Holy Angels will get smoked in this match! Too small to hold up to the size and skating skill of SSM! best guess, 7-1 for SSM!

Out of curiosity, with the two AHA games out East and now with Shattuck, do people feel these are "wasted" games, and that they should be playing aganist similar in-state competition, or are the games designed to try and make the team better? Do these three games help or hurt in section seedings?

Goldfishdude,

Your question is quite complex in my opinion. I'll hit on everything I see in there.

1. I think it's great when teams play teams from elsewhere.
a. We can all think that Eden Prairie or Cretin are God's gift to football, but until they play teams outside of the Suburban East or Lake, we really won't know. (The football season is too short, but that's another topic). It is great to see basketball teams play teams from all over to see just how MN compares to other states.
b. I like the 25 game rule, but I think that should be for MSHSL games. If you want to play the women's national team, NDTP, or some team from Turkey, you should be able to. With tournaments and conference sizes, some teams are left with only a handful of games to actually schedule. Non-Kennedy Lake teams have 19 conference games. I would allow a certain number (say 5) of non-MSHSL opponents.

2. I don't get why AHA is the one being looked down on for their schedule. Edina scheduled both Burnsville and AHA. Aside from those two games and Jefferson and Burnsville being in the same conference, common games weren't scheduled. If Marshall beats Virginia in their upcoming game, they should get the #1 seed because they beat their section opponents. But when Holy Angels ties the top team in the section, plays a really tough non-conference schedule and loses to better teams, they somehow suck?

3. Edina is probably the top team in 2AA right now. Well, look at the other three. They have all lost one game to a not-top team. All of the rest of their losses have been to quality teams.
If you just look at common games, Edina crushed Burnsville and tied Holy Angels. Burnsville and Jefferson tied. So, to me, that says that Edina and Holy Angels are ahead of Burnsville and Jefferson. Winner of rubber match gets higher seed. On top of that, Holy Angels took Hill Murray to OT, Burnsville lost to them by 3. Right now I'd get Burnsville the edge because they went to OT with EP and Jefferson lost by 2.

So, in conclusion, no, I don't think playing those games hurts them. I think it helps them prepare for playing different types of opponents. In a fair world with no politics we would simply judge the teams based on games played and results, not opinions of the teams.

As for the game, I agree, the Stars will get handled.

I love the idea of having a few games to play with, that are not MSHSL. Give some teams some options to see different places and or teams. The only problem you run into is you will have state border teams that will play an unbelievable amount of games. Take the Duluth teams. I think there are a couple of Wisconsin schools in their conference. If they play each of them twice for their conference, would that count as a MSHSL game. If not, they could get away with playing 30-40 games by scheduling all of the Wisconsin schools they could and their normal 25 MN schedule. Just some thoughts.

Thanks Watchie... I actually LIKE the idea that AHA is playing these teams, in fact, when it was time for them to go out East, I made posts stating about how excited the kids must be to head out there.

I just was more curious to see if these games were as beneficial as compared to maybe scheduling Roseau, Moorhead, Rapids, etc, to compare/prepare for competition in sections/state.

Do we know if the MSHSL has approved any other trips for the future, or was the AHA grandfathered in?

And greatone, from what I have gathered from a couple coaches is that the season is so short, 25 games is about all that can be handled - most coaches would like 3-1 ratio for practices to games.

Personally, in an era of finances, I would rather see monies used for ice time to generate revenue in terms of games versus used for practices. But, the MSHSL has a reason for why it is the way it is.

I do agree that 25 games is a lot. What I am thinking, though, isn't that there would be that many more, nor would it be mandated. AHA plays two teams out East and Shattuck. Well, I suggest giving them maybe 5 or 6 non-MSHSL games of leeway if they want. So they could play their current schedule plus their section opponents.

Or instead of what I'm suggesting, maybe give them 3-5 extra games on top of the 25 just for section opponents. Just a few thoughts.

