Score from Sunday evening
Edina-6
Osseo/Maple Grove-4

Game was played at Osseo’s Tin Bin. The periods were 12 minute stop time.

In the opening period, OMG scored first at the 9 minute mark on a nice three touch pass play. The third player had an easy open goal. The first period ended 1-0. The period was marred with 5 penalties called, but the action was fast.

As in the other games this week, the tenor of the game shifted in the second. The game became wide open with more end to end rushes through standing defenders. The Hornets scored at with a little less than 9 minutes on the clock on a solo rush off an OMG error. A Hornet picked the puck up in a corner crossed in front of the goalie and shot. The puck caught an edge and “popped over” the goalie into the net. Thirty seconds later, the Hornets scored again on a nice passing play off a long carry down the boards.

OMG came back to tie the game off a two on one rush and a nice pass to a breaking open wing. But the Hornets came back to add two goals late in the second and two more early in the third to take a 6-2 lead. OMG rallied late in the third to close the gap to two goals and were pressuring Edina as the game ended.

OMG has improved since their game with Eden Prairie. They made some nice passing plays to score, but lost "it" near the end of the second period. They showed poise in recovering and getting back in the game late.

This was the first Edina game that I saw. The Hornets are small this year. About a third of their squad are returning peewee players; the remaining forwards appear to be first year players. They are clever puck handlers, quick, and as always play with discipline. They are not checkers, but that does not matter this year and it will be an interesting season this year.

Another score from Sunday:

Minnetonka-9
Forest Lake-3

I saw the first period. It was evenly skated between the two teams. The period ended in a 1-1 tie. Then I left. They were playing 15 minute stop time periods. The Rangers must have tired.

Score from Thursday night.

Burnsville-5
Forest Lake-3

Game was played at Burnsville. 12 minute stop time first two periods, 16 minutes running time third period.

This game was a good test for both teams and both teams played well over all considering it is early in the season. Forest Lake opened with pressure in the first minutes, but the Blaze scored first by controlling the puck from a face off in their own end, down to a corner in the Rangers end of the ice. From behind the end line, a Blaze forward passed the puck to a breaking forward on the goalie’s weak side for an easy score to take a 1-0 lead. It was a text book play.

Three minutes later the Blaze scored again off a scramble in front of the Rangers net with sticks flying everywhere. That was not text book. But it counted and put the Blaze up 2-0.

Just three minutes later, Forest Lake found the text book and scored when a Ranger forward controlling the puck in the Blaze zone, skated to the blue line past his own defense man, drawing two Blaze forwards to him, then neatly dropping the pass to his defense behind him. The defense man skated into the face off hash marks and fired at the goalie, the puck bouncing to the opposite side onto a Ranger stick for an easy rap in. It was a nice play and made it a 2-1 game.

The Blaze came back a minute later, scoring on a rebound to take a 3-1 lead as the period ended. It was a nicely skated first period with both teams finding ways to pressure the players on the boards with physical contact, yet avoid the checking call.

In the second period, Forest Lake drew two penalties in the first five minutes and gave up a power play goal. A Blaze forward scored on an upper deck shot from just in front of the Ranger goalie. The referee was positioned perfectly to call puck in as it quickly “roofed” off the top of the net and back out again.

Trailing 4-1, Forest Lake came back to score two goals and narrow the Blaze lead to a single goal. The Ranger’s second goal came on the third rap after the Blaze goalie made a three nice saves in less than five seconds, but couldn’t contain the third rebound as a Ranger forward rapped it in from 10 feet in front of the Blaze net. The Ranger’s next goal came off a nice two on one break with the Ranger goal scorer crossing in front of the Blaze net moving the goalie left to right and then back handing the puck into the net over the goalie’s left outstretched leg pad.

With the score 4-3 and three minutes to go in the second period, the Blaze scored the last goal when they caught the Rangers defense over shifted to the strong side and flipped the puck across the crease to the goalie’s weak side for and easy open net goal.

The third period had its moments, but there were a number of penalties as the game became more wide open. Overall both teams played well. The Rangers have speed in their defense and in their forwards. The Blaze have not played many games this early in the season and showed a little rust. The Rangers should have a good D2 season. For the Blaze, it is too early to tell.

