puckstopshere
I agree with you assessment of Sartell. I watched them play last Saturday, and they were rough. Passing and puckhandling was very off. It is a really young team with only two seniors. I am predicting a possible state tourney team next year, but this year I just can't see them doing it.

Re: puckstopshere
Sabreman86...which Saturday? If you saw them yesterday, you did see a team that struggled with passing...much like last year's team. But don't doubt them to do good things this year, too. Keep in mind throughout this post we are comparing them to other section 4A teams and not to state tournament titles.....yet...

Good points, in 4a it is possible for them to make a run for it. Any predictions for their opener against SCC?

wow, I know it is just a scrimmage but that is a surprising score. I actually thought that SCC would do better in a scrimmage because they are a pretty deep team, right?

Re: predictions
Sabreman, I'm not a predicting kind of guy, but if I were to opine on what would make this a good, competitive game, I would say Sartell will have to stay out of the penalty box and Cathedral will have to find a way to score. At least that is what preseason play would dictate for both teams. I do think it will be a good contest.

As to SCC's recent scrimmages, like you and others in this thread, I don't believe you can put too much weight in preseason games. If coaches have enough players on their roster, they don't want to show all their cards during scrimmages. On the other hand, I agree with you that it has been surprising for the Crusaders to lose in scrimmages to both Apollo and LF, two teams most followers expected Cathedral to beat handily this year, preseason or not.

section 4
Alright guys, it is obvious that all people on this thread are section 4 fans, as a whole here, lets not put ourselves down too much. Some of you say that "yes possibly a section title in 4a, not a state champion......"
I think that is a load of BS...............remember, in this section is: Alexandria, Fergus Falls, Willmar......yes, yes, Little Falls and Wadena too.............but look at the other three, would anyone be completely out of their minds if FF, ALex or Willmar won or competed for a title???/ no. The reason, all three are well established programs that have what LF and Wadena don't to make them real possibilities to idiots in the state if they are any good year to year..... is this fair??? not at all, but, FF, WIllmar and ALex players play some great teams throughout their careers, Fergus kids always play Roseau and Warroad and moorhead, ALex always plays Moorhead St. Clouds etc...........I guess what all of this mumbling is about is that: its not over till its over, and I think that any team who wins the title out of this section has a good a shot as any team there. One other point, I put section 4 ahead of at least section 1, probably ahead of 6 and maybe ahead of 7, yes 7 in strength............................lets not count anything till its done huh???????????

Re: section 4
No offense old school but i don't see any of these teams albe to beat a team like Breck Marshall Totino or any of the other A powers. These are the kind of teams they would have to beat to win a state championship and i just don't see that happening. I could understand 1 MAYBE 2 wins at the state tourney coming from a team like Alexandria but I don't see any other team in section 4a able to compete in the state tourney at all.

Sorry Oldschool I'll make sure to never ever ever share my opinion on this message board again. I thought that's what this was for but I guess only you or people agreeing with you. Sorry for my mistake.

hockey
Opinions are one thing, but that one bordered on trash talking, give me reasons why none of the teams in this section would ever win a state title.............I think I said enough of why they could.......let's hear it........

Quote:
give me reasons why none of the teams in this section would ever win a state title

Oldschol, could you define "ever" for us? Two years? Five? Ten? One hundred?

Also, about an earlier comment of yours comparing 7A to 4A; there is little evidence, based on prior matchups last season, to suggest 7A is radically better. Only six games were played between the two sections, and it was 5-1 in favor of 7A, or something like that. On the other hand, there is no evidence I see to suggest that 4A is better than 7A, even with Alexandria moving into the section.

One more thing; if Class AA isn't superior to Class A, on the average, then why are teams such as Alex and Greenway opting back down to Class A? For better competition? Remember that Alex was 5-11-1 against Class AA teams last season, and Greenway was 1-12-1. There is every appearance that they moved down in order to be in a better position to compete at a lower level. All I'm saying is that virtually every piece of statistical information we have available points to Class AA having, once again on the average, superior teams to Class A.

I didn't want to take on the "Class Warfare" issue here, but that comment was begging a rebuttal.

For the record, I like the two-class system. Without it, teams such as Hutchinson, Fergus Falls, etc. would have had very little chance of making it to St. Paul in March. I think it's been a very good thing for H.S. hockey in Minnesota.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Re: hockey
He didn't say that they would never be able to win, just not this year (I am assuming that is what he meant). And I agree that no one from this section will win the state championship this year. Not enough talent, numbers, experiance, etc.

Re: superior?
I think it would do well for everyone on this board to stay away from words like "superior" when comparing Class AA to A or vice versa....it's degrading and unnecessary.
We all love the sport and we all should respect the class levels. Everyone can point out a strong AA team that could beat up on an A team and vice versa. The same can be said for individual athletes ... there are those in the A class who are simply stronger, better and more talented that those in AA. Both classes have much to offer to the great state of hockey.
Now, statistically, yes, the larger schools have better records and stats against the smaller schools...but let's not forget one reason why...there are more numbers from which to choose the talent....and I believe that was one of the primary reasons two classes were developed...but I don't recall the word superior or other god-like descriptives being used when developing the two class system.

Re: Oldschool...
I just want to make certain that my posts in this thread have been clear to you. I did not mean to imply that a team from 4A couldn't contend for a state title. My points all along were that this thread was comparing 4A teams to each other and who would be contenders for the section title. In my mind, those are two very different issues.

Games 11/29

That Alex game will be very interesting. It will really show how this section might turn out even though it might be a little early yet being only LF's second game.
I saw Alex dropped their first game to Brainerd last night being outshot something like 45-20.

That really isn't a bad loss to Brainerd, though. I thought they would lose by more, because Brainerd has been looking good so far. I mean losing by two with one of those being an open netter isn't that bad. So far I would still put Alex easily in first place.

If you have a goalie who can keep it close and capitalize on your chances when you get them there aren't too many teams you can't hang around with.
