Red Wing advances as the 5 seed. They have been very streaky this year. The win today puts them at a 4 game win streak. They have had a 2 game, 5 game, 4 game, and now another 4 game win streak. If they can equal their longest win streak of the year, they will be dancing to the X. I myself will be torn on who to pull for if Lourdes advances. Good to see Coach Nemanich pull off two big wins in the 1A playoffs. Good season by the Falcons, they should return a nice group next year. They will be in the hunt again.

I think with Red Wings record being 500 that some people never thought they were good enough to be in the section final. The tuff sched. prepaired them for the section playoffs. They have gotton better as the year went on. Yes they have had some bumps along the way but all teams have that. Good luck!!!! Go WINGERS!!

I still disagree with you tnt.....Chalk_Talk wrote:I agree, the teams are better, individual talent is down.Rushin11 wrote:I think you are right when you say the talent is down, but i dont believe it is the talent of the teams, but individual players. This section took a hit losing many talented players last year, but from what i have seen from this section the team play seems to be much better. I think the teams have been playing better with what they have, and for some of these teams to even be in the top 20 of LPH's rankings says a lot about how well they are working as a team.tnt wrote:I have seen all these teams in this section play this year, and I can tell you that this section has the least amount of overall talent in it than it has had in the past 5 years, and this years top one or two seeded teams weather it be Lourdes or Faribault would not have even been seeded in the top five of this section say in the last three years, come playoff time, and I am not saying this to be a jerk, its just a the plain simple truth, there are not (overall) the same amount of quality skaters (goal scorers) or net minders as in years past, in the past three years Section 1A had 5 sometimes 6 teams rated by Lets Play Hockey in the top 20 in the state, its not even close this year, and it shows, the quality of play is way down thus the quality level of the teams are way down, this being said does not mean it wont be a good and fun section tournament to watch, it should be very competitive, just not quite the level of talent of teams as in the past three to five previous seasons
You don't have as many skilled players like Voight, Breuer, Walton, Leiverman, Litchfield, Hagers that control a game.
In the section final we have the #5 seed vs the #2 seed. To me it shows depth when you have a 5 seed in the section final. You also had the 6 seed beat the 4 seed and lose a close game to the 2 seed during the last week of the regular season. Any match up between seeds 1-6 would have been a good game.

Top end individual player talent is down, but this sections overall team talent is at an all time high. This section used to get trashed up and down at this time of year. The reason that has stopped (besides 3A and 1AA taking most of the heat) is the depth of the teams and the teams playing tougher schedules. Of the 4 teams that made it to the semi's, 3 were ranked in the top 20 and all of them are teams not dominated by individual talent. Southern MN is developing more solid hockey players and towns like Red Wing, Faribault, New Prague, Albert Lea and Mankato are becoming more known for their hockey than other sports. It is great for the state to have hockey growing south of the cities. Who ever wins the section will represent SO MN very well.

also only twice since 97 have the #1 seeds not made it to the finals:Chalk_Talk wrote:Just looking through the history of this section. Going back all the way through the 1997 season, only twice there have been upsets and the top 4 seads have not made it to the semi's.
In 1997 West beat Roch
In 2004 #5West beat #4 Marshall
'06 #3 East beat #4 Marshall
'10 #2 Lourdes vs #5 Red Wing
and only 3 times has the lower seed beat the higher seed to advance to state:
'04 #2 Albert Lea upset #1 East in OT 5-4
'08 #2 West upset #1 Lourdes 3-1
'09 #3 Lourdes upset #1 Red Wing 3-2

Good info Black Ice...........The upsets you brought up all have happened in the last 6 years. I think this info ties right in with the section being more competitive and not being dominated by a couple of teams or top end individual talent. This section has made some big strides in talent over the last few years, I hope this will continue.........fun to watch!!!!!!Black Ice wrote:also only twice since 97 have the #1 seeds not made it to the finals:Chalk_Talk wrote:Just looking through the history of this section. I wish both teams good luck tonight, I wish I could make to Roch to watch the game.....Players leave it all on the ice, you may not have another chance
