Winona v. Rochester Century 1-7-10
This will be one of the biggest games so far this year for both teams considering they are both contending for the big nine conference and one of the top seeds in section 1AA. This will be a good game to watch and I am wondering what people's thoughts are on this game.

It doesn't look like either team is playing as good as they were a couple of weeks ago; Century was shut out by a decent but average Brainerd team and held on for dear life and needed a terrible call by an official to beat a pretty bad Eastview team while Winona gets beat by Northfield and Monticello last week. Both teams need a win to gain some momentum.
Century has one line and a real good goalie, if Winona can keep the Kautz line off the board they'll win if not I don't think they'll score enough to win. Winona doesn't play either Lakeville school so any shot at a top 3 seed means they need a win Thursday, good luck to both teams.

7:30 at Bud King Arena in Winona
With South pretty much locking up the number 1 seed a win by Winona would be huge for them and a #2 seed, a good showing could even be enough to move them into a #3 seed. Avoiding South until the finals would be great for anyone other than North as in rivalry games you just never know.
So far in the Big Nine only Albert Lea has been able to keep the game out of running time with Century and they did it both times, Winona beat Albert Lea twice so it should be a really good game.

1-0 Winona, Moran from Tice (?) for the Winhawks
The game can be heard on KWNO
1-1 Faupel from Anderson. 10 minutes remaining in the first.
2-1 Sandvik from Hauser and Hemker for the Winhawks with 6:02 left
(sorry if I'm screwing up the names)
2-1 Winona end of 1.
2-2 Martini on the powerplay - I haven't heard Florin's name yet although except for the goalies the announcer generally refers to players as either
Panthers or Winhawks and not by name.
3-2 Century, Rasler on the powerplay from Faupel and Martini. Winona better stay out of the box.
3-2 end of 2, Winona starts the third on the powerplay

Tice just misses on a shorthanded 2 on 0, 7:30 left in the 3rd
4-2 Century, Klughurtz at 10:16
5-2 Cory Kautz at 10:06
5-2 final, sounded like Winona missed Florin, the difference may very well have been special teams as Century picked up a couple of powerplay goals while Winona was shut out on the powerplay.
Interestingly Century beat both North and Winona by 3, if Winona keeps winning the seeding could be interesting as Winona will have a nice record while North plays a schedule that's way above Winona's. Year after year with the one possible exception of Dodge County in 2007 this section rewards wins over strength of schedule.

I lived in Rochester in the mid-80s and was involved with a couple of sports as a ref. I know in talking to coaches and ADs from there that they didn't like having to play the Metro (Missota and Lake) schools in most sports in sections. They seldom, in any sport, give a Lake Conference team the benefit of the doubt when it comes to strength of schedule in seeding.goldy313 wrote:Tice just misses on a shorthanded 2 on 0, 7:30 left in the 3rd

Could not believe the lack of class displayed by the Winhawk students at the game. After the first Winhawk goal the students threw tennis balls on the ice, literally hundreds of them...along with a few fresh fish from the river! They crowded behind the Century goalie chanting all game long. Then to prove how low-class they were, at the end of the game they peppered the Century goalie in the back with tennis balls. Do they not have an AD or teacher to baby sit them?