Score from Friday night:

Mounds View-7
Rogers-5

The Super Rink is hosting a USA sponsored, National Junior Prospects League AAA U16 and U18 tourney this week end. Out of town AAA teams such as Pittsburgh (Predators), Phoenix (Firebirds), Tampa Bay and Fort Wayne are entered. Mixed into the tourney are player evaluations and mixed into that was a peewee game between Rogers and Mounds View.

It was quite a game, first period dominated by Rogers, the second by Mounds View, and the third by neither team.

Three 17 minute periods were played. Penalties were 2 minutes long. Tagging up at the blue line allowed. The second period was stopped halfway through to re-surface the ice. Rogers has a 12 forwards and 2 goalies on their team this year. Like New Prague, two of the forwards are girls. Mounds View skated one kid short.

The Royals scored four goals in the opening period. The first came three minutes into the game on a nice three across rush with the puck ending up on the goalie’s weak side for a nice one timer in the net. The second goal came a minute later on a breakaway to put the Royals up 2-0. The third goal was scored halfway through the period on a high hard shot to the goalies left from his right side lower faceoff circle. That made the score 3-0. The fourth came off a scramble thirty second later in front of the Mounds View net to end the first period scoring 4-0.

In the first period, Mounds View had good shots at the net, but the puck was never on the net. That changed for the Mustangs with 15 minutes left in the second period.

On the attack in the Royals zone with a man advantage, a pass from the corner found a Mustang forward alone between the hash marks in front of the Royals goal and he drove the puck into the net with a one timer to cut the score to 4-1. That opened the door for Mounds View.

They added a second goal thirty seconds later when the Royals lost sight of the puck and a Mustang drove the “lost puck” into the net, 4-2. Ten seconds later, the Mustangs scored their third goal in one minute to put themselves back into the game at 4-3.

For the next 5 minutes, the Royals played on edge and the Mustangs keep the pressure up. The Mustangs tied the game at the 9 minute mark when a Mustang forward ended up alone in front of the Royal net, deked the goalie, and flipped the puck into the net. With the game tied 4-4 and the second period half over, the game was stopped and the ice cleaned.

The kids returned to the ice with 8 minutes left in the second period. With 4 minutes remaining, Mounds View took the lead on a penalty shot. A Royal player dove in an attempt to knock the puck off a Mustang’s stick who had a clear breakaway. He caught the puck, but also took the feet out from under the Mounds View player. The second period ended 5-4.

Rogers turned the heat up after losing the lead in the remaining time left in the second period. But the Royals couldn’t sustain the pressure into the third 17 minute period. The game became a ragged, wide open affair with up and down rushes.

Rogers finally scored on one of their rushes as a Royal defense man neatly took apart the Mustang defenders skating full ice to score the tying goal. But Mounds View came right back, scoring 15 seconds later when the puck was rotated to the goalies weak side and a Mustang forward’s shot found a small gap, shoulder high, between the goalie and the post.

One more goal was added to make the final score 7-5.
It was an interesting game. There were other U16/U18 AAA teams being played. The Minnesota Blades were playing an Atlanta Fire team on the next rink. The tourney is still going on this weekend.

From Sunday at the PIC in Plymouth:

Wayzata Gold-6
Waconia-4

Three 15 minute stop time periods were played. Each team had a full roster; Wayzata skated two girls, joining Rogers and New Prague who also are skating two girls on their rosters. Penalties were 2 minutes.

The first period was an up and down affair with both teams skating well. It was cleanly played. With less than 90 seconds on the clock, Waconia scored first when a Waconia forward skated alone in on the Wayzata goalie and tried to “roof” the puck into the net. Instead it slid along the ice into the 5-hole and into the net behind a surprised goalie. The Wildcats added a to the score 30 seconds later on a two on one break. A Waconia forward broke around and into the lone defender putting the puck on the goal and sweeping by the net taking the defender with him. That left the goalie out of position and gave the trailing forward an easy goal. The play happened in less than a second.

