Score from Friday, December 17th:

Moorhead Black-3
Woodbury-1

The first period went fast. It was a cleanly skated with no penalties and no scores. The action was fairly balanced, up and down, between two evenly matched teams.

The second period got a little messier. It started with three penalties, two to Moorhead. But neither team could score on the power play. As the period wound down, the bigger Moorhead wings began to break down the Woodbury defense. Finally one the Black’s wings broke through getting his big stick on a puck slid between two Predator defensemen. He pulled himself through the defense, righted himself, and put the puck into the net.

Before Woodbury could re-group, the Black attacked again. They pressured the Woodbury goal and scored on a rebound with the Black forward falling as he shot the puck past the Predator goalie. Down 2-0, a Woodbury forward who was injured in the second period left the game at the start of the third period.

The Predators adjusted their lines and pressured the Black defense, finally scoring on a rebound two minutes into the third period. Unfortunately for Woodbury, a minute later,a big Moorhead forward turned the corner on the Predator defense, skated to the top of the slot and fired the puck. It glanced off the goalie’s glove upward into the net to make the score 3-1.

The loss of their wing started to wear on Woodbury as the period progressed and they adjusted their lines. The Predators had moments where they put extreme pressure on the Black defense, but just couldn’t find the right combination to score. Moorhead has a good strong team with size and definitely will be a threat to make the state out of the North Region. Woodbury continues to struggle.

Cent-3
Way-1

Wayzata looked horrible. Centennial looked big/fast/good. Should be better than ranking?

Scores from Saturday, December 18:

Rosemount-6
Roseville-3

Roseville got hammered two weeks ago by Farmington. Rosemount beat Farmington a week later in Duluth 5-2. That was a puzzle. Roseville has played well this year and they are playing the best hockey in D2 at this time. It turned out to be an interesting game to see. The Raiders needed to show they were a better team. They did.

But the Raiders were stunned in the first 20 seconds. Rosemount scored off a rush from the opening center ice faceoff on a nifty tip-in off a nice pass play from the corner. The Irish made it look easy and the Raiders became tentative and spent most of the first period dumping the puck as the Irish continued to attack using their neat passing style.

Rosemount added a second goal halfway through the period on a flubbed shot. An Irish forward ended up with the puck five feet from the goal and fired. He caught the edge of the puck and instead of being a hard shot it slid slowly along the ice through an open 5-hole. It was the first of three change of pace goals the Irish scored.

Rosemount added three goals in the second period. The first came a minute into the period on a rebound shot. Roseville finally scored at the two minute mark on a nice back hand that went top shelf. The second period ended with the Raiders down 5-1.

The Raiders finally started skating in the third period. Their overall speed went up a notch and they became more aggressive. It resulted in one quick goal, another top shelf goal off a nice passing play. Rosemount scored on a rare penalty shot called when a Raider defenseman fell on the puck in the Raider’s crease. Again, the shot was flubbed slightly. The off-speed puck caught the goalie’s glove and bounced in. Roseville ended the scoring off a melee in front of the Rosemount goal to end the scoring.

It is hard for a good peewee A team like Rosemount to win every game especially playing a team that can compete, like Roseville. If these two teams meet again this season, it will again be a very interesting to watch.

Scores from Sunday, December 18:

Farmington-6
Eagan-0

Farmington continues to impress with their overall game play. They bottled up the Wildcats in their own zone for most of the game. During the 12 minute second period, by my count, the Eagan goalie had to make 23 stops out of 25 shots, most of the 25 shots were point blank within five feet of the crease.

Lakeville North-3
Lakeville South-2

In a well attended (around 500 fans) game at Ames Arena, the two rivals went at each other in tough skating game. The winning goal was scored with less then a minute to go in the game on a shot by a North defenseman that had pinched down into the slot and picked up a rebound.

Very good game. PL had more shots, STMA had more quality opportunities.

I wish the refs would have let them play, 8 penalties I think vs STMA and 4 for PL on a lot of touch plays - PL also scored on a questionable penalty shot. PL parents said that the refs call the games like squirt games and we saw that tonight both ways.

But take nothing away from the game, very good up and down. STMA goalie also played very well.

I'm an STMA dad and I wish we could play that type of team every district game. Looking forward to seeing Burnsville and Farmington coming up.

Burnsville the best team [pee-wee] that we have seen this year. Did not play them this week-end but watched them. Good luck.

B'ville went up north and got to see how they play it up there. Fast and physical. They adjusted very well and came away with the ship at the Star of the North tourny. This team is for real. They are deep and can wear the opponents down.
