MN Elite Prep Development League (formerly Elite II)

Post by mnhockeyfan0222 »

Big changes within the fall league program as it becomes an affiliate of the Elite League. That along with reducing the number of teams from 11 to 7 will make this program even more competitive that it has been. Tryouts planned for end of July and more info to be posted to their website soon.

Tryout Dates

Post by F14 »

Tryout Dates are Saturday and Sunday July 31st and August 1st.

I do see one major conflict. That is the same weekend as the Dave Petersen Minnesota Advanced Goalie Camp July 29- August 1st for the top 25 goalies 15-16-17 in Blaine.

Do you know if goalies will have a different tryout for the Prep League? Otherwise, this takes a lot of quality goalies out of the tryout process unnecesarrily.

Any idea?

I have been told that a goalie session is being added to the tryout process during the week prior to the weekend tryout so that those with conflict can be evaluated prior to the weekend action. Evaluators will also attend some of the sessions at Blaine to further observe the goalies there.

Last season the Elite II League teams were aligned geographically. Almost by section but not exactly. There's a document on the Web site detailing which tryout to attend based on which high school the player attends. The tryouts were open to upcoming season 10th, 11th and 12th graders and players registered, paid and attended the tryout. Here's a link to the doc from last year,

I believe the Elite League teams are also aligned somewhat geographically with some players moved around to fill out teams.

This is from the Hockey Hub page under Elite D tab:

This season the league will consist of seven MN based teams - Metro SE, Metro NE, Metro NW, Metro SW, West, South and North. Player nominations are being received from high school coaches and members of the Elite League staff. The cost for tryouts will be $50 for the tryout plus $40 for the 2010 - 2011 USA Hockey registration fee. Tryouts will consist of 3 sessions, two on July 31st and a final session on August 1st. Player cuts are allowed after the two Saturday sessions are completed. Players selected to participate in the tryout will receive tryout registration information in the mail or via email during June and July.

I believe that they have totally changed the format from previous years now that they are under the "Elite" program. They reduced the teams (not done by section anymore) and the tryouts are now based on high school coaches and Elite league staff member recommendations (not open tryouts anymore).

Overall, I think the change is going to be good but I did like the open tryout format from past years because it gave everyone a chance to sign up that was interested. Some coaches prefer to not have their players play fall hockey (possible injuries etc.) or are just lazy and may choose to not submit names.

Ask me they really screwed the whole Fall Hockey scene up. Revamp of the Elite 2 will leave many out and the popularity contest will get worse.

MN High School Fall league.

Make 4 Tier 1 teams - North, South, East and West. Top Players no questions. Include the NDak and Wisconsin Teams. Schedule games with USNTP teams and or Major Midget teams

Make 6 Tier 2 teams - Players Tryout - Seniors and Juniors. They Fill in for Tier 1 teams needing players. Includes Ndak and Wisconsin teams. Pick from here to fill U18 NAHL fest.

Make 6-8 Tier 3 teams - Juniors and Sophmores These players fill-in for Tier 2 players and Fill 2 - U16 rosters for the NAHL fest. Use the High School Section assignments as your base, like Elite 2 used to be, make adjustments for Sections with great travel (ie - section 7 teams)

Make the league more about Develoment and Exposure instead of a popularity contest.

Added - Players move up as they go. Sophmores start at the first level but can be moved up during the same Fall league based on thier play. Too many are given a free pass.
