In the 1995 Section 1 Playoffs. New Ulm rightfully recieved the #1 seed in the section. They got a first round bye and then played Mankato West who they had beat twice already that year by a combined score of something like 28-3. They beat them less than 2 weeks before in Mankato 18-1. Then come the 2nd rd of sections and MW has one of their players contract menengites and pass away. Even though this was a very tough loss to all the team, it really seem to rally them. MW goes into New Ulm, who is ranked 3rd in the state at the time with a 20-3 record, and bet them 2-1.
To me, that was one of the biggest chokes of all time.

The biggest upset in the history of MN high school hockey. First ever 9th seed to defeat a 1 seed. Everyone loves a good Cinderella story. Go Eagles!

All this talk of upsets is getting me worried about my State pick.

Chances Como takes down Hill on Saturday?

Bingo. 1999: Wayzata, the 1 seed in 6AA, promptly bowed out to Chaska in the quarterfinals.

I believe it was 1991, maybe 1992, when MV came into Aldrich and downed a highly touted Bears team led by Brian Bonin. I was 5, and remember it to this day....

Little Falls did not play a great game, but they didn't play terrible. Their passes lacked crispness, but credit a spirited Apollo team for creating some of that lack of crispness. Apollo played a very solid game and their goalie stood on his head. He made some amazing saves last night and stopped nearly 50 shots.

Warning to other teams in 6A: Don't take this team lightly.

This has to be one of the most tightly grouped sections in the state. Apollo, the 9th seed, beat Alex, the 5th seed, 3-1 and lost 3-4 this season.

If they they beat Alex, they will play the winner of Wilmar/Sartell. Earlier in the season, they tied Wilmar and lost to Sartell by 6, but recently lost to Wilmar by 1 and Sartell by 2. The odds of them pulling 4 upsets in a row is probably not very high, but I also wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibilities. This would continue a great story for a school that is typically not great at sports.

Good luck Eagles!

Didn't a highly touted #1 seed Eveleth team get beat in the quarters in the late 90's after a deep run at state the previous year? Need a "Ranger" to help me out. Either way congrats to Apollo. Seems like a program that has gone through a lot lately.

Oh I think the odds are better than many people think, if the Eagles played how they did last night against Alex, its gonna be a shot at history come the section final cause its gonna be the Eagles shot at history and I believe their gonna do whatever they can to win.

Well, heck... they have to be the only team that is coached to "do whatever they can to win"... lets pencil them into the Class A Championship while we're at it.

While beating Little Falls makes this team's season a success, at least I have to believe that....I'm not sure how many people actually thought Morris-Benson would win their game, though technically it was an upset. A win over Alexandria seems far more probable than one over Little Falls being Alex hasn't exactly had an awesome year. 4 wins in a row in their section tournement doesn't bug me as much as who they'll have to play in the finals. Sartell hasn't won a section championship, and it's a long time coming for Willmar. I was going to cheer for Willmar if FF bowed out, now I may go for Apollo.

Its hard not to cheer for Apollo after last night. It would be nice to see a cross town game to decide who goes to state.
