Who's Not Coming Back '10-'11?

Observer - It's too bad your kids jr experience involves sitting around drinking beer in some boring midwest town.
My experience was that most of the guys I played with in the USHL probably had more beers in the their first week of college than we did in 2 years of jr's. At least the team I was with had the most strict rules and were enforced just as hard. 11pm curfew except opening night and new years when you stayed on the ice with fans. Coaches did drive byes to check on players and would even call billets and have the player waken up...sometimes guys would get called at 11 and then again at 11:30. i can't speak for the entire ushl but that was what we had.
Our schedule involved workouts 2-3 days a week in the a.m. and then practice from 9:30 - 11:00. We were required to work Mon - thurs mostly from noon - 4'ish. about 25% of the guys took classes at the local CC and you combine that with a lot of team meetings, booster club events, promotions, and billet family things and you don't have much time to screw off. our team did a lot of things with local schools, hospitals, toys for tots, etc. etc. so that took a chunk of time as well. We had 5 guys in high school so they took a full hs schedule and had mandatory tutoring each week on top of that.
I some how made it out of that drunken debacle and went to college after 27 months off and had another USHL'er in my fr class. He received 1 AB which was like our A-/B+ and went onto get a full ride to the U's dental school. The other Jr player was from the SJHL and went on to graduate from law school with very few grades that were not A's. He played 3 yrs of Jr's. I can personally guarantee not one of us received anything lower than a B in what worked out to 12 total years of undergrad.
Anders Lee will do ok i am sure at Notre Dame, probably just as good as the 18 year old kids. The courses might be a bit tougher than he had at edina so his grades might not be the same. What if he were taking some cakewalk (pun?) at UM-Crookston while maturing like a football player might for big time D1 football? Do you think his maturity and or GPA would be much different? would he sit around having any less beers than Green Bay?

This discussion probably deserves a new topic because it's one that a lot of families are interested in. The families would love to hear real life stories. You don't want your player to give up their dream but you also want them to be realistic about their future. They're not going to get complete honesty from a USHL GM as their job is to fill the roster.
You have zno idea what you are talking about. It is a proven fact that players that have played juniors also have more success in the classroom as they mature and gain some direction prior to entering a college. Als as long as you dont exceed 12 credit hours in a year you are considered a continuing ed student and it has no effect on your eligibility. YOU clearly struggled in the classroom as I am not sure I have seen more un-educated posts. (I played two years).

College sports (NCAA, not NAIA) have a "5-for-4" clock...or at least they used to. You have five years to use your four years of eligibility. There are exceptions - military and religious are common. Medical with an appeal.old goalie85 wrote:Why would they loose eligibility for taking some classes.
From some of the posts it appears you can take light loads and not start the clock rolling...or maybe it starts the five years and you just use your four eligibility years.
Be kind. Rewind.
Observers description sounds more like slapshot than the USHL. GM's aren't just throwing kids out there to fill a roster. They are usually trying to advance in their profession just like the players are trying to advance to college. I am really not sure what you don't like about it. The GM's are trying to get the best players from around the country so their team does well and yes, sells more tickets. In the meantime 15-18 kids off each team get most of or a good portion of their college paid for to play hockey. Most hockey fans think that's a good thing. Look at the college commitments for the USHL and every team is loaded with scholarship recipients.
Look at Lincoln who was the worst team in the league and they are loaded with kids advancing to college hockey. While some are going to big name hockey schools others are going to some D1 schools who might be more well known for their academics; RIT, USMA, Princeton, and Notre Dame to name a few.

No rules like that that I know of... just school transfer rules. Odds are, if they moved out of town to play junior hockey, they probably switched schools... which would keep them from transferring back.woodley wrote:Can someone enlighten me. . . .if a kid leaves his high school team to play on a junior team and subsequently gets cut, does he have eligibility to return to his high school team? I thought I'd read that if you play "in-season" with a junior team you lost the eligibility for that year.
Anyone?
A lot of players have driven out of town for the weekend to play regular season USHL games, yet still came back to play the entire HS season. Justin Holl played four games for Omaha before the HS season last year.
You can add Junior Defenseman Brandon Parker from Faribault High School to your list, he will be playing at Russell Stover AAA U18 this season with the boys from Century. The Exiled One wrote:Rochester Century loses three.Code: Select all

It looks like Jake Horton (a junior from Tartan) is playing with the Janesville Jets (NAHL) this year.
Here is the link showing the Jet's roster:

At 29 players, that appears to be a preliminary roster, which would usually cause me to hold off adding him to the list. However, seeing as he's not in the Elite League, the Elite Prep Development League, or with the Blades or any other AAA program... it's probably very likely he's with Janesville. Thanks for the heads up, I'll add him to the list.Go-Wild! wrote:It looks like Jake Horton (a junior from Tartan) is playing with the Janesville Jets (NAHL) this year.

I've never seen a defection like this. 7 kids chose to leave for Tier 1 programs. The kid from Lakeville really surprises me considering the competition he'll face in their current conference. Are we sure about him? I thought he was NTDP. I wonder why these kids would choose Tier 1 instead of juniors. The Exiled One wrote:Rochester Century loses three.Code: Select all

I believe Zach Adams and Darrin Lapic from New Prague are both going to Russell Stover alsoStillAnEagle wrote:I've never seen a defection like this. 7 kids chose to leave for Tier 1 programs. I saw his name on their roster, but it's not there anymore. Here is a cache version that proves I'm not crazy. I guess we'll have to see where he ends up.StillAnEagle wrote:The kid from Lakeville really surprises me considering the competition he'll face in their current conference. Are we sure about him? Where does a AAA player in Kansas City go to play now that Russell Stover is importing Minnesotans to play on the team, and take spots, from the Kansas City players? Is Russell Stover leadership really doing the right thing? Gotta be some unhappyness there.
Are kids going to Tier 1 or Juniors as 11th and 12th graders to get the game count up and hope to get into a D1 or D3 program as a true freshman? Or, are they still likely to have to play 2-3 years of juniors and want to get a jump on those 2-3 years by playing one or two while they still have Minnesota High School eligiblity? I know every situation is a little different but I find these to very interesting choices by these Minnesota players and families. Some aren't even Final 54 for their age in Minnesota. Seems like quite the crap shoot. Let's hear some real reasons?
