What's interesting is that in the bid for MN Hockey Day the organizers bid required a "Artificial Surface" with chiller.....Moorhead obviously doesn't have it.
At the other end of today's ice issues was the HDM event at Baudette Bay in 2008. About negative 30 on the thermometer with a negative 45 wind chill (no soft ice anywhere near). I do know the young men skating will NEVER forget playing in that one

Guys limping off to the bench and falling numerous times because of soft or chipped ice. Seems to me, flip side was slower skating and less checking. So, I'm not sure which is safer outdoors or indoors? Definately took longer time wise.
As I said in the other thread, lets enjoy some of the awesome arenas we have in this state now. Have a double header at either the Hibbing Memorial Arena or Amsoil Arena.
Should have kept the game in baudette. Couldnt be a better location. The parking lot in moorhead doesnt have the same feel as the bay, underneath the giant walleye, and on the Canadian border.

it was super bad..unsafe, horrible hockey and no ice in some regions..a disaster for the state to play in that..
and no the kids on elite teams do not like to play in those conditions..they are forced to and they know its garbage...
but they were sportsman like taking care of each other on both teams by avoiding the needless extra physical stuff..they knew this was rotton and they just had to smile and pretend it was special..but it was not.
A better idea might be sending our good teams to Eveleth every year. If you want history then you'll have it. There's a pretty good reasons why games are indoors now, barring a rink at TCF and a true hockey day where the Gophers and Wild also play I think this needs to end.

Of course. It's a big part of the experience, but it gets to a point where it is dangerous for the players.
It gets to a point if you are compromising the intent of the game. Move the Hockey Day date back. There isn't enough $$$ involved to have internal coolers for the ice.

The old school part is nice, but the games could be so much better if they didn't have to deal with the unpredictable ice / weather. IMO, would be nice to try moving around to some of the nice rinks in State. BREC in Bemidji, Amsoil in Duluth, Marriucci, etc. Either way it a great day !
