Warriors 2
Prowlers 0

By the sounds of it, great game by the sophomore Andy Foster in between the pipes. Best of luck to the Warriors at the X, and I would assume they will get one of the top 4 seeds as well.
Foster played well, but Thief had very few quality shots. Most hit him in the chest. But he made a few nice saves, and his team fed off of it.

Warroad was in charge from the drop of the puck. TRF looked lethargic most of the game.

i suppose it would be against site rules to discuss specifics on why or why not a player has left a team.
Not trying to beat a dead horse or anything, but I would think that letting the sophomore start the section title game may have played into the senior's decision to leave the team, just my two cents however.

From what I've heard, it involves a curfew violation and his opinion of the resulting discipline.

After the first few shifts in the first, Warroad was all over Thief. Warroad's first goal Gothberg would like to have back. Hebel picked up a loose puck from the top of the circle and whipped it glove side. It was hard to tell if it hit something or he was screened. Shots were something like 9-3 Warroad.

In the second it was a penalty fest. The refs made some interest calls throughout. They let some cheap hits and trips near the goal line go, but called weak holds and slashes. Nelson scored the 2nd goal, which was a killer. If I recall, it was right after a Warroad PP. After a very long shift, Lindquist picked up the puck in the corner and flipped it in the air. Somehow Nelson got his glove on it (an outstanding play), walked in and a defensemen just barely got a stick on it but it was still a very hard shot and it went low glove side. TRF came down a couple minutes later and Soderstrom hit the post and it layed in the crease for about 3 seconds but nobody went to the net to capitalize. From that point on, the second period was a chess match. TRF's PP was AWFUL. They refused to rush the puck and dump and chase. Shots were something like 9-6 Warroad.

The third period was pretty much all TRF, but almost every shot hit Foster in the chest. He played the best he's ever played though. TRF's young third line was fantastic all night and they got TRF some momentum but it was too late. Nelson layed on the ice about 3 or 4 times, which had me scratching my head. I've never seen that from him before. He was cheapshotted a few times and he took advantage by falling down and the refs took notice. The last 2 mintues had TRF guys taking runs and Warroad didn't back down. They missed 3 open nets, which wouldn't of made a difference. Shots 16-8 TRF.

The team with Nelson won. TRF can obviously skate stride for stride with Warroad but they were outcoached. I thought Matt Audette was the best player for TRF, he played a great game. Micah Ranum got better as the game went on, he will be a force next year. Warroad unfortunately are a one-line team, but their 2nd line played decent. Warroad will have to really step their game up to beat Breck, STA/Mahtomedi, or Hermantown.

Both teams will be a bit down next year. Warroad loses Nelson, Hebel and a few other key players like Shaugabay, Storey, and Olson. TRF loses A LOT, including Gothberg, Lindquist, and Malwitz. Sections should be very interesting next year. Crookston should be better, EGF has Aubol and Lawdermilt, PR has one Coburn left, LOW has Lyon. But history tells us in 364 days, it will be another Warroad/TRF final.

Best of luck to Warroad and Roseau at State!

Well that is interesting, and out of left field. Too bad he couldn't keep himself in check during such an important stretch of the season.

As for MNHockey75, that sounds like a pretty good assessment of what went on last night. I wonder too if Nelson was simply trying to draw penalties, as I have not seen him do this before either. Well either way he is fun to watch, and can't wait to see what happens down at the X next weekend as it should be a great weekend of hockey, A and AA!

Yes good assesment of the game, but as for next year TRF only looses 4 seniors who played regularly, but has a huge hole to fill in the net. Right now I would think of EGF and TRF to be the section favorites going into next season, but after that it's wide open to about the 8 seed.

I'm not sure on the line combo, maybe Evan Ose (soph), Brendan Skime (jr), and Logan Kenedy (jr). They have a number of good young forwards and return 5 of 6 defensemen. Their top line should be back with Crosson, Ranum, and Soderstrom although there has been some talk about Crosson moving back to Roseau. Either way TRF should be a strong contender next year if they get some goaltending.

It looked like they were rotating 5 players. 2 seniors, 1 junior, and 2 sophs. Their lineup went something like this.

1st - Soderstrom So-Crosson Jr-Ranum Jr
2nd - Meuiner Jr-Lindquist Sr-Johnson Sr
3rd - Daniels Sr-Skime Jr-Doherty So-Ose So-Thompson Sr

1D - Audette Jr-Forney Fr
2D - Malwitz Sr-Kayser Jr
3D - Erickson Jr-Lansing So

G - Gothberg Sr-Koop Jr

After looking at the returning players, TRF should be good again next year. I watched Koop in JV a couple times, and he looked decent, so that's a plus. Ranum, Crosson, and Audette will be beasts next season.

I've heard from a few people that TRF has a few pretty good Bantam A players including a goalie. It will be interesting to see if any can make the jump straight to varsity, I believe Soderstrom made the jump from bantams to varsity this year. Did anyone else at this game notice Audette make the move to forward with about 7 minutes left in the 3rd?

The game was typical TRF hockey; the puck is a hot potato and a general lack of heart, especially for three complete periods.

In terms of Nelson, he stayed down several times in both regular season TRF/Warroad games, so that is nothing new.

The shots in the game were something like 54-23 TRF so you know.
It was a tough draw that year. They got Hermantown who beat them 9-0 in their previous meeting.
They were up 3-1 mid 2nd period when Mr. Hockey candidate Michael Forney separated his shoulder. Lost 4-3. Hermantown lost in 2 OT to eventual state champion STA. They got third.
TRF beat Orono 2-0 w/o Forney, who were leading the state champs with under a minute to go in the QF's.
Then they played Blake who beat them 10-4 previously. Lost 4-3 w/o Forney.
You can call it whatever you want but TRF had a legitmate chance a title and an injury really hurt their chances. With 4 of the best 5 teams in the state matched up against each other, they began seeding the top 4 the following year.
Warroad is king, everyone knows it. Some people whine and say they should move to AA but with the enrollment, you can expect them too. But TRF has had many top 10 teams over the last 8-9 years. They beat Totino-Grace in '05 who Warroad beat in OT in the state championship game.
Sections are going to tighten up a bit next year without Nelson and Hebel. Any good bantams in Warroad this year? They always seem to one have one or two studs.
