Two scores from Tuesday night:

Score from Ames Arena:
Lakeville North-6
Cottage Grove-0

In D8, games are timed to be played in one hour of ice. D8 teams are required to use an hour clock, but not always. Common sense generally applies as a game winds down.

At Ames tonight, these teams played a ragged game. That was surprising. Cottage Grove played an excellent game tying Andover 1-1 three days before. But tonight, the Wolfpack showed none of the aggressiveness and sharp play they had in tying the Huskies. But this is kids playing a game. And it shows.

Lakeville North had their first practice three weeks ago and opened their season three days later, losing big to Edina. So the Panthers can be forgiven and given a pass, they are just getting rolling. And the Panthers played the game with a short bench, going with two centers.

The first period started with ragged play that created a number of stoppages. Though it was a more physical period, there were no penalties and no scoring. And it ended with ragged play. The Panthers had the best scoring chances including two nice tip-in attempts on 2 two-on-one attacks that the Wolfpack goalie handled aggressively. Each time he followed the puck across the crease, sliding over and blocking the tip-in attempt as it hit the breaking forwards stick.

Lakeville North broke the scoreless tie one minute into the second period as a result of a stick scramble in front of the net (no checking, means poke checking especially in front of the net). Two minutes later the Panthers scored off a rebound to take a 2-0 lead. That goal set the pattern for North’s goal scoring for the night. The last half of the second period became a series of stoppages with four penalties called and a series of off-sides calls made. At the 4 minute mark, North scored again on a rebound goal to take a 3-0 lead into the third period.

One minute into the third, the Panthers scored another rebound goal. The Panthers were putting the puck on the goalie and the non-shooting forwards were attacking the crease for the rebound and it worked. They ended up with 5 rebound goals as the running time clock expired with two minutes left on the scoreboard. The final score was 6-0.

Cottage Grove played tentatively tonight and they lost the game. North played better at times and put more pressure on Cottage Grove, but they also had long periods of ragged play. Not a good game.

A second score from Tuesday night at Hayes Arena in Apple Valley:

Lakeville South-5 or 6
Eastview-0

Another game that ended when the running time ran out at the end of the second period. Lakeville South came out strong in the first period with two of their three lines dominating play. Their #1 line played the best game of any line this year; they scored all three of the Cougars first period goals in a cleanly skated game with few penalties. Eastview is a good team with a lot of speed at forwards, still the Cougars tended to dominate the play.

Overall, it was a clean game, with few penalties. But it became a game that might bode the direction of games this year as the season moves on. With both teams possessing great speed, the overall play was fast. Late in the second period, with Lakeville South on the attack, a Lightning player was skating all out in his defensive corner and lost stride and took a bad hit into the boards.

The rink turned quiet as everybody started to worry about the down kid. After some talk between themselves, the referees called a 5-minute major on one of the Lakeville players. It was a penalty I did not see, but could have been warranted. With the kid still on the ice 5 minutes later, the refs decided to give the Lakeville player a game penalty and took him off the ice. An ambulance came, took the kid off the ice, the game was over. The game was called and the Cougars won.

I have watched a fair number of peewee games in the past six weeks; my concern is that as these teams improve, the speed of the game will increase dramatically.

If a kid is hurt severely, it is because enough “force” or energy has been delivered to his body to cause damage. Speed is a multiplier of the amount of force that is delivered and can be generated by the kid themselves when they hit inanimate objects like boards.

Checking can deliver that increased force, but checking can also be viewed as a “braking” mechanism, slowing down play at the peewee level. My concern is that as these kids now have no brakes and like racecar drivers will go wide open and faster as the season progresses. They will really hurt themselves in ways far more dangerous than being checked.

As always, and I believe I can speak for everyone at Hayes last night, we hope the injured Lightning kid is back at practice today. That has been the norm in past season. Nobody wants to see kids hurt.

Agree 100%, except I would add "racecar drivers with no seatbelts".

Crow River 5
Minneapolis 4

Good game. Crow's #27 is huge fast and skilled, without him it's a 4-2 Minneapolis win. He simply stepped around the D more than once.

