I like what the Wildcats do and in my opinion they are what the league is all about. Why? The Ice Hawks are good every year. However, they have a team made up of a bunch of 89s and 90s...kids that are going to age out of juniors playing Tier 3. The Wildcats only have one 89 and a hand full of 90s.
The Wildcats are about developing young players while the Ice Hawks are about winning with old guys. In my opinion, the MJHL should be used for development...to each their own, I guess.

We're here. We're there. We're everywhere.
Re: Minnesota Wildcats-Love them or hate them?
ok im going to be honest and say i came from the wildcats this year. if you are considering it, i would not recommend it. why? at the very beginning of the year there were 35 players including practice players, at the end of the year there were 16 left. almost 20 people either traded away or quit, and as far as i know only 4 others went to different teams and 3 went back to highschool. of those who went to different teams, 3 of them are still tier 3, and one went up to the manitoba junior league but from what i hear he got traded from that team to a lower end team in the league and is the #3 goalie there. look at the wildcats first year as a team, they only had one player move up to tier 2 hockey and that was league mvp seth ronsberg who played in the league for 4 years, so what i am trying to say is the wildcats dont develop or move players up, and the reason they will never have any last year players is because they leave before that time comes or they dont want to end their career there. but if your still a high school player and just want some ice time before and after the highschool season go ahead, i just dont want anyone to end their young career there like 13 players did this season. i believe the wildcats just give false hopeslapshot445 wrote:I have heard people praise them for their ability to develop, and I've heard people criticize them a rediculous amount for failing to win. haha wow doesn't sound like much of a 'development focused program'. Did they even cut kids out of try-outs?
I just recently spoke to one of the players this year and he told me basically what you just said. He says that the only guy they have advanced is that ronsberg guy, but apparently he's unbelievable and he really shouldn't have been in this league even last year. this player had nothing but absolutely horrible, horrible things to say about the wildcats. he said it was the worst experience of his life (and plus he payed about 5 grand for that horrible experience). It sounds like they have done nothing but actually damage players' chances of making a better hockey team. dont get me wrong they have the right idea in taking young players and developing them, and not focusing on winning. but right now they are doing the exact opposite of that. from what i've heard it would be catastrophic for your hockey career to play for the wildcats.
ya ronsberg is one of the best rookies in his league. ya its pretty much a joke and everybody wasted moneyhammer99 wrote:I just recently spoke to one of the players this year and he told me basically what you just said. Developement & Moving Players Up?
I am not suggesting that I know this program all that well, however the two lists below do not look so bad for a team with a losing record. Frankly, it looks much better than those that win.
Take a look.
2009 - 2010 Minnesota Wildcats ALUMNI
James Buttermore, Aberdeen JR A Tier II (NAHL)
Cameron Carns, Winkler Flyer JR A Tier II (Manitoba)
Michael Deslauries, Winnipeg Saints JR A Tier II (Manitoba)
2008 - 2009 Minnesota Wildcats Alumni
Jake Parenteau, University of MN (WCHA D1)
Gino Villella, Gustavus- Adolphus (MIAC)
Mitch Smith, St. Mary's (MIAC)
Travis Raser, Iowa State (ACHA)
Seth Ronsberg, Winkler Flyers (Tier II Jr)
Derek Budde, UM-Duluth (ACHA)
Aaron Iverson, St. Cloud State (ACHA)
Jeff DeVere, Metro State - Denver (ACHA)
Justin Brausen, Saint John's (MIAC)
Zac Reneau, Salem State (DIII)

Well to start.... Jake Parenteau NEVER played 1 game for the Minnesota Wildcats. He played for the St. Paul Lakers. Why this team is claiming to have advanced him is beyond me. 2nd. Buttermore and Carns have both been cut already, so thats not an advancement.
This team is a joke and a stain on a league that is actually pretty good. I wish the league would force them to win 10 games this year or else be booted from it.

The league needs to move more of the local high school kids that are playing in it. Get them to the next level then others will take notice and get involved. The local kids are doing well in the league leading thier teams, compared to the out-staters that are ready to age out.
Buttermore and Carns are playing for the Winkler Flyers in the Manitoba league which is compareable to NAHL, maybe a step up with all of the new teams added to NAHL.
Wildcats are taking credit as most of the team was Lakers players and Coaches when it started.

Carns has already been cut from the flyers, so carns and deslauriers are the only advancements from last season, neither are in the nahl. Both also played very few games for the wildcats.
Wildcats shouldn't take credit for the lakers' doing. If they are taking credit for parenteau, I'm sure they are taking credit for more lakers players. I honestly dont think the wildcats have sent anyone to d3 schools. Also, I find it funny that the wildcats consider ACHA an advancement league. All of the other teams in the league dont put ACHA players in their advancement list, but the wildcats do to make their advancement list not look as pathetic as it is.

this is funny......typical post by hidden promoters of the league
trying to obscure the facts
Gino Villella, Gustavus- Adolphus (MIAC)....never played
Justin Brausen ????what??? show me where he is even on a roster let alone playing. I could go on ,but I've made my point..I'm sure I'll be attacked as always by the same posters that always do but never substantiate anything from their end, so a little support from others who are observing what I am would be greatl appreciated

Wildcats aren't the only team to claim that guys in the ACHA have been "moved up". NAHL teams even make that claim, the IceHawks are pretty good at it also. ACHA has a place for college guys if they want to keep playing and some teams are pretty good. It's just not what most kids playing Jrs are looking for.
Not trying to start a battle with you but, Did the name ST Paul Lakers move kids on or was it the Coaching staff that helped get the word out? The coaching staff and most of the Lakers at the time moved to Maple Grove, thats all I was stating. Should the Lakers have asteriks under the players they moved on or should the coaches?

Depending on the team, ACHA hockey is very competetive and bash me all you want for this...but can be better than Mnjhl hockey at times. Iowa State has a D1 and a D3 club team in the ACHA which their top team draws numerous NAHL players, and many other teams do as well. It's not big time hockey like players want to get to, but it is very competetive and a good place to play and continue school.
Coaches at this level come and go every year. Yes a player is being recruited by the COACH but... the organization is really what the kids are looking at. Paranteau played 1 full season for the St. Paul Lakers. Ronsberg could have been fired half way but Jake would have kept playing on that team. The organization gets credit for the advancement, not the coach.
If the coach wants to take credit and put it on a resume he should but... the wildcats advancement list is not where this kid belongs.
