Major announcements from Minnesota-Scores.net

Post by MNHockeyFan »

Click on the link below to read the three announcements just posted on the Minnesota-Scores.net website. Announcement #3 appears to be the biggie - under a new agreement with the MSHSL how teams are seeded for sectional playoffs could change:

it is my understanding that the new 6A football conference that starts next fall will be the first sport / state tournament in Minnesota to follow the seeding by strength vs. traditional section pathway.

I'm glad that they are making this change. It is long overdue and congrats to minnesota-scores & MSHSL for coming to an agreement!

GHS will the new system compare to KRACH? It seems that in the past years that KRACh has been more accurate than the formula that they have at mn-scores.

Then I hope minnesota-scores.net will put more of an emphasis on getting accurate scores going forward. I saw a decent number of incorrect scores reported last year (at least in Girls Hockey). Also, from looking at their website it seems that pretty much anybody can report a score - I'm not sure that practice should be allowed if this could potentially be used for playoff seeding purposes....

Great points! They definitely need to make sure all scores are accurate if these scores are going to be used to seed the teams in sections. It's not at all clear how they are going to do that.

Funny how it went from the MSHSL not wanting anything to do with seeding to now having a website dictate it. I wonder how much money it took to change their minds.

As I understand it the coaches of each sport can decide to use QRF or not. They will have the option to instead continue to seed the teams by voting, just as they've done in the past. So we could have a situation where the coaches in some sports decide to use QRF and the coaches in other sports continue to seed each section by taking a vote. And each sport could be different for the boys vs. the girls. It will be interesting to see which sports adopt the new system, and for those that do how it's received.

This is a decision made by each section, and not just each sport. For example in hockey, one section can choose to use QRF, while another section can choose to vote.

Thanks for the clarification. As the season progresses I would imagine the coaches will be watching the QRF rankings for the teams in their section very closely. I can see where a team's QRF ranking (relative to the other teams in the section) would influence which method a coach would favor.

They may watch to see how it WOULD have gone for them under QRF, but the section seeding method is a pre season decision. QRF may be used to influence their vote, but not to make the determination after the pre season section meeting.

Thanks again, it makes sense to take the vote before the season starts. It will be interesting to see which method the various sections choose.

Makes total sense now as to time of selection. I hope coaches condiser it - but I would bet most won't change and adopt this approach.

Does anybody know if any Girls Hockey sections elected to use QRF as the playoff seeding method for 2011-12?

If so, then I sure hope the powers-that-be can figure out a better way of getting the scores entered correctly on Minnesota-Scores.net. It's only three days into the season and I believe I already see an incorrect score (Tartan/Bloomington Kennedy score from Saturday was reversed - it appears that Kennedy won 4-2 based on the Hockey Hub box score). This also negatively impacts the KRACH rankings....

It looks like somebody just fixed the winning team & score for this game on Minnesota-Scores.net. But I am still curious if anybody knows the answer to my question above. I can't seem to find this info on the MSHSL website. It would be nice if they published this info for every sport & section. Apparently this determination is made prior to the applicable season.

In the case of the fall sports, most of the sections didn't decide until about a month into the season what method they were going to use to seed. Of course, the QRF announcement came right when practice started. That said, I'd be surprised if very many sections used QRF. Most sections have used coaches voting for years, and I'm sure they'll continue to do so. Still, it will be interesting to see how different the QRF and coaches voting actually are.
