Sounds like there are commitments of some top Juniors in the Class of 2012. Will post this thread as a place holder. Appears Women's is following Men's with earlier commitments taking place.

Is there a thread with opinions of top players, or players to watch in this class yet? I thought there was but haven't seen it in some time.

Congrats to Hannah and her family. She is a top notch player, a gifted student, and a wonderful young lady. It has been a pleasure to watch her play through youth and high school. Best of luck, Hannah Banana!

Agreed - one many young players should pick as a role model.
1) Great player with tremendous creative mind, great hands and willing to put the puck on others stick
2) Unmatched love of the game - she watches studies the game like few male or female do - learns and applies - probably no one has worked to tune thier game as much as she has - scary to think what she will be after 2 More years of HS at Hill Murray
3) Despite her talent real great kid who is a friend to all
4) Great student

Glad to see her get her chance to shine on national stage with USA U18 team and the chance to stay at home and play for the U of M.

Just on the topic of a trend towards earlier commitments:

Warroad's Lisa Marvin commits to UND
Brad Elliott Schlossman - 08/17/2010

Call it an early 16th birthday present for Lisa Marvin. The standout forward from Warroad, Minn., achieved a longtime dream last week by accepting an offer to play women’s college hockey at UND. Marvin, 15 years old at the time and 16 today, is the youngest player ever to commit to the Sioux women and may be the youngest to ever commit to any NCAA women’s hockey program. She is between her freshman and sophomore years of high school. “I grew up with North Dakota in my family,” Marvin said. “It was a dream to go there. They liked me, so I thought why would I look at other schools if I knew where I wanted to go?” The UND connections run deep for Marvin. Her grandfather, Cal, was one of the founders of UND hockey in the 1940s. Her father, David, played for UND from 1987-91. And her sister, Layla, has verbally committed to UND for the 2011-12 season. “I liked playing with my sister in high school and didn’t see a reason to change it for college,” Lisa said. Derrick Comstock, who has coached in the Warroad girls program for 11 years, says UND is getting a special player. Lisa tallied 23 goals, 51 assists and 74 points in 29 games as a freshman. She was the third-leading scorer on the state-champion Warriors team. “She has a real head for the game — stuff you can’t coach,” Comstock said. “She has a knack of knowing where to be both offensively and defensively. She’s one of the smarter players I’ve been around, especially at such a young age. “Her and Layla also have been nothing but respectful. If you tell them something, it’s “yes, coach.” The other kids see that. They are good leaders.” Lisa is the fourth current Warroad player to commit to a Division I program. Layla and goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie, both of whom will be seniors, are headed to UND next fall. Forward Karley Sylvester, also a senior-to-be, will be going to Wisconsin.

Not much doubt as to which team will be favored to go all the way in 1A this year!

Now that some of those commitments have come to light...I have to agree, the WOW factor is definitely justified. Great job by Frost and staff on picking up all these fantastic players from their own backyard.

Could someone explain to me why a player (parent) would verbally commit to a program 18 months before they can sign a letter of intent that binds the school too?

If the player is a top player and wants to go to that school and the coach wants them why not? This is an option to only a few very top players - like the 3 USA U18 if they want to stay at home and the U wants them go for it. You can count how many spots and positions a school needs - once they are gone that school is closed - some schools don't recruit hard - they want players to want to go there - commiting is the ultimate act.

If you watch the Men's side this is a growing trend with 14-15 year olds. The women programs are now following suit pursuing earlier. This is a competitive process that can carry stress - amazing to see the pressure that come off girls once they have make a decision. Look at the rate of verbal commits over the last three years it has really commited for incoming Seniors and is now driving down to Juniors and Sophmores. Interesting to see must of these early early commits are MN versus CDN or out East.

I agree it is a competitive process. The trend that is occurring on the men's side is that average players are making a verbal commitment to go to a school and as a result are limiting their options. Have you noticed that the USHL & NAHL have hundreds of players committed to division I schools for the coming years? It’s been a long time since I've been through it but I don't think that many jobs are open. It has become a one-way street that benefits only the school. Nobody talks about the kids that committed 3 years ago to the school and find themselves playing for a division III college as a 21 year old freshman.

I also agree that if the player is consensus top 3 player in the state and they have already decided where they will attend...it may be a distraction getting calls and letters from the other schools. I personally think the more competitive the process, the more you want to keep the only leverage you have as a player....the ability to choose any school you want.

This applies to even the top players. If the University of MN has 3 scholarships available for the coming year and the top six players coming out have all committed to go there 18 months ago. As a coach, I would bring all six in on half-rides and let them play it out for a year to see who gets bumped. But if one of those players is sitting on a full ride offers from Ohio State and Syracuse then maybe I only bring in 5 players and offer that player a full-ride to get her in. I’m just advocating keeping their options open. I assume they still allow 3 formal visits to the schools….the players today must have changed if they don’t like getting flown in for a weekend of recruiting.

University of North Dakota
Sam LaShomb.....D..........So. St. Paul HS........So. St. Paul, MN (I think?)

So this is the 4th top Jr. to commit in this 2012 class & there is one 2013 commitment from a sophmore.

Clearly a new trend as recruitment commitments are up for early summer commitments beofre senior year and now moving to younger classes.

Sam LaShomb is an outstanding player with a great attitude and work ethic. She had an outstanding summer playing with the Ice Cats. She will be a strong player for North Dakota.
Best of luck Sam!

Can the 2013 commit be mentioned by name (or school) or is that frowned upon?

Has anybody seen anything new from this group? Say, for instance, in the latest Let's Play Hockey?

Just an update from the corresponding USCHO recruit thread.

Sorry, I didn't spend the time to cull the list to Minnesota kids only. Loads of Minnesota talent in this class yet to commit. It's very early of course.

From the Girls Hockey Hub:

Sam Hanson from WBL verbally commits to UND.

Congratulations to Sam, her parents and grandparents (who very rarely miss a game). Sam is a great player and an equally great kid. I know your defensive partner is going to miss playing with you next year. Best of luck to you, Sam!

Interesting that there seems to be a run on MN Jr. (2012) D players. That makes 4 (Stecklein, McMillian, LaShomb and Hanson) that have verbally committed. I wonder if this "run" will result in colleges rushing to get commitments from more Jr. D. In the Sr class (2011) 10+ D have committed so if the numbers are similar for the Juniors then almost 1/2 of the Jr D have already committed well before July 5, 2011 (which I believe is the date in which coaches can start calling 2012 recruits).

A player has their mind made up...why not make a verbal commitment? Consider this...weekly calls, letters, e-mails from college coaches and players from schools not even on their radar? They can set all the questions aside...commit and then then turn their attention to school and hockey! Rather than having their school choice weigh on their mind. I was recruited and at first it was an incredible feeling but then it became a hassle. If these players are good enough to commit now....they are good enough to have a lot of info coming at them from all sorts of different directions! Focus on what / where you are interested and the be done with it! Take a load off your mind!
