Albert Lea and Faribault play as well tomorrow otherwise not very much going on
One that I'm looking forward to is Lourdes vs. New Ulm. Top 1A team vs. Top 3A team, typically 3A is the inferior section but New Ulm looks like a solid squad this season, won the Kiwanis tournament by beating Eau Claire, which Lourdes lost to in the semis

Been a good number of weeks since my last post on the "early rankings". I think it's time to start up the late season rankings with many teams entering their last hand full of games or a little more left.
Late Season Rankings
1. Rochester Lourdes Eagles (16-2-0): Really how can't I rank the Eagles first in the section? They are 6-0-0 within the section with Faribault going on tonight left. Barring a Lourdes loss, Lourdes has the #1 seed in the section hands down.
Funk, Samuelson, Vesel have been their typical self, but Farrell and Nicolay have been contributing to some of the scoring as well. Heimer has been looking good all season behind that Vesel-led defense.
A pair of 5-1 wins over Delano and New Ulm has shown that they are legitimate. Earlier this season they have not played consistent good hockey despite their undefeated streak, they have needed to squeak by teams during that streak. Now the Eagles are starting to win more convincingly, let's see if they can keep it up vs. some top Class A teams.
Next Game: Faribault Falcons at Faribault Ice Arena, game in progress
2. Mankato West Scarlets (13-5-2): The Scarlets of Mankato West are the real deal this season and showed they can compete with anyone with a tie 3-3 vs. Prior Lake. An overtime lost to New Prague (5-4) and a lost to Lourdes (3-2) are their only two losses in the section.
Rantanen, Weber and Frentz has provided a lot of the scoring, but the Scarlets' depth has been coming as the season progressed. Their top scoring line from last season (Brown, Resner and Olsen) is coming back into form at the right time. Kaufman has been playing exceptionally well behind a defense that I once questioned in the beginning of the season.
The Scarlets have been streaky this season if they come out of the regular season hot, consider them a huge threat come section time.
Next Game: Rochester Mayo Tuesday Feb. 1 at Graham Arena
3. Albert Lea Tigers (13-6-0): When you talk about Albert Lea you have to start with the guy behind the bench, Roy Nystrom. If history tells us anything Nystrom has his teams playing the best late in the section, and they might not have as much talent as other teams, but their work ethic is unquestionable. Despite talent of many teams, any team in the section will need to out work the Tigers in order to win
Carlson is unquestionably the Tigers' number one guy, scrappy and dangerous in the PK, he leds the Tigers with 27g, 18a and 45 p. Hacker and Stolt are also names of worth mentioning. Griffin Wangen is getting a majority of the starts and has had a better season since his slow start.
The Tigers have won 4 straight since their lost to Mankato West. Two of those wins include Red Wing and Faribault, huge for their placement at number three right now.
Next Game: Rochester Mayo Spartans at Albert Lea, game in progress
4. New Prague Trojans (9-8-1): If you remember my last rankings, the Trojans were number seven in my rankings with a 1-4 record. The Trojans have been able to come back to respectability and then some more by posting a .500 record with their win over Chaska (5-0).
Curt Bezina is the only Trojan with 10 goals or more. Many goal scorers with three, four, five goals shows some depth on this squad. Zach Adams has stepped up the point production being one of their top defensemen. Joe Morris showed last year that he is dangerous when he's hot.
New Prague lost to Hermantown 2-0 a respectable score to one Class A's top teams. Their Missota schedule jumps in with Northfield and Red Wing still left to play. New Prague is the only team in the section to play Lourdes twice. They lost both times (3-0) and (3-1) respectfully.
Next Game: Shakopee Sabres at New Prague Community Center on Tuesday Feb. 1st
5. Red Wing Wingers (6-13-0): Don't let the record fool you the Wingers are a good team. The tough schedule that left them winless til early January has made this team a scary one to face. Their lost to New Prague 4-1 puts them at 5, but they have been playing good teams close and are competing every game now.
Stegora and Renzansoff lead the team in points with 18 points and 12 point. Amendolar had a rough start with some of the top teams in the state, but with a Missota schedule underway has shown much improvement.
They've played AHA and Mahtomedi pretty close despite the losses (8-5) and (2-1). Wins over Northfield (3-1), Farmington (4-2) and Fergus Falls (3-1) are impressive. Personally if I'm a top team in the section, I do not want to play the Wingers, upset special looks like something possible on their menu come section time.
Next Game: Chaska Hawks Tuesday Feb. 1st at Prairie Island Arena, Red Wing
6. Faribault Falcons (6-11-1): Have they fallen off the map? They were a preseason top seed for myself, and now their outside the top five. Their head to head win vs. Northfield is what keeps them from falling anymore.
Lipinski is still a great player for the Falcons. Though Helegeson is leading the team in points with 26. Teske is a pretty good defensemen with some point production with 18 points this season. Their goalie situation has been a mess all season. Forgaard is back for the Falcons and stability in net will do wonders for them to start patching things up before section time.
Win over Northfield (4-2), lost to Mankato West (6-3), lost to New Prague (5-1), lost to Albert Lea (5-2), I think I have them in the right place at 6. They would need a win over Breck or Lourdes to consider a move up these rankings.
Next Game: Rochester Lourdes at Faribault Ice Arena, game in progress
7. Northfield Raiders (6-11-0): An up and down season for the Raiders this season, but their only win within the section was vs. Red Wing in middle December.
Andrew Scofield is a known dangerous player on the Raiders squad and is the only player with 10 or more goals (12 currently). Michael Vogel is close by with 9 goals for the Raiders. Isaak Tjaden has pretty much taken the starting job in Northfield and thus has added some good stability behind net for the Raiders.
The Raiders need key players to play well like they did in the beginning of the season. Beating Holy Family Catholic and Red Wing were good "resume" wins, but their consistency is definitely in doubt after losing (2-1) to a Chaska team that has struggled this season as well.
Next Game: Chanhassen Storm Tuesday Feburary 1st at Victoria Rec. Center
Bottom Five: With all due respect.
8. Wascea
9. LS-H/SP
10. La Crescent
11. Austin
12. Mankato East
- Mankato East is in a rebuilding phase losing an overwhelming amount of their goal scoring from last season's graduating class. Any team losing that much would have the same troubles. They are the only team winless within the section and that is why their last.
- I've had the chance to see Austin play today and they have improved considerably to last season. Despite their record and margin of lost, the product that Austin is putting out is much better than the past couple of years.
- La Crescent had some promise in the beginning, but a lost to Austin knocks them off despite the win over LS-H/SP. La Crescent's schedule is a hard thing to rank because most teams are out of state.
- Wascea is the only team with a winning record out of the bottom five with a 9-5-0. They beat Mankato East, Austin. Their lost (5-1) to LS-H/SP is what edged them out of the nine seed for me.
- LS-H/SP has one hell of a goaltender in Amsden. He's posting a .910 SV% facing close to the most shots in the state. Despite the quality of puck or quality of teams he plays, he's a bright star on that Bulldog's squad. The Bulldogs have pulled together a 6-9-1 record, but their wins over other teams like Wascea are what recover them from their lost to La Crescent.
The bottom five are definitely the hardest part of the section to rank. All teams seemingly have beaten each other so rankings were hard to figure. Add the fact that La Crescent plays little Minnesota competition makes things more difficult to an already confusing equation.

