WOW Pioneer press, that is ridiculous, if you're gonna go with a pioneer (which we knew you all would) Go with Ben Bahe, he is a much better choice than Shaughnessy.

It's rather remarkable that a player who didn't make the list of Mr. Hockey finalists and didn't even make any of Star Tribune's all-metro teams was chosen by the Pioneer Press as the best player in the entire state.

Then again, it makes sense considering the Pioneer Press's excessive and fawning coverage of Hill-Murray hockey.

Agreed. That would have at least been a defensible choice.

SO stpaul in a cense your statement basically says that if you don't go to Hill and play hockey you have no chance of scoring higher then a 29 on your ACT score?

A teammate of my son scored a 35 and he went to a public school. Was offered a full ride to Purdue. How was that possible at a public school?

You see Hill's test scores will be higher as kids have to APPLY to get in, public score has to accept all weather they plan on attending college or not.

Just to be clear, Shaughnessy is a excellent goalie and had a great year and career at Hill. The fact that the Pioneer Press picked him as player of the year is not his fault. Some of the comments here almost imply that he had some sort of control over his selection. He just played the game and did the best he could...the Pioneer Press made the decision to select him player of the year. Congrats to him and all the players who were recognized!!

Well, The Gumper, if you had any knowledge of High School hockey you would know that goalies are up for the Brimsek award, and skaters are up for Mr. Hockey

It was published earlier this year that Kyle Rau has a 4.0. Now it's very possible that he doesn't exactly take the hardest classes on earth but all A's with his hockey schedule is very impressive regardless. This was a year where it is pretty clear who the best overall player in the state was and it's becoming very clear that the PP goes for the "controversial" angle and would never pick the same kid as the Strib. It's not like it really matters though, the Strib's reputation is so much better than the PP that this pick is almost irrelevant.

Shaughnessy had a decent year behind a great team. He is a "pretty good" goalie. Should he have won this? Hell no. But he had no say in the decision (as far as we know). As for Hill being a prestigious academic school? its below average for a private school in minnesota and kids go there to play hockey. Smart kids do well regardless of where they go to school.

you pick someone who most of your readers know and hear about. Everyone knows Hill hockey (love or hate). The selection drums up interest in your paper. Why did they spend so much time covering hill? It obviously sold papers, whether the haters like it or not. While timmy may not be the consensus (or in the running...) he is someone people recognize and know the name.

Actually, I don't think that's true. I couldn't find any selection criteria anywhere in the PiPress, but in most stories about the winner there's no mention of GPA or academics at all. This includes R.J. Anderson (2005), David Fischer (2006), Ben Hanowski (2009), and Nick Bjugstad (2010).

It certainly looks to me like it's a hockey award only, which makes Shaughnessy's selection quite puzzling. He's not on the PiPress's all state team in addition to being left off of the Strib's three all-metro teams and the slate of Mr. Hockey finalists.
