MnJHL 2010 Power Rankings
So far who do you think are the top teams? The worst teams? Figured we could actually talk some current hockey here...
Here's what I think from what has happened so far.
Rochester 3-0
Owls 3-0
Lakers 4-2
Granite City 3-1
Hudson 2-2
Little Falls 1-1
Twin Cities 1-4-1
Maple Grove 0-6
I'm still confident that the Lakers will drop. They have 3 wins against Twin Cities-2 and Maple Grove-1. Hudson improved this weekend after blowing 2 leads last weekend. Rochester looks dominating and the Owls seem to have good goaltending and defense. Twin Cities needs players to stay competitive and Maple Grove is bad again.

My rankings from what I've seen:
1.Ice Hawks-Absolutely dominant, appear to be clear and cut the best team in the league.
2.Lumberjacks- Some impressive wins so far. One of the few teams that could challenge Rochester.
3.Owls- Appeared to be nervous first game against the cats, looked much bettter this weekend.
4.Lakers- Have taken advantage of a rather easy schedule so far. However, I wasn't impressed with their 8-2 loss to the Ice hawks in Edina.
5.Northern Lights- Much better than their record shows. Outplayed Hudson and Little falls in games that they ended up losing.
6.Hudson- Not as good as I expected. Defense doesn't look good at all. Their vets have been able to carry them to a couple wins so far, but I dont know how long they can keep it up.
7.Flying Aces- So far haven't played well at all. However, they have a lot of skill, and skill means potential. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a run later in the season.
8.Wildcats- Better than last year... but not good enough to compete. It will take a while to make this team into a contendor.

I've got:
1) Ice Hawks - they're studs and will dominate again
2) Lakers/Lumberjacks - this weekend showed that these teams are pretty equal...for now.
4) Owls - Still not sold on them, their wins were against average teams, but they are 3-0.
5) Hudson - Good goaltending, and decent offense, but I agree with mnh, they're D could use some help.
6) Lights/Aces - Lights have really stayed in most of their games till late, and they'll win some games. Haven't seen much out of the aces, but again, they'll win some games and surprise some people.
8) Wildcats - Feel sorry for them. They've made progress but it seems like everyone else has too.

I would like to make a few changes...
1.Ice hawks
2.lumberjacks/owls/lakers
5.Aces/Lights/Crusaders
8.Wildcats
Wow!!!! this is going to be a fun season, 6 teams with almost identical talent levels. If anything I would just clump those 6 teams together in the middle And leave the Ice Hawks at the top and the cats' at the bottom. Even the Wildcats have the potential to make a run if they get hot. I already can't wait for playoffs!!!

How did they react?
6-3 ripping of the Lights.
The Lights are good but very dirty and they chirp A TON. I bet they lead the league in PIM's and lost fights this year!
Lumberjacks, Aces and Hawks are the top 3.
Lights are 4
Lakers and Owls
Hudson
Mildcats are bad...they may not win a game this year...which is only 2 less then than won last year. Yeah I know they had 4 wins but 2 by Default because Good Ol Wes from the Lakeshow last year played players not on the roster.

Penalty leaders by team
The Lights do not lead the league in penalty minutes, as suggested above.

not sure I would call the game a ripping of the lights. Lights outplayed the hawks for two periods and were leading 3-2 going into the 3rd. If the ref would have gotten the lights' third period goal call right, it would have been a much different game. the puck actually went into the net and bounced out, and the ref called it a no goal.
lights beat the hawks 6-4, then the hawks beat the lights 6-3 (should have at least been 6-4). I would put these two teams right next to each other in terms of ranking right now.