Trailing 2-0 as the second period started, the Trojans came out pressing the attack. They scored in the first minute on a rebound to the Waconia goalie’s weak side. They tied the score at 2-2 in an almost identical goal to Waconia’s second goal. After a shot at the net by a charging Trojan, the trailing player flipped the rebound over the goalie before he could fully react.

Halfway through the period, Wayzata scored a controversial goal on a high stick deflection that redirected the puck’s flight from the blue line from the left corner to the right. Some of the kids are small and can high stick a deflection without the stick going over the nets crossbar, but in do so raise the stick above their shoulders. Wayzata added a fourth goal late in the period off another rebound to take a 4-2 lead into the third period.

After a sputtering second period, both teams came out and skated the first 10 minutes of the third period well. It was a fast moving game and both teams had opportunities. With 6 minutes to go in the third, Waconia scored another rebound goal as the shot on the Wayzata’s net dropped on the goalie’s weak side and a Wildcat rapped it into the net. With the score 4-3, Wayzata drew a penalty and the Wildcats tied the game on a power play goal with 3 minutes to go, 4-4.

The tie did not last long. Less than a minute later, a Wayzata pass found a Trojan loose in the slot in front of the Waconia goal for the tie breaker. Wayzata added one more to end the game 6-4.

Both teams skated well considering it is earlier in the season. They showed discipline and passing skills and it worked for both teams. Waconia will be an interesting team to watch this year in D6. The Gold is one of two balanced Wayzata A teams and will be a team to watch in D3.

The refs did miss some high stick calls for some reason in this game, but the refs in these longer peewee games, have to have some skating endurance. The puck moves faster and there are more transitions. As with most peewee games that I have seen this year, there are not a lot of stoppages. On example is few icing calls. Most games this year have had three or less icings because the kids have more time to carry the puck, head down.

I'm curious if the teams were split entirely evenly or if there's a bit of first year/second year to the split.

First D6 game of the season:
Shakopee-6
New Prague-1

Ten days ago, these two teams scrimmaged and played well. Tonight, with the scoreboard on, both teams struggled through three 14 minute stop time periods. It happens every year after Halloween. The kids get a sugar high on Monday and struggle the next day.

Shakopee opened the scoring with a defense man rushing the puck, turning the corner on the New Prague defense, and shaking down the goalie to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead two minutes into the first period. After that, the Sabres drew three successive penalties and held New Prague's power play off the scoreboard.

With less than 5 minutes left in the first, and finally with a full complement of players on the ice, the Sabres scored again on another solo rush to take a 2-0 lead. The Trojans responded by applying their best pressure of the game on the Sabres defense by holding the puck in the Sabre’s zone for most of the remainder of the period. Unfortunately the Trojans couldn’t score.

The second period turned into a struggle for both teams. In the first nine minutes, the play was ragged. The only noteworthy happening was a referee calling a checking penalty on a Trojan as he correctly pinched a Sabre into the boards. Shakopee scored two goals to take a 4-0 lead. The first score was another defensive rush, the second came on a power play in the last two minutes of the period.

The teams continued to struggle in the third. At the 10 minute mark a Trojan tried to loft a puck to another defense man at his blue line, by a Sabre in the middle. The Sabre managed a nice deflection of the puck in the air, knocked the puck forward, skated a couple strides and buried the puck in the upper left corner of the net. It was a nice play. Late in the game, the Sabres added another goal on another defensive solo rush to take a 6-0 lead. With a minute left in their game, a New Prague forward backhanded a puck through the Shakopee’s goalie 5-hole to end the scoring 6-1.

A couple years ago, Buffalo had a defensive group that loved to rush the puck and score. They had a nickname, the “Riverboat Gamblers”. Shakopee may just have inherited the title. This was New Prague’s first game at D6 peewee A level. They will improve.

I don't know. But this much I can tell you. If my information is correct, each team has 8 returning peewee A or B1 players. The Gold has two girls and the Blue has one girl. Where the remaining 7 Gold players skated last year, I don't know. Where the remaining 8 Blue players skated last year I don't know. But it looks balanced to me.

Just an FYI, Wayzata PWA team from last year that took 3rd in State had only one 1st year PeeWee on its team.
