What will the final score be when Tartan finishes beating Duluth East today? My guess is 11 to 1 8)

Do we all agree? I certainly don't.

You might have the score correct, however, I sure don't see Duluth East losing this game.

Are you perhaps confusing Duluth East with Duluth Marshall?

Are you including the zero they scored in two games against the Pioneers?

I thought they'd figured out the scoring issue. Dare I even ask what the shots were?

On to sections. Should be an interesting ride, to say the least. If they can't put the puck in the net, it will be a very short postseason no matter who they end up playing. But they've shown they can run with anyone. We'll see which team shows up.

Shots were 41-23 in favor of East. Each team had nine shots in the first, eight shots in the second. East stepped it up, outshooting Tartan 18-5 in the third and 6-1 in OT.

I have been waiting for Tartan's Alex Gierke to steal a big game. He almost did. For us 4AA folk, I have been defending Tartan as a legit #3 seed, and if they beat East a slim chance at #2.

Right now, if Tartan does get the #3 seed, I look for them to beat WBL.

For the East faithful, my favorite northern team has got to be one of the most snake-bitten teams around. I don't know if there is any team in the state right now that gets as many SOG with such little scoring as East does. It seems as though the team scoring percentage is like 5%. One would like about 10%-15%.

Last time I updated the team stats (three games ago), they were scoring on 10.5% of their shots, exactly the same percentage as their opponents. They were outshooting their opponents by a 3:2 margin on the season, so their scoring was the same 3:2 margin. I don't know what the past three games did to those percentages...if I get the chance to update tonight, I will.

Interesting...I'd be curious to see how that compares to past years.

East scoring %; past years

Post by east hockey »

First number is East's scoring %, second is their opponents:

2009-10: 10.6/10.8 (updated through today)
2008-09: 12.0/10.3
2007-08: 10.8/9.7
2006-07: 11.8/7.4 (Ben Leis senior year)
2005-06: 13.1/8.8
2004-05: don't have shot totals
2003-04: don't have shot totals
2002-03: don't have shot totals
2001-02: 12.4/12.4 (incomplete SOG for that season)
2000-01: 13.5/10.0

Just for comparison, in their last two championship seasons:

1994-95: 19.5/11.8
1997-98: 17.4/9.0

Do you normally follow those stats, Lee, or were you thinking like I was? 10.5% is "ok"!!! I used that as a barometer that a goalie's goal is .900 Save %, and .850 is average, so that computes to 15% scoring.

So a 3/2 margin is pretty significant. To outshoot an opponent a margin like 30-20 every game is borderline dominant.

I've (nearly always) collected the stats, but never put them out there in a format such as this so we could see how the seasons compare. More to it than SOG, of course. In their 94-95 season, a ton of those were breakaways and odd-man rushes thanks to the D feeding Spehar, Locker and whoever was lucky enough to be on their line that particular night. Hence the incredibly high scoring percentage. It's of note that, during that season, their opponents scored on a higher % of shots than this year. Doesn't matter when you're being outshot by a 38.0/18.2 margin. Ledingham struggled that season...until the Jefferson game, that is.

Gotta find some way to keep you out of trouble on a Saturday night (says the college kid). :D

Very interesting numbers, though...sure makes you appreciate the scoring ability on those championship teams, and just how good Ben Leis was, too.

Also puts this year's struggles to score into perspective, too, though not in a very positive way.

That's pretty interesting on how unique and/or simple the game of hockey can be - how the scoring % can be so similar to the point that it just goes to show you the more rubber you can put on goal versus the opponents generally means you will win the game.

The margin difference between East in the championship seasons is outlandish.
