Quick dumb question.

How come Shattuck St. Marys doesn't play in the state tournament? I'm sure the answers obvious but I have been curious for a long time. Thanks.

they openly recruit players and they play a "national schedule" (meaning they play more games then what's allowed by the high school league.)

They do not follow the guidelines of MSHSL for hockey. They play a long schedule, while the maximum number of games allowed is 25. I know they co-op with Faribault for track, so maybe people attending who'd like to play sports other than soccer and hockey can through a co-op, I'm not sure though.

Aside from hockey and soccer, they are part of the mshsl. Most of those teams are dreadful, though.

Through the 80s, and probably before, Shattuck fielded an MSHSL team.

The question first came up in my mind a few years ago when I was looking at Crosbys godly numbers for them.

Because tradition is a big part of the tourney and it's becoming a tradition for Section 1 teams to get blown out on quarterfinal thursday. Having Shattuck play an EP or Minnetonka the last few years would surely end the blowouts.

Shattuck's boys and girls hockey and soccer programs are not members of the MSHSL (MN State High School League), and therefore aren't eligible for MN Hs tourneys.

The MSHSL imposes many restrictions on its member programs--such as maximum number of games, length of season, etc. Educational institutions such as Shattuck, and most true "prep" schools, seeking to also build national level sports programs must function as "independents" in these areas.

What actually would be interesting is to know of how many kids go there to play hockey, but get cut..

Maybe they should field their Midget Prep team, but also have a HS team for those kids that get cut. Have they considered that?

Coming from J-Gold, we usually see one of their teams once a year in a tournament somewhere, I know its not their Tier I because we compete with them.

Shattuck is very frank with its Academy applicants. Prior to enrollment, parents and prospects meet with coaches and admissons staff to thoroughly evaluate where in a program a student may fit, or to determine if Shattuck is the right place for them. Tryouts are held just as they are in other schools. Nothing is guaranteed and assessments are given frequently, so that no one is misled as to their athletic future.

The hockey and soccer programs each offer a number of teams, so most talent can find a challenging level, but, again, your tuition guarantees you nothing (except a great education).

always wondered why shattuck got a large sum of its funding from minnesota when only a few kids from minnesota actually play on the a team, and the rest of the players are from everywhere else but minnesota :/