Saw a lot of checked checks -- i.e. kids impulsively going to check, then backing off, which was interesting. Refs were pretty hands off. Plenty of legal body contact.

We aren't seriously going to see people start to complain that the game is too fast now, are we? I really don't care one way or the other on the checking rule, but that is a pretty weak reason to have checking. I would hope that any kid that can skate well enough to make a PeeWee A team can control himself at the same time. They still have brakes, they all learned to stop back in mini mites.

Score from Wednesday night at Bielenberg Arena:

Woodbury-4
South St. Paul/Inver Grove Heights-0

In the first D8 game of the season for both teams, Woodbury looked to be the odds on favorite in this game. SSP/IGH has struggled in the early season and entered this game coming off a non-league 5-0 loss to Sibley last weekend. Woodbury came into the game losing to a tough Prior Lake team 3-2 last weekend.

The first period was ragged. Woodbury scored an early goal one minute into the first. The goal came on a wrap around after a long scrum and stick scramble in front of the SSP/IGH’s net. The Predators continued to dominated SSP/IGH, bottling them up in their own zone for long periods of time. Four penalties were called in the last half of the period to add to the raggedness. With less than 30 seconds in the period, Woodbury added another goal off a scrum in front of the SSP/IGH’s net.

There was no change in play in the second period. Woodbury continued to dominate the SSP/IGH’s team in the SSP/IGH’s zone. The SSP/IGH goalie played his position well and denied the Predators a goal until the 5 minute mark. A Woodbury forward found himself alone 5 feet in front of the net. He took a hard shot, but the puck instead of rising, slid along the ice through the surprised goalie’s 5-hole. With a minute left in the period, Woodbury scored the fourth and final goal of the game.

In the third, SSP/IGH finally got rolling and pressured the Predators for the first half of the period before taking a checking from behind penalty. It cost them their “unfairplay” point and the game turned ragged again with many stoppages. Woodbury appeared to draw their own checking from behind penalty with 19 seconds left in the game and that could have cost them their “unfairplay” point.

Despite struggling on offense, the SSP/IGH team played a better game than they did on Saturday. They improved. Woodbury remains an unknown in this early season, but that 3-2 loss to Prior Lake looks impressive.

Agree. This makes no sense. We want to emphasize the finer points of the game like passing, shooting and skating -- oops, I guess not. First the checking rule, next they'll be required to wear boots. I'm indifferent to the checking rule too, but to suggest that checking slows the game down and therefore actually makes it safer is kinda silly, I don't care what Canadian doctors say about it. (They're all socialists anyway!!)

checking does slow the game down. The no checking rule allows the kids to skate end to end with their head down trying to dangle the puck. I guarantee if that kid got lit up once he would pass the puck more

Scores from the Mankato Tourney played last week at Minnesota State University in Mankato:

Friday, Nov 11, pool play:
Mankato-18
Mitchell (SD)-1

Shakopee-10
Albert Lea-1

Saturday, Nov 12 AM, pool play:
Waconia-16
Mitchell (SD)-1

Albert Lea-4
New Ulm-3

Saturday, Nov 12 PM, pool play:
Mankato-5
Waconia-3

Shakopee-10
New Ulm-1

Sunday, Nov 13:
5th place: New Ulm-16; Mitchell (SD)-1
3rd place: Waconia-16; Albert Lea-1
1st place: Shakopee-1; Mankato-0

Mankato looks tough this year in splitting their games with two D6 teams. Irondale better watch out when the Knights face the Mavericks in the opening round of the SuperRink turkey day tourney next week.

As for the big scores, the D9 teams are usually just getting rolling and improve as the season progresses. That happens every year. I suspect Mitchell is in the same boat as the D9 teams, but a little further behind. It would be nice if South Dakota teams like Mitchell, Sioux Falls, and Watertown could be part of D4 and be eligible for Minnesota Hockey tourneys. It would help develop hockey in that part of the state. South Dakota teams often opt out of playing in the USA Hockey national tourneys.

The Youth Association located in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul is called Highland Central. The Association name is because of the merger between the St. Paul Highland and the St. Paul Central Youth Associations a long time ago.

