Pedrie of Apple Valley
Just curious on how he became eligible to play?
He left in the early fall to go play for the Russel Stover U18 team if I'm not mistaken which would make the transfer rule relevant in his case.

Did he attend a HS in Kansas City? If not, there is nothing to keep him from playing in the MSHSL.longdistancespectator8 wrote:Just curious on how he became eligible to play?

Can't answer your question but there are a few players returning from various early season experiments and all were attending high school. Even Lucia and Everson are transfers from the NTDP high school in Ann Arbor.
Did everone get back in? Some yes and others no? If everyone got a free pass to go do an early season warm-up with juniors, or a Tier 1 AAA team, and then can come back without playing JV for a year we'll see more of it in the future. I'll guess the rules aren't real clear here, with a giant grey area, or who would take the chance of leaving knowing the MSHSL won't let them play when they return.
Anyone get their request denied? All I'm hearing about is players being allowed to return and play varsity which isn't how the rule is written. I'd feel bad for someone getting their request denied just because they didn't play the game, know the loopholes, know how to play their hand, as other families may have.

Are you sure about this? My understanding is that they simply joined the team for the games but attended their local high school classes during the week.observer wrote:Can't answer your question but there are a few players returning from various early season experiments and all were attending high school. I'm assuming those that are "back" with their school team took online courses while they were away. Online courses (in most cases) are technically through the student's home district... so in essence, they never left and are therefore still eligible in their home district.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
It's all small stuff.

No. I'm less interested in the Lucia and Everson story as is everyone else. Maybe they just made arrangements with their Wayzata and Edina teachers. Fine. Are you sure about this?
What people are interested in, and sharing of information would be helpful for those families, is how about the others. Right now it's a big grey area secret. Seems like some get it their way and others don't. Being away from September 1 until now is almost two months. Either they attended school or they're quite a bit behind now. I presume they attended school because having a 16-17 year old just sitting in some other town and not attending school seems unlikely.
The MSHSL is in a tough spot as this sport is more screwed up than any other. There should be clear criteria otherwise it's unfair.
It doesn't matter if they played juniors/AAA or NTDP. They can leave and attend any other school they want while they do that. As long as they return and attend school in the district they live in, they are eligible to play right away.observer wrote:No. I'm less interested in the Lucia and Everson story as is everyone else. The way I understand it, in theory, a kid like Ben Marshall could transfer back to Mahtomedi in January and play the last half of the season and playoffs, although i'm sure there is a date rosters have to be set by.

According to the MSHSL transfer rules, if you switch schools, that is a transfer. The rules are pretty clear and they are not making exceptions, other than the ones that are already in place.DubCHAGuy wrote:It doesn't matter if they played juniors/AAA or NTDP. Using your Marshall example, his family residency with mom, dad, brother is in Mahtomedi, but he attends high school in Omaha. If he transfers from his high school in Omaha back to Mahtomedi and his family does not change where they live he would be considered in-eligible for all varsity sports at Mahtomedi for 1 year.
I also heard that Lucia, Everson, Sit and Rau where still taking classes at thier schools and just commuting to play games in the USHL, which if true, they never left thier high school.
Not sure on the Pedrie situation. I know he was at AV in the fall playing in the elite league. There where rummors early on that he was going to leave to play for his dad at Russel Stover. Heard he was confronted by the SE coaches about the rummor, but he denied it. Then a couples of weeks later, he left to go play hockey for his dad at Russel Stover. Now I hear he is back at AV.

Because he transferred schools. His legal gaurdians did not move to KC last year. They have been and continue to reside in the Owatonna school district.keepyourheadup wrote:then why is Wagoner ineligible at owatonna?
I guess the transfer rules don't confuse me all that much. They generally do what their supposed to do, which is to keep MSHSL players from becoming veritable free agents (similar to the NCAA). The only real way to get around the rule is by physically moving to another school district, which is a completely insane tactic to employ at the youth level. And hockey parents, of course, are all completely sane.

I would say it's pretty safe to assume based on the evidence available.keepyourheadup wrote:Thanks for the clarification, is it safe to assume that the AV kid never attended school in KC then. If what you've said is true, and I have no reason to doubt you, then he likely didn't enroll while he played for stover and is thus able to play.
