OMG had 8, Centennial had 8 in the first 2 games and at least 1 in the EP game).

Also, EP had reached the Sunday game before playing Centennial (win or lose) because of Anoka's win against Wayzata which tied Anoka and EP, but EP won the head-to-head tie-breaker to Anoka in the pool.

I personally think it's a little weird having unbalanced pools--in this case, I think Centennial actually got a much tougher draw as a result. Assuming for the moment that both Blaine and Centennial win all three pool games, then what's a fair tie breaker? (Goal differential seems like comparing apples to oranges.) I don't know--and the tournament rules (as published on the tournament web site) don't specify either.

I'm sure they wanted 16 teams and ended up with 14. That's the only time a tourney would be set up like that. A Tourney Directors nightmare and why they occasionally offer free berths to get to 16 teams.
