Is Minnesota State (Mankato) not recruiting girls from Minnesota? I don't see anything listed about them.

Word on the street is another Edina player is heading east....congrats to Suzy and her family! She joins 5 other MN girls including past team mate Corinne Buie at Providence, a team that should be very strong next year.
Congratulations, Suzy. You wanted it and worked hard for it. Best of luck.

No more Foreign born players at taxpayers expense. Mariucci told Bob Johnson to recruit Wisconsin kids for his program when he started out. He didnt and took the easy way. I really appreciate what Brooks and Woog(mariucci guys) had in mind. Mark was a great Wisconsin HS player but not the best ever. My brothers team beat Memorial in 74 by a score of 6-2 for the State title game. My hometown played a Lou Vairo style game. There were about 3 kids on the "other team" that were better than Mark. Bob also kept Mike Eaves off the ice so Mark could win the WCHA scoring title. Mariucci never forgave Badger Bob for taking the "easy'" way out. Minnesota girls should be recruited first and offered athletic scholarships before anyone else . WI girls should go to the Badgers too. Get it??

Nice closed minded approach to college athletics. Your opinion may seem easy to support because you are from Minnesota where there is an abundance of Minnesota grown talent. If we follow your model, programs like North Dakota, Denver, CC, Alsaka Anch., Bowling Green, Notre Dame, even Wisconsin........ just go away. Is that what you want for college hockey? Not to mention all of the other college sports? So we just put a fence around each state and say "OK, see what you can put together for a team". Nice jab at a legendary coach too, I think that Bob Johnson put a team on that ice that gave them the best chance to win. His son just happened to be a great college hockey player - Mike Eaves did just fine for himself, despite having to play for such a poor coach (tongue firmly planted in cheek)

So being a kid who grew up in Madison playing youth hockey with and then HS against Mark Johnson and someone who had a chance to play for Bob Johnso at Wisconin I might comment to you "You obviously don't know your Wisoncon hockey!?"

Bob Johnson mostly recruited kids that MN passed on or who were from Canada, he was a great recruiter and better developer of players and teacher of the game - he recruited and promoted team work. Bob Johnson helped build the game of hockey and rinks across Wisconsin - he traveled and put on many clinics. When I was there '77-81 the Team had about 9 Wisconsin players each year thanks to his missionary work to hold camps, do coaching clinics and build the game in Wisconisn - he did that across the country working with USA Hockey.

Mark Johnson would have been a sophomore when your brother's team beat them in the State Tournament. In 1976 his senior year he almost made the Olympic Team as a HS player. After three years at Wisconsin he held the College scoring record not just for a season over Eaves but for the NCAA. Eaves and Johnson were both outstanding players. Mark led the US Miracle Team in scoring and to a Gold Medal and played over 10 years in the NHL. He wasn't very good - WHAT!!?? He is now doing for the girls game what his Dad did for boys hockey in Wisconsin.

We all better hope the girls/woman's game grows outside of NA if it doesn't it won't continue as an Olympic sport. "No more Foreign born players at taxpayers expense." Many top Women European players (see below only 5) get their college payed for to develop thier hockey skills for the National Teams they compete on so they are not taking a scholarship for some State Schools that allows their recruting budget to actually go further to help US kids.

MN and every other school wanted Amanda Kessel who is one of the top players in the game and although she and her brohter Phil grew up in Madison WI they went to Shattuck and then MN. MN girls HS hockey is probably 10 years ahead of WI HS. The current D1 recruiting class has 40 MN HS players and 0 from WI - here is a break out:

U.S. 84: Minnesota 40; Massachusetts 9; Michigan 6; Illinois 5; California, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Ohio and New York 3 each; Alaska, New Jersey, and Vermont 2 each;
Florida, Maryland, North Carolina,, Pennsylvania, and Vermont 1 each

Canada 42: Ontario 20; Alberta 6; Manitoba, and Quebec 4 each; BC, and Nova Scotia 3 each; New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan 1 each

Czech:1

Denmark:1

Norway: 1

Sweden: 2

Recently heard that long time head coach Jacki Barto is being replaced. Barto has regularly recruited in Minnesota throughout her time at OSU. Interesting to see who her replacement will be and if they maintain their recruiting efforts in the state.