New Pragues section loses
Lourdes (2x)
AL
West section loses
Lourdes
NP
AL section loses
Lourdes
MW
The seedings are still wide open. One thing that I think could really hurt West is that they don't play Red Wing. The Red Wing coach will have seen and lost to both NP and AL. I think he is going to have a tought time putting West above both those teams without playing them, I could be wrong. In the futurte I hope that West can remove the nonconference/nonsection games, Waconia, Shakopee, Prior Lake. They could add Red Wing, and maybe play Roch, Northfield, NP or another section team twice. It would really help come seeding time.

I think there's year term agreements to playing certain teams for non conference games. In the past Red Wing's coach did not want to schedule a game with West with what I am aware of, not sure about the details under that subject. Red Wing recently got a new coach in Belislie? (I think that's how you spell it) so maybe new scheduling agreements can be formed now.Scarlet Great Info, I think you about right on......At this point I think seeds 2 through 4 are interchangable.

I'm sure coaches will discuss and plead their cases for what they believe seems fit. No question some coaches might try to skew the seedings so they can match up teams against each other, I'm sure it's been done before (happens in other sports) but I don't think West will be too discredited for not playing Red Wing this season given they play the rest of the section at least once except for La Crescent.
Scarlet ...Yes Great info, again...thank you
The bottom will be a crapshoot...
L-H/SP is playing well as of late:
Win against Waseca 5-1, East 4-0
Losses Minneapolis 6-2, LaCrescent 4-1
Big game with Austin approaching, will help with seeding
LaCrescent is inconsistant:
Win against Winona 6-3, L-H/SP 4-1
Tie against Minneapolis 3-3
Loss Austin 4-2 (en)
Freind was at the Austin game said LaC really out played them badly, had a few injuries, which probably hurt a small program
Waseca also inconsistant, but nice record:
Win over Austin 4-3
Losses to L-H/SP 5-1, Albert Lea 10-2
Austin looked like they were turning the corner, but have slipped:
Win over LaCrescent 4-2 (en), East 4-0
Losses everybody else.
Looks like some big games ahead for Waseca, L-H/SP and LaCrescent...that should unfold your bottom 5

Not nearly as much as their game together on tuesday. The winner of Tuesday's game is likely the 2 seed, with the loser likely the 3 seed.Chalk_Talk wrote:does the West 3-3 tie with Mayo hurt them for seedings?
Al just beat Mayo 6-2
I think the 1 and 4 seeds are locked in with Lourdes at 1 and New Prague at 4.
Red Wing is likely the five seed IMO.

