Minimum of 35 games for Squirts

Post by ilike2score »

My criteria for a successful youth hockey season for my kids are: number one they have fun, number two they learn the game of hockey, and number three they improve. This criteria can best be met by playing more games. My kids have more fun playing games than going to practice. My kids actually learn the game of hockey better by playing a game of hockey instead of skating around cones, and my kids have improved much more in real life game situations instead of the One on O drill often seen in practice. The 35 game maximum is ridiculous for Squirts. I am a huge advocate for it to be a 35 game minimum for Squirts. Why is there no game limits for PeeWees or Bantams?

Well, Like2score, I hope they enjoy squirts cause peewees wont be fun, it will be frustrating for them if this is truely your hockey philosophy. I agree having fun is importatant but you are crazy if you think you are giving these kids the tools to play hockey once contact starts by playing games. Games at this age aid in implementing what is learned in practice 1on 1's 2on1's and so forth, they also allow the kids to develop imagination and this for me is where alot of people misconstrew learning the game and creativity because they do things you have never seen before. I agree it is cool but could they do the same things under pressure of contact and if they do what position does it put their team in does it hang them out to dry because little johnny was creative without understanding of the when, where and why of his creativity. This is precisely why there is game to practice ratios in place. Pond hockey is fun, but these kids aren't playing pond hockey when they come to the arena. Broken down to its simplest form hockey is exactly what you complain about practice a game of 1 on 1 and 2 on 1 battles. If you teach your kids to win these battles in small areas and in open ice and then take the time to teach them the rules of when, where and why's for creativity chances are you will develop pretty darn good hockey players. Dont get caught up in games = development cause its like anything else in life if you dont do the work you are sure not to get the reward.

Everyone has an opinion on the 35 game rule. Some agree and some disagree. But, a rule is a rule and I think we all understand that. Until those rules change each team is accountable for managing their own schedules. Obviously some teams have run into trouble with their game schedule for one reason or another. I just don't think it was appropriate for you guys to attack these teams and their associations. YeahYeah and HE, since you feel some sort of responsibility to police squirt game schedules, you should just talk to the respective Districts Heads and file your reports and leave the rest of us out of it. I want to hear about Squirt Teams, not what you two friends found on some teams game schedule or calendar.

This thread used to be a really fun read, but the focus has obviously shifted away from the squirt teams we all liked to hear about. I'm bored with this topic!!!

I vote for scrapping this thread all together and starting fresh. OldGoalie85 had good intentions when he started this thread, I don't think this is how he wanted to see it play out!! I'm OUT!!!

Dman Dad...That looks like a fun Tourney!

I like Hermantown vs. Lakeville South to come out of each side.

Lakeville South is on a roll, look for them to win it, however I am pulling for the northern squads in this one!

This brings up a potentially fun thread.....

If a northern team is playing a metro team and you have no ties to either, who do you pull for?

Being from the metro I pull for the Northern team every time. No offense to Metro kids just cheering for the underdog.

I walked in start of 3rd period, I think the score then was cp 1 centennial 0 could be off a tad on this very action packed third period both teams with penalties and lots of scoring cp had a goal disallowed with a couple minutes left. Exciting game.

In Grand Rapids it was Lakeville South pulling out a 4-1 victory in the Championship game. Lakeville had a couple of nice tip-ins in front, and Hermantown didn't bury their chances. It was refreshing to see a well-played CLEAN game by both teams.

Soooo....if Duluth East (Northern Team) were playing Bloomington-Kennedy (Metro Team), you would be pulling for DE because they would be the "underdog"???

Grand Rapids beat Proctor in the third place game, I believe it was 5-1. There weren't semi-finals. There were two 3-team pools - the top seeds in each pool played the championship game, the #2 seeds in each pool played the 3rd place game. Hermantown won their pool games 12-1 and 6-1. Not sure about LS, I think one of their games was 5-2 against Glen Avon.
So who are everybody's Fargo favorites?

Championship predictions? which 2 teams?

Personally would love to see a STMA vs Jefferson rematch.
I have to say I don't think Jefferson will get to the championship unless they get a favorable draw. Defense/goaltending and/or depth will be key to win this thing and I don't believe they have a deep enough team. First 2 lines looked pretty good when I saw them but I think they lacked the depth to take it all.

From what I have seen I think STMA, Wayzata, Stillwater, Lakeville South and Elk River are the best I have seen this year. Just looked at the website and all but Stillwater are up there so I would say one of the other four will take it. I will go out on a limb and say it will be Wayzata and LS (although any of the 4 could win it)!

Interesting enough I thought LS and Stillwater were the best in Edina but neither made it to the finals of that one so it is likely that I am 100% wrong here...it will be fun to see! (FYI ... I haven't seen everyone out there, I have not seen Tonka and they have a good number of supporters out there, I certainly know nothing about the out of metro, out of state or out of country teams...I am sure at least a few of them will come in with a shot to win!)

How many non Minnesota teams have won the Fargo tourney? Has it happened recently?

Trout I would agree with that, other than Elk River. They won't be in Fargo either because of D10 tourney. The draw I think will be a determining factor late in the tourney as this thing is a marathon not a sprint. 5-6 games in 3 days will level the playing ground for better teams with tougher draws with a slightly weaker teams with an easier one. Any bodys tourney come Sunday!
