Schwans Cup
Anyone know who is playing in this?
It's not the Best players, it's the Right players! HB
I see WBL is not playing in it this year...
Sager always said, "if we aren't in the Gold Division, then we won't play in it". I guess he meant what he said for once.
Now I'm curious to see who they fill those three games with. I see Edina will be one. Will they bring back the Moorhead / Fargo South trip? Or, as I had always wanted, maybe they will stay close to home and add Mahtomedi and St. Thomas?

Re: HM - WBL
Answer: They're not, because they have games against Benilde and Minnetonka before the Schwan Cup.stpaul wrote:How is Hill-Murray going to get that win streak back to 14 without an extra game against White Bear in the Schwan Cup?

Why can't this tournament find a decent venue where it can be held on three consecutive days? Maybe even fill at least 50% of the seats instead of 15% at best. It's pretty clear that the Xcel barely tolerates the Schwan's Cup presence.

Just found the answer to my questions. Looks like its Lakeville South, Edina, and Grand Rapids (Hockey Day). Not a bad non-conference schedule when you add in HM, DE, Cloq, and Roch Century.BodyShots wrote:I see WBL is not playing in it this year...

Thought
Why not just make it a one division 16 team tournament and be done. All that and perhaps if they did this tournament right they might actually draw a decent crowd.
really want to make this a great tournament... invite out of state top teams.... football, and basketball are doing it... why not!

Definitely agree with that. Another question I have is why is it they are holding the first games at Ridder Arena this year and not Mariucci?East Side Pioneer Guy wrote:Why can' this tournament find a decent venue where it can be held on three consecutive days? I went to the first round last year, at Mariucci. Even being significantly smaller than the Xcel, the crowd was still dwarfed by the empty seats. Ridder might be tight, or it could be a good atmosphere. I've been there for youth hockey, and it's a very nice facility. Too bad it doesn't have 5,000 or 6,000 seats.

I think this is the best possible venue for the Schwan Cup as of right now. The Xcel and Mariucci are way too big and rinks in the Super Rink and other rinks, Braemar, SLP, BIG, etc. have too much familiarity within the metro. I think Ridder will fill up nicely and have a great atmosphere. As long as the student sections show up!

Actually, I'd like to see it moved to the Duluth area. Have the Gold division at the Amsoil, Silver at the DECC and the Bronze at the Heritage Arena. Course, don't want to make the Cidiots drive too far now, do we?MnMade-4-Life wrote:... and no teams from the Duluth area eitherMnMade-4-Life wrote:I'd rather watch the best teams skate ... let's keep it in stateCenterIceReportMike wrote:Make it a showcase! lee....
Not new at all, actually used to coach hs hockey here in the cites a few years back. I guess my point is this.... other programs from other states have quality hockey. If we are going to be arrogant to believe that MN HS hockey is the best and others cant compete, that is plain ol bull. Im not saying any other state in the country could compete from top to bottom, but top to top there are a few... Minnesota is not the only state with High School Hockey!

Last year no team from another state could beat EP.
The year before, no team would have ever beaten Tonka during the regular season, (after a 4OT game) maybe
EP was pretty darn good in 08-09. (That Edina team could have beaten anyone out of state)
Before this, maybe MT ST Charles or Boston Catholic Memorial could beat the #1 team.
