St Thomas (0-0) @ Duluth Marshall (2-1) 12-4-10 3pm

Post by HShockeywatcher »

In the last five years this private school rivalry has turned into a big one, which started with St Thomas beating Duluth Marshall for the 2006 STAte Championship, with the Hilltoppers leading the series 3-2-1 since that game, including an even goal margin, each team with 19 since meeting in the 2006 finale.

I would give Duluth Marshall the edge in this game as they are 1-0-1 in Mars Arena against St Thomas (both were STA's first game of the year) in the last 5 years and have played 3 games thus far this season while St Thomas has played none.

Looking forward to a great game.

I would love to see a Hilltopper win here. Could be one of the only class A teams to have a chance at a defeat of STA.

and the fact that Marshall usually has St. Thomas's number in the regular season...

Past Results (lines seperate seasons)
2005 State Third Place Game: Marshall 3 St. Thomas 1
------------------------------------
2006 State Championship: St. Thomas 4 Marshall 3
------------------------------------
2006 Regular Season at Mars Arena: Marshall 4 St. Thomas 4
2007 State Semi-Final: Marshall 3 St. Thomas 2 OT
------------------------------------
2007 Regular Season at St. Thomas: Marshall 8 St. Thomas 2 (no typo)
2008 State Championship: St. Thomas 5 Marshall 1
------------------------------------
2008 Regular Season at Mars Arena: Marshall 2 St. Thomas 1
------------------------------------
2009 Regular Season at St. Thomas: St. Thomas 5 Marshall 1

This means the series is:
DM leads 4-3-1
This may shock people since St. Thomas has won the high profile State Championship games but DM leads the series.

In Duluth, DM leads 1-0-1
In Mendota Heights, it is tied 1-1

In the regular season, DM leads 2-1-1
At state, it is tied 2-2
In State Championships, St. Thomas leads 2-0
Outside of State Championships, DM leads 4-1-1

What's amazing is that these two teams played FOUR straight years at state. Talk about a rivalry.

Numbers side,
I say St. Thomas wins 3-1

Before the Hill Murray game, I would've even said I thought Marshall would probably win this one with how the past two in Mars have gone, but seeing as how the Hilltoppers lost 0-8 to the Pioneers in Mars, I don't have the same feeling.

STA 5-2. They shouldn't lose to a class A opponent all year.
