Mayo's future
This year has been one of the worst years in the school's history. However, I've heard the future is looking bright. According to some people I've talked to, Mayo has some pretty nice talent coming up in the Bantam system. Hopefully they stick with the school. Can anyone comment on if this is true or not?

Mayo is in the same boat JM was a couple of years ago and to a certain extent still is. When RYHA had 2 A teams divided by geography Mayo was able to get enough kids from the A team to field competitive teams. Then RYHA started fudging the boundries allowing some kids who should have been on the South team but were going to be at Cenury to be on the North team, this took spots away from JM kids, soon no or just 1 or 2 JM kids were playing bantam A hockey as the north team was just Century and Lourdes kids, JM then really fell back and hasn't been competitive for a number of years. Mayo people complined and wanted to start their own hockey association, that was shot down by RYHA and since that failed attempt RYHA changed from 2 bantam A teams divided by geography to 2 bantam A teams divided by talent, guess where nearly all the top kids went to high school? Century and Lourdes. Now Rochester went from 1 team that really struggled to 2 teams and it went fast. Mayo's team that graduated in 2009 were the last to play under the South banner I believe.
Now RYHA went to 1 bantam A team, I don't know if that will help or hurt Mayo but there's no question that dropping the North /South divide really hurt Mayo and the quality of players they get out of the youth program. Even if the South team wasn't as good as the North team many years at least the Mayo kids were able to play together for a few years prior to high schoo which is a huge advantagel. A big question will be whether 1 bantam A team will provide enough to field any competitive high school programs while most teams have 1 bantam A team feeding them. Fair or not what happens at RHYA board meetings goes a long ways towards determining Mayo's future and as long as RYHA wants to win a bantam A state title above all else some high schools will really struggle.

Goldy313 that is very interesting info. With that I don't understand why the RYHA is so content on winning a bantam A state title. The main goal is to compete at the high school level not the bantam level. I am saying this looking at the big picture of course. So you are telling me that in Rochester they see the youth program as being bigger than High School hockey as far as competeing. Well that says it all then and explains alot of things. You would think the parents and board members who usually have kids in the program would make decisions based on what's best for there kids future in regards to a high school experience. Youth hockey is Youth hockey plain and simple.

Explain to me why is youth hockey all about high school hockey? They way I look at it, it's about youth hockey. Putting kids where they can be successful and learn to love the game.
Looking at this years RYHA Bantam A/B programs. The Bantam A team is about 500 and lost all games in Roseau. The two B teams are about the same. By your logic RYHA should have 4 A team that wouldn't win less then 30% of their games.......I don't see to many kids sticking around to lose the majority of their games...of course they play in the ever difficult BIG 9!
I wouldn't have a problem with it being about High School Hockey but RYHA has paid for 4 rinks and rents the ice...the High Schools....well some of the coaches have shown up for a couple of Bantam games this season!

I don't think it has to be all about high school hockey but it has to realize that their success depends on viable high school hockey.
Having 4 A teams wouldn't be smart anymore, when Century opened RYHA was fielding 2 bantam A teams, 3 bantam B teams and had 5 house teams. That was when they should have gone to 3 A teams as they had the numbers, now they're chasing bantam A success with 1 team and less kids to pick from. Winning and losing hockey games shouldn't be the main goal for youth hockey, it should be giving kids a place to play hockey. There is no reason why RYHA can't put kids going to Mayo together and have a bantam team, remember it was RYHA who wanted out of district 4 for competitive reasons, it is also RYHA who now won't field more than 1 bantam A team for competetive reasons. Amazing how things changed in only 1 year.
RYHA pays for some of the rinks, the taxpayers of Olmsted County also pay, the Mighty Ducks grant helped and for a couple of the rinks ISD 535 also payed for them. RYHA in and among themselves haven't payed for rink yet, they've all been partnerships with others.

Bummer about the injury. Hard to take after going through the hassle of a transfer. Expensive too, will he keep living in Roch? Hope he heals up and can play.itech22 wrote:clutterbuck22: One of the two Austin kids was eligible to play but he injured his knee in the last football game of the season and had surgery in November. Yeah he's still dressing up for games, but doesn't play. I think Mayo has found their goalie for next. The sophmore Mike DeBusman started last night against Winona. He played great. I know he gave up six goals, but they weren't all his fault. Alex VanGalder was demoted to Junior Varsity in order for DeBusman to play. It sounds like he is going to be the full-time goalie the rest of the way.mnmayonnaise wrote:Bummer about the injury. Hard to take after going through the hassle of a transfer. Note: This was the first time in Winona's school history that they defeated Rochester Mayo in boys hockey.
Goaltending is not Mayo's problem. Stop blaming your Goalies and RYHA for your problems . You should add the school Board for adding a High school, and don't forget your favorite, Lourdes recruits our kids.

Chezick, Kurth, Dennis, Voigt, the Wylams, to name a few. Debusman's performance last night was decent, but not spectacular...there were several goals i'm sure he'd like to have back. However goaltending is not Mayo's problem, if you take a look at the shots from nearly any game Mayo is getting blown out of the water, the goalies aren't stealing any games from teams but they also aren't losing games for Mayo that should be won. I hate to say it but until Mayo can stop getting their shots doubled or even tripled in games they don't stand a chance no matter how well their goalies play.Hockey1919 wrote:What kids have Lourdes recruited away from Mayo?

Goaltending and team defense are the issues.
You can't say that goaltending is not an issue. Even last night it was. The 5th goal was scored from the boardside hashmarks. Mayo's goalie was back in his net and beaten cleanly. That was the worst one and the most key one. There were 1-2 soft ones as well. The goalie made some great saves especially in the 1st.
Other games I've seen:
RW - goalie played well helping the win
JM - very iffy game
AL - bad game cost Mayo any chance at a win
Eastview - many soft goals
Century - the 2nd goal was from way out and the goalie was way off his angle, not to mention others, but that soft goal hurts as Mayo was playing well.
I'd say team morale goes way down on those goals and has an impact. High school goalies should be able to make those stops. If you look at the saves % of Mayo's goalies it tells you alot!
Team defense is not good in their own end. Too much running around, swinging sticks, and not enough work ethic. When you don't have very good talent, you have to work and be smart.

They have been outshot badly in some games, but usually just to the very good teams. Mayo outshot Farmington and lost 2-1.
Shots were close in a few other games they lost by a wide margin.
Right the 3 goalies have saves % of .810, .820, and .830. That is simply not good enough.
The other thing that had hurt is the Spencer Lee injury. He is their fastest guy and biggest offensive threat. He is still 3rd on the team in points! When is he due back?
A few key guys are not playing as well as they should either.
The immediate future is bleak. All the leading scorers are seniors again.

I would agree on both ends of this arguement. I have attended all but 2 games of mayo and would agree the goaltending has been a little soft at times. However here is a little stat for you. Over the last 10 games Mayo has been outscored 67 to 22. Do the math and they are scoring 2.2 goals a game and giving up 6.7 goals a game. They simply cannot score enough to win games and of coarse if you only score 2 goals a game you can't give up near 7 goals. So both ends of the ice including the goalie should be accountable for what is going on. If Mayo was scoring enough to win then I could see where you could point the finger at the goalie and defense but this is not the case. Bottom line is Mayo is bad all the way around and it is not going to be any better next year. They did hang with Winona the other night though which surprises me. It actually was 5-4 with an empty netter. This team actually could upset somebody in the section playoffs if the other team doesn't take them seriously.