From this angle, I doubt it is as beneficial. That being said, there are many more factors involved, including, but not limited to:
-These are high school kids traveling. The parents are [probably] paying, would you prefer to have your parents pay for you visit Roseau or Boston?
-AHA develops many players that will play at the college level. College students travel all over the country to play teams. I'm guessing that traveling this distance plays a different toll on the body than traveling across the state.

Okay, so Shattuck just squeaked by Benilde 4-2 (EN). Shots were 51-18... But that's another story... Does this help AHA's chances?

No one can say...
Two years ago Benilde beat SSM something like 5 - 1 in Mankato then AHA played SSM the next day and was beat 7 -1 at SSM and that AHA team was better than this one. No one knows for sure.
I cannot pick SSM to be my team, but in all honesty the edge is to SSM. I will find out later today.

Everyone's expecting a loss. How would a win help their section seeding?

Rephrase it, they led most of the game.
Excellent game by the STARS. Everyone played great. Jake Erickson is in my opinion number one or two on this team. He plays 100% and never gives up. The Reilly twins are always being picked up which frees him to play away. Labate, Hurley, Smith and Frankie Mork all played great. Tommy Burke in net played great, but a couple of lucky, wet, bounces got by him.
Sections will be fun...

Someone please tell me, why is the ice at SSM so bad? I have heard that their pipes were not placed in the ground properly, but whenever I go there the sheet is more like a lake.....I am kind of picky as I prefer a nice smooth sheet that sets up prior to the drop of the puck.

Zammie?? Regardless, nice showing by your squad. That's a quality moral victory building towards sections. Looks like the consistent play continues.

Z -

If the ice is as bad as u say, you need to going into the consulting biz and work with the area rinks and get them sqaured away.

As for the game, AHA appears to be peaking at the right time.

Edina continues to lose.

B'ville and Jefferson are alos playing well.

Section 2 is anyone's guess, but I'm sticking with the Blaze.

Had my doubts about the odds of the Stars winning this game. Once again, I was proved wrong.

I was at both the Benilde game and AHA game @ Shattuck. I am for MN Hockey all the way, but I'm sorry to say that Shattuck was was far more dominant than the scoreboard showed. The goalies were the key factor in both games and kept the score as close as it was. Also, both Benilde and AHA junior varsity teams were mopped up by the Shattuck U16 team.

Breck also was outshot last year 2:1 but won state. Soccer and hockey are incredible as sports in that you can "dominate" on the field/ice while not being as good in what actually matters...putting the ball/puck in the net...and lose.

You use the JV to say anything about the program? Ha

The U16 team is supposed to be the best team in this class in the country. The size and play by this team would give most high school varsity teams a run. Maybe not beat them, but play well with them.

I agree completely! I think it is great that MSHL teams get a chance to play Shattuck. It is "almost" always a good game. Teams love to try to beat Shattuck and they (MSHL teams) usually play a great game. Sure in the odds of a hockey season Shattuck will lose some, but as the poster stated, Shattuck is by far the better "TEAM" than the high school teams. Fun to watch though.

AHA Level of Play

AHA needs to get the hell out of thier conference level of play to be a powerhouse.

After this year I can honestly say, I AGREE. I am tired of beating up on these teams. It does them no good and AHA will only be able to use the games as practice. But I also understand how this works, and unless the AD's from the other schools will say "let them go" they have to stay.

After Thursday's game against Red Wing, pending an upset, AHA will be close to 150 - 0 against these teams since the new millennium started.

Hockey may be your sport, but as an alum you have to be able to see how good the conference is for them in almost every other sport, very similar to Cretin football in their conference.

While it is unfortunate, it does allow all of their players great development opportunities. Teams with similar schedules like Benilde and Hill Murray have had good success as of late. Not at all saying the current situation is great, but from an athletic stance as a whole, the Missota is a great conference, all around probably one of the most competitive in state.

Do you know why the conference won't allow them to play conference opponents just once?
