Broken Link above, but ...
Hats off to the Icemen organization in only year 2 of this tournament. Check out ALL of the online results at http://icemen.pucksystems.com/page/show ... -standings. There is not another tournament in North America, in-season OR out that delivers this level of up to date results AND stats. Just amazing.
Only complaint is the need for a little quality control on teams as some of the scores are pretty lopsided. Perhaps an Invite and Open level.
Other than that, First Class all the way. Congratulations to all !!!

Re: Broken Link above, but ...
There are plenty of tournaments that offer this kind of stats online. Alot of them offer the stats as the game is in progress. I do agree that it is nice. It makes the tournaments that don't do it look bad! When you pay the kind of money you do to enter these tournaments its nice to have all the stats available at a click of a button.icedad wrote:Hats off to the Icemen organization in only year 2 of this tournament. I agree that it is too bad that teams can't be more balanced. It would make for a totally different tournament.

It is really nice to see the results and stats in almost real time. Only a few local tourneys are doing that now. Getting the games on local tv/internet is also a really nice touch.
However, the comments about the poor quality of many games is right on the money. Lopsided games could deter the stronger and weaker programs from taking part in the future and hurt the growth of what looks to be a great event. The suggestion to have open/invite levels will address part of the problem. The next step, and tougher part, is finding a way to attract more high end teams.

No affiliation with the Icemen, but they have put together a really nice tournament, complete with the website, which is a great touch. The open/invite situation needs to be addressed but that will most likely come with time. With so many teams in each level, no reason not to have an invite and open event. Also, it is a bit odd that there are no 3rd place games. Not sure the reason, but just a little strange since almost every other tournament this summer has had a 3rd place game. Well done, though, for all those involved. For various reasons, this tournament has FLOWN past the local one that was held a couple of weeks ago, in terms of attracting teams and how they handle the dissemination of information about every aspect of the event.

This tournament appears to have grown in size a great deal from the already well attended tournament last year, and that was no doubt a very pleasant development for the tournament organizers. Let's face it, even with some lopsided scores, this was a pretty amazing tournament for a 2nd year event. There were more teams from Wisconsin, more high end local teams (Blades at more levels, Machine at all levels in addition to Icemen, LSS), Canadian team(s) also... At the 98 level alone there was a fourth pool compared to three pools last year. I suspect there will be an invite division next year to accommodate the growth and I think it will draw more high end teams.
It looked like some of the teams that were in the tournament this year that ended up on the short end of a lopsided score, were also in it last year with similar results. They must not have minded, perhaps because the tournament was so well run and really just seemed like a great atmoshpere. The website was outstanding and the televised/internet games were quite the top-end touch.

98 Machine
97 Blades
Tourney thoughts...Top two teams at alll levels should save the entry fee and set up games between themselves throughout the year.(Knowing the egos involved the top this will never happen) At least at these three levels there were no close games until the final games. I understand that having those teams in the tourney might help it grow but until they get confirmation from other elite teams it is not fun for the teams that blow out teams or the team that is getting blown out. Once again the reason that Machine and Blades have to travel to play.
Overall the tourney was ran well. on another note the director should think of keeping age levels at the same rink instead of shuttling all over the city for two games in a day.

Re: Caribou Classic
Maybe it was refreshing for those parents to have a tourney close to home, save a couple grand, and sleep in their own beds. Yes, they were successful, but didn't everyone expect them to be? The 98 Machine had pool play scores of 5-0, 5-2, 7-1, 17-0; I wouldn't think that, as a parent or coach, I would have considered it a waste of time to take a couple hours off of work for that. Rather than seeing the top two teams leave the tourney, maybe, as the tourney matures, we'll see less of the bottom two teams. The 17-0 game was against a club that struggled and suffered lopsided defeat at many levels - live and learn. Would the 98 kids from the Legacy and Edge like to win a tourney? Sure. Would they, and their coaches and parents, like to play against the best teams and players in the state? Absolutely. Is it good for Minnesota hockey (with a small "h")? I certainly think so.dogeatdog1 wrote:99 MachineWrister wrote:Who won the Championship in the 99 and 98 brackets?

Agreed, there are always going to be some blowouts in tourneys, typically in the pool play portion. However, the number of uncompetitive games in the Caribou seemed higher than most top tournaments. Hopefully, the tournament organizers recognize that an issue exists. By the way, rumors are that the Winnipeg Subway tournament is moving to a three-tiered format with Super Elite, Elite, and Open (AAA) due to complaints about lopsided games.My_Kid_Loves_Hockey wrote:Here is the link to the Subway North American in Winnipeg, considered to be one of the top tournaments.

Agree, there are ALWAYS different levels/tiers even within the same classification. In addition to the Subway scores : Compuware finished an unblemished 6-0 in the 12 an under National Championship, outscored its opponents 44-10. NFL is supposed to be about parity but the Lions went 0-18 in 2008. Sure the scores can get too lopsided but there needs to be opportunity for bubble teams to compete with the upper echelon.My_Kid_Loves_Hockey wrote:Here is the link to the Subway North American in Winnipeg, considered to be one of the top tournaments.

I agree with this. Also, while 17-0 is a bit extreme, some lopsided scores like 8-1, 6-0, 10-3 etc... are alot more competitive than the scores would indicate. Especially at younger age levels. Sometimes the disparity is game to game. Sometimes one team has just as good of talent but have only played together for a week and haven't gelled yet whiel the opponent has played together for a long time and it's tough to know what the outcome will be because the talent is equal but the team is not so to speak. How can a buble team know it's place until it's faced the best it's capable of.silentbutdeadly3139 wrote:Agree, there are ALWAYS different levels/tiers even within the same classification.
