Girls that quit

Post by dungey »

I am curious how many teams have had girls quit this year that are pretty good? What do you think those reasons might be? I know there are always the ones that school and thier jobs become more important, but what else? I am wondering if the coaches they had were part of their decision? I know our team did....

Yes she decided not to play this year, but no I am not looking to get her name out there there from it. I am just curious if it's something that is common or not and what reasons play a part in the girls decision.

dont think its that common. My daughter is a U12, and some girls give it up around this age because their heart isn't into it. Usually by the high school level the girls playing are highly committed.

Just my opinion

I have coached at every level of girls hockey including 5 years at the varsity. I have always questioned why so many young athletes reach a point in their lives when they are no longer comitted to going to the rink every day and putting in the effort to get better. I have actually found that around age 14, 15 and 16 there are a lot of girls that come to the realization that hockey doesn't fit into their life's plans.

I know some people who think that U-19 B level hockey, like what they have in Edina, is nothing special, but I disagree 100%. If you go watch these athletes, it seems to fit their needs. They practice twice a week instead of 4 times and they usually play one game and not 2. The girls who "quit" varsity programs and do this are frequently good kids who are looking for less time committment than what is demanded at the local high school. In one sense, the U19B program is really what I think more of the high school girls should be doing.

Girls "change" more than boys during this time of their life. The decisions they made when younger, no longer apply to them later on. Sometimes it is a family situation that may alter a young persons decision to take another route.
