Mayo vs Austin
Austin vs Mayo next thursday. What are your thoughts?

I will take Mayo 4-0. Austin has not competed well with anybody in the big 9. There best showing was against JM last week in which they lost 3-0. I personally think JM just didn't play well as they beat them handidly the last time 8-1. Mayo at least competes well and has beaten some big 9 teams (owatonna, east) the only game they were not in is the Century game. Nodak, the statement of upset or not was pretty bold to say the least. You truly are not a Mayo fan are you. This would be a major upset if Austin won this and they would treat it as such. Austin has not won a big 9 game in two years and it took them overtime to do it against East. Austin will make it 3 years in a row of not winning a big 9 game.

Mayo wins 6-1
Austin was putting up a fight as it was 2-1 goin into the 3rd before mayo started to kinda pull away
Derek McMasters made his mayo varsity dabeut and did well scoring a goal and getting an assist
Adam Truex and Adam Heroff also had 2 goals
Ben O'Reilly had one
a pretty good hockey game all around Austin stayed in it and most of there goals game with-in the last 3 mins of the 3rd period

Mayo actually beat Owatonna earlier this season, so I would imagine whoever wins the rematch game a little later in the season will get the higher seed.clutterbuck22 wrote:At least Mayo will finish in the middle of the pack for the Big 9. Mayo 6-1 over Austin. The game even though 2-1 going into the 3rd period was dominated by Mayo. If mayo had someone you could actually say was a scorer the game would have been 3 or 4 to nothing in the first. The puck for the most part stayed on one side of the ice. Dooley did a great job of keeping them in the game. Dooley would be a really good goalie if he were somewhere else. The score would have been run time if the ref would have been able to see Adam Truex's slap shot go in and bounce right out. It was an extremely hard shot and the ref was behind and out on the boards. He thought it hit the side pipe straight on but it didn't. The former Austin kids did well Mcmaster's had a goal and assist and Sederquest had an assist as well.

McMasters family rivalry on ice
AUSTIN — There were divided loyalties for fans of the McMasters brothers, Adam and Derek, in Thursday night's boys hockey game between the Austin Packers and Rochester Mayo Spartans.
After playing for the Packers last year during his sophomore season, Derek McMasters transferred to Mayo this season to play hockey and baseball. Senior forward Adam McMasters still plays for the Packers.
Both of the McMasters boys helped their respective teams offensively in the Big Nine Conference game at Riverside Arena.
Derek McMasters was playing for the first time on varsity this season and he scored a power play goal in the Spartans win. Adam McMasters had an assist on a goal for the Packers.
"I guess this rivalry within the family is something new," Adam McMasters said. "There's no love lost on the ice, but it's a friendly rivalry."
The power play goal in the second period from Derek McMasters reminded Austin fans of the offensive potential that was lost when he went to Mayo. Although he scored a goal on his return to Riverside Arena, it hasn't been an easy season commuting to Rochester.
"I've known the Austin guys for a long time and they fit right in on our team," Mayo coach Lorne Grosso said. "McMasters started out on the junior varsity this season and didn't look too good early in the season.
"I told him that I heard he was such a great player and he better start doing something. We made him active for the varsity in this game and he did a good job. I've lost a lot of good players to other schools in town over the years, so I was happy to get the guys from Austin."
After the game, there were no hard feelings as the McMasters boys went over to a friend's house in Austin for a post-game pizza party.

Alex Heroff and Adam Truex had big nights offensively for Rochester Mayo and the Spartans picked up their first win of 2010 at Austin on Thursday, 6-1 in a Big Nine Conference boys hockey game.

Mayo (2-4-0 Big Nine, 4-15-0 overall) held a slim 2-1 lead after two periods, but Spartans coach Lorne Grosso shifted defenseman Adam Truex to forward and the senior came through with two goals and an assist. Heroff was equally strong, scoring twice and adding one assist.
"It was close into the third period," Mayo coach Lorne Grosso said. "Truex gave the offense a lift with two goals. It's sure nice to end the long losing streak."
Heroff scored the only goal of the first period, unassisted at the 7:40 mark. Derek McMasters netted the game-winner at 11:40 of the second, a power-play goal assisted by Truex and James Powers. Ben O'Reilly scored in the third, as did Heroff and Truex.
The power play goal from Derek McMasters was almost answered a couple of minutes later by his older brother, Adam McMasters of Austin. The elder McMasters missed an open look in front of the net, but the Packers kept the puck in the zone and got a goal from Codie Miller.

A close game got away from the Austin Packers boys hockey team in the third period on Thursday night at Riverside Arena.
For the first two periods, this Big Nine Conference game was a tight battle between the visiting Rochester Mayo Spartans and the Packers. Mayo then scored four goals in the third period to record a 6-1 win.
The Spartans scored the only goal of the first period. The visitors then committed a pair of late penalties and the home team would be on the power play at the start of the second period.
For the first three minutes of the second period, the Packers were on the power play and at times had a two-man advantage. Their failure to score on the series of power plays became even more frustrating when Derek McMasters, a transfer from Austin, scored for Mayo on the power play.
"We didn't capitalize on our power play chances, but the guys haven't had a lot of work in 5-on-3 situations," Austin coach Tim Peterson said. "We played hard and did pretty well on the penalty kill. There were just way too many defensive breakdowns in the third period."
The power play goal from Derek McMasters was almost answered a couple of minutes later by his older brother, Adam McMasters of the Packers. The elder McMasters missed an open look in front of the net, but the Packers kept the puck in the zone and got a goal from Codie Miller.
Finally, there was some life for the home team and their fans went wild. Miller's goal set off a celebration in the Packers student section. The Austin High pep band was also on hand and they added to the noise as Miller got the home team back in the game.
It would stay a one-goal game for the opening four minutes of the third period. The Spartans then took control with a back-handed goal from Alex Heroff for a 3-1 lead at 4:26 into the final period. This seemed to break the back of the Packers defense.
"We started out all right and the goal from Codie got everybody fired up, but we couldn't keep it going," coach Peterson said. "They got that back-hand goal and it took the wind out of our sails. We made a team that had lost 11 straight games look pretty good."
Mayo snapped its losing streak with a barrage of goals over the final six minutes of the game. Adam Truex scored a pair of goals in the final minutes, and the Spartans also had another power play goal to seal the road win.
"It's been a while, this was our first win of the new year," Mayo coach Lorne Grosso said. "Tim's kids played hard and it was close into the third period. I moved Truex from defense to forward and he gave the offense a lift with two goals. It's sure nice to end the long losing streak."
The Packers offense had managed double-digit shot totals in the first two periods, but the production tailed off in the third period. The Austin boys only mustered eight shots in the final period and there would be no late rally.