Gopher...Would you please give more info on why you think the seedings are locked in the way you see them?? There are two computer ranking systems that have NP as the second team in the section(pagestat)..I understand that they are only computer rankings, but you can make very strong arguements for each team to be #2. Next tues will clear things up.GopherPuck15 wrote:Not nearly as much as their game together on tuesday. I think the seedings are still somewhat undecided. Look at a team's overall record, section record, and head to head results when comparing.
I'd expect the #2-4 seeds in 1A to be West, Albert Lea, and NP, but in which order? NP beat West in OT to open the season, West beat AL, and AL beat New Prague. Each played Lourdes, and none could get a win against the Eagles. Hopefully the last few games will clear things up.

While New Prague has played the toughest schedule, they only have ten wins. looking at their remaining schedule, they should finish 4-1, best case scenario they're 5-0, and they finish 14-10-1, or 15-9-1. Losing to Albert Lea is the killer for them. Their win over West was the first game for both teams, and was also West's first time in any sort of game action whatsoever. Albert Lea beat NP, so with a similar record, the coaches, who are the key here, because you will have some coaches trying to set up the bracket the way they want, and some honestly ranking teams, will give the nod to Albert Lea over New Prague. West gets the 2 or 3 simply because they beat Albert Lea midseason, who beat NP once the season started it's routine of games. Regardless, I think that a 2-4 seed will find a way to win the section. It's my gut feeling somebody is going to knock off the Eagles, as they are vulnerable to some of the teams in this section. I think Lourdes' dominance over Section 1A will start again next year, with those two sophomores with another summer to get even better, as well as the rest of the team learning to step up their game and take it to the next level. It's going to be a fun two weeks here leading up to the Section tournament! I'm definitely looking forward to it!

it is tough for a coach to minipulate the seeding. Each coach ranks all the teams
minus their team. Once all the coaches submit, the highest and lowest ranking for each team is then throwen out.

Last Week's Game of the Week had to be Red Wing vs. New Prague.
A very good inner-Missota match up with some section implications. Maybe a little debate over whether New Prague holds on to a 4 seed or possibly better with a rising Wingers team coming up to the Community Center. Joe Morris was able to hold them to one hold and the Trojans continue to roll. New Prague seems to be peaking at the end of this season, will be interesting to see if they can carry it onto the section.
Game of the Week (Feb 7-12)
Albert Lea Tigers (14-6-0) vs. Mankato West Scarlets (13-5-3)
I've looked over all the schedules from Missota, Big 9 and Lourdes, being alone in the Independent, there is no bigger match up this week for Section 1A than Big 9 Matchup Mankato West vs. Albert Lea. There's a possible Big 9 Conference title at sake, a possible number two seed in the section and of course if you don't know about it Albert Lea has never lost on home ice to the Scarlets as long as the West program started. (Might have to check with Ken Essay for that one)
Albert Lea has maybe played some inspired hockey after their 6-5 lost to the Scarlets, as the Tigers have won five straight since their lost on January 13th and maybe the hottest team in the section. Mankato West on the other hand since the last meeting with Albert Lea has gone 3-1-2 in their last 6 games. All wins by Mankato West were shutouts led by senior Jake Kaufman.
The tie to Mayo has lost West's chance to outright win the Big 9 Title. This game is a must-win for West in order to have a chance to be the lone-champion in the Big 9. (Sharing is still a possibly) Mankato West will have to win on traditionally bad ice for the Scarlets as in school history West has never won at the Albert Lea City Arena.
Key for Albert Lea in this game is gonna be staying out of the box. The Tigers have been in the box more than any team in Section 1A (104 times on the PK) and their PK has needed to bail them out far too many times. West's powerplay will knock the Tigers out if given enough chances with top goal scorer Rantanen and captain Weber on the Powerplay Unit.
Key for Mankato West is simple, play a full 52 minute game. The Tigers is a dangerous team always and you should never count them out of a game. Carlson is a scoring threat even on the PK and Nystrom knows how to coach a team when their down. The Scarlets have the talent, but the Tigers will never quit working. I don't think the Scarlets have put together a full three periods quite yet, but we've seen sparks of it excellence in a couple of periods this season.

See what you are saying now that I look closer at their (Breck's) season.
Was assuming that would be considered a quality win over a perennially tough opponent. Looked at their #3 ranking in the Class A poll and their being at the top of the Tri Metro.
Like you say, tho, looking at their results, they (Breck) have played a couple powerhouses, and lost to them. Still think Lourdes is the top team in 1A, tho.

Breck IMO is rated much too high for the team they are this year. Not to say they could not make a run through sections to state, but this is not last years Breck team. I would agree without question Lourdes is top team in 1A. It would take an upset to beat them in sections but thats why they play the games.Edger wrote:See what you are saying now that I look closer at their (Breck's) season.