I don't see any Wisconsin towns listed in this thread. Maybe you know something I don't know - which player(s) are you referring to?

That's probably because said individual's listed hometown changed a couple years ago. Guess we'll just have to see where she claims to be from once she's on a collegiate roster?

That is impressive!. Also very nice to see that with this many talented players from Minnesota moving on to division I college hockey careers, that so many programs are actively recruiting in the state. Programs that not too long ago didn't have a recruiting presence in Minnesota. You'd never have that many roster spots available if recruitment of Minnesota players wasn't expanding with more widespread attention from programs in ALL D-I conferences. Great circumstances creating more opportunities for those capable and wanting to play college hockey.

I'd hate to see a point where any D-I caliber players are left without that opportunity due to numbers. To that end...I'd also like to see a few programs adding varsity hockey for the women in the near future.

Looks like the break down of the 44 is a current history high - can't find but there is history somewhere back to 2006. OUt of the class of 44 from MN 16 or 36% are going to the WCHA and 28 out East 64% this is alomost exactly the same ratio of the Class of 2010 which had a big increase of players going East. This does point to more D1 Programs/Coaches actively recruiting MN players which is allowing more girls to play at the D1 level.

From OmAA and Hux on the college board interesting historical perspective:

Typically there are 28-33 Minnesotians on the list come the late signing period. One contributor to there being less at this point when compared to last year is that there were not any '91/'09s on this summer's U18 squad. As we saw in '07, the Minnesotians on the U18 Select team, (9 or 10 if I recall) were all college eligible and were committed come the early signing period.

Additionally, I think that some of the tapering off can be attributed to heavy scouting of the summer and fall tournaments in the East (Chowder Cup, Magog, NAHA, Stoney Creek, Assabet) which see limited participation by players from Minnesota. Also, as has been noted, there seems to be a fair increase in the number of players from full season teams (Canadian included) replacing the Minnesota high school and New England Prep players.

As promised, below is a link to a recent Ontario Blog discussion WRT this subject and posting the detailed numerical breakdown of recent year recuiting classes from that discussion:

http://www.network54.com/Forum/28302...Admissions+etc

The Canadian D1 recruit numbers the last two years were higher percentage wise (40% ) than those in the two years prior to that. This data certainly does not suggest a declining number of Canucks getting into D1. The numbers and details are below. Ontario consistently fields aout 45% of the overall recruit class.

05-06 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 211...129 USA (61%) , 79 CAN (37%) , 3 Int ( 1.5%) Ontario accounts for 46% of the Canadians – MN 27
06-07 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 201...128 USA (64%) , 62 CAN (31%) , 9 Int ( 5%) Ontario accounts for 47% of the Canadians – MN 40
07-08 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 164....95 USA (58%), 65 CAN (40%), 4 Int (2%) Ontario accounts for 44% of the Canadians – MN 28
08-09 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 208...119 USA (57%), 83 CAN (40%) , 6 INt (3%) Ontario accounts for 43% of the Canadians – MN 37
09-10 D1 Recruit Class Totals: 207 USA 113 (54%), CDN 87 (42%) Intl 7 (4%) – MN 32
10-11 D1 Recruits YTD: 158 USA 96 (59%), CDN 61 (40%) INTL 1 (1%) - MN 36

*** Not sure why the overall numbers were lower in 07-08, but the percentages of source were consistent with the other years.

Get it??
Beenaround...i can't believe you're bashing Badger Bob. Even the great Mariucci did what he had to do to compete. Check the birth certificates of some of Mariucci's players like Melynchuck, Burg, Williamson, Pearson and Nanne. They were Canadians. Both Badger Bob and Mariucci were great advocates for the sport of hockey and have done incredible jobs promoting the game on American soil. Come on...think before you type.