It's got to be tough to win when you're playing over half the game short handed.
The U invented swagger.
short-handed
Actually, you cant really convert those minutes assessed to actual time playing short-handed. Here are some reasons why:
-- Get scored on, and the short-handed time ends short of 2 minutes.
-- Off-setting penalties are in the total but don't create short-handed situation.
-- A team gets a minor but doesn't go short-handed because the other team already is down a man.
-- Penalties near end of game are not served to their fully assessed time.
-- A five-minute major that comes with a game misconduct totals 15 minutes assessed. Obviously that doesn't mean 15 minutes playing short-handed.
-- Overlapping minors to the same team, for example, would allow assessed time to run off at the same time, further reducing actual time short-handed.
It would take some effort, but it would be interesting to know just how much time a team spends short-handed on average.

The Hawks OUT PLAYED THE LIGHTS for all but maybe, maybe 10 mins. The lights shots were soft from the outside and most of them were not legit scoring opps.
I got a chance to watch the 'no goal' at Beetles Bar and Grill, where Coach does a meet a greet along with some film of the past weeks games. The puck hits #15 Tyler Roberg in the back and he limps of the ice and is attended to before he gets to the bench by the trainer. The back of the next was 8 feet behind Tyler!
Excuses, the fact is anyone who watched these two teams play in Rochester knows that the Lights were out played in the game they won 6-4. Shots in the last 10 mins of that game were 14-2 for the Hawks and the Lights scored on one of their 2 shots! The Hawks played with no goaltender for the last 1:45 and the lights only cleared the zone twice. Hawks hit 3 posts and scored a goal in the 1:45.
The better team is the Hawks...by FAR!
AND I SAID I wouldn't be shocked if the Light led the league in PIM's minus the Wildcats...they still have 35 more games to get there.
From what I saw the Lights play up and down night to night, and the goon crap they pull will keep them from being a contender.

Actually I was at the game and the lights' outplayed the hawks' in the first two periods (this is coming from a very unbiased source).
Also, yes the missed call in the 3rd period was a goal. Ref was out of position and clearly missed the call. I would know, I was right behind the net when it happened.
Crash, where do you get this attitude that no one can compete with the hawks'? Lights lost the first meeting 5-1 but they were playing with 13 players. They have picked up about 10 solid players since then, and are now able to easily compete with the hawks'.
While it is true I would rank rochester ahead of the lights' in terms of power rankings, the lights' are very close behind. They proved it by outplaying the hawks' in rochester, and giving them their first loss.

OMG you really need to get a grip if you think these teams are that close. They play 7 times this season.
If the Lights win 3 of the 7 I will admit you are right.
If the Lights finish less then 15 pts behind the Hawks I will admit you are right.
Hawks won 5-1 shots were 17-40 Hawks
Lights won 6-4 shots were 25-33 Hawks
Hawks won 6-3 shots were 32-45 Hawks 8-18 Hawks in the Second ALONE!
How do you out play a team and be outshot by 10?

Do you really think that a game can be summarized by shots? In case you dont know a shot can range from a breakaway goal to an icing that goes on goal. You can't judge a game based solely on shots. Also, are goaltenders not part of a team as well? If the lights goaltender keeps them in the game and the lights end up with more goals at the end of the game, then THE HAWKS' WERE OUTPLAYED THAT GAME. A team's skill is not only judged by their players', but also their goalies.

i guess you can say that, then, about every team that has ever played.observer wrote:Considering the goal is zero minutes in penalties none of these teams are doing real well at following instructions.
the over-riding point is this: the Lights are middle of the pack in the league when it comes to getting penalties. to say otherwise, is to ignore the numbers, which have no passion in their computation.

Do it all. Penalties per period, Home vs Away, offsetting minors and majors. That is if you want to settle the arguement.
The timing of the penalty is what hurts the most. If you get 3 PP in the first period it take sthe legs away from the other team, gives you a chance to build a lead. Then you start playing looser at the end and the ref gives a couple of calls back to the other team when they are tired and frustrated.

Just want to remind you of this posting about how good the light were.
If the Ice Hawks lose their last 17, thats right 0-17.
And the Lights win the rest of their games.
The Ice Hawks will still finish ahead of the Lights.
When will people learn, Rochester is a NAHL Program playing in the MJHL. The best place to play if you are going to play T-3!