Eden Prairie 6
Minnetonka 3

Went to see this game and was disappointed at the quality of play. Well over a dozen penalties and there could have been more. Exhibit A in defense of leaving checking at the Pee Wee level. No flow, no creativity. Just a lot of kids reaching with sticks, unsure of what they could do to defend. The D6 ref's didn't seem to know what to do either. Contact allowed occasionally, but whistled as a penalty minutes later.
Needless to say, two excellent D6 programs are struggling to adapt. It will be interesting to see the Fair Play point totals by Feb!

Scores from the Spring Lake Park tourney’s Friday first round games (8 team tourney, bracket play, 12 minute stop time periods)

Mahtomedi-4
Spring Lake Park-2

The first period was fairly clean skated with Spring Lake Park having the edge in play. Halfway through the first period, a Panther defense man attacked the Zephyr net, beating the defense on the outside, cut in front of the net and scored through a small opening between the goalie’s leg and the pipe. That was only goal scored in the first.

The pace remained fast for the first half of the second period. Spring Lake Park took a 2 goal lead at the 6 minute mark, scoring off a rebound that ended up on a Panther forward’s stick all alone in front of the net. He sniped the puck into the net. The Zephyr’s came roaring back a minute later on a 3 man rush with the puck passed from wing to wing across the Panther goal who shot high. The puck deflected off the goalie’s glove into the upper left corner. With a minute to go in the period, the Zephyr’s tied the score at 2-2 on a shot that found the goalie’s 5-hole.

The game became a little ragged as both teams tired in the third. No one could find the net until the 6 minute mark when the Zephyrs scored to take a 3-2 lead. They added a power play goal with a minute left in the game to end the scoring.

In the second game of the tourney:

Irondale-5
Buffalo-2

The game got off to a fast start as the teams locked up with one another. No one could find the net until Buffalo drew a penalty with 2 minutes left in the period. The Knights scored 15 seconds later on quick pass from behind the Bison’s net to a Knight in the slot who "one shot" the puck pass the goalie. With 5 seconds left in the period, a Knight center worked his way through the Bison defense, found a wing on the goalie’s left side who scored by lifting the puck at a sharp angle over the goalie. At the end of the first, Irondale led Buffalo 2-0.

The game slowed in the second period caused in part by Buffalo penalties. And they hurt the Bison. In all, the Knights scored four power play goals tonight. The third goal, like the first, came 15 seconds into a Knights power play at the 10 minute mark. The fourth goal, another top shelfer (upper left corner), came less than a minute into a Knights power play at the 5 minute mark.

Not satisfied with success, the Knights let the Bison “out of the pen”. The Knights drew a penalty a minute after the fourth goal putting the Bison on the power play. A Bison forward took one of those side shots , throwing the puck at the net. It rang twice off the top bar and everybody went “it is in, no it is out, no it is in” until a Bison forward ended the debate by putting the rebound clearly in the net. That caused a Bison stampede as they took over the game and scored with under a minute left in the second period.

Trailing 4-1 at the start of the third, the stampede continued. The Bison mounted a lot of pressure on the Knights but could not score. The at the 5 minute mark, the Bison drew a penalty and 30 seconds later, drew another penalty. Skating 5 on 3, they killed the two man part of the penalty; but the Knights got their 4th power play goal 5 on 4.

A minute later, the Bison attack the Knight's goal, thought they had a score, but had the goal waved off. The ref blew the whistle when he lost sight of the puck in the crease, but the whistle came just before the puck ended up in the net. It happened to the Bison three times. The ref was correct all three times, but the timing was so close.

Buffalo played a tough game, which will not make the other D5 teams happy. Irondale had the Bison all penned up, stopped passing the puck, and then relaxed. It almost cost them the game.

In the third game of the evening:

Armstrong-3
Sibley-1

Sibley got off to a quick start scoring 20 seconds into the game when the puck rebounded off the goalie to a General breaking into the faceoff circle. He put the rebound into the low left corner. The puck never left the ice.

To further frustrate Armstrong in the first period, they then drew two straight penalties; but managed to hold the Generals off the scoreboard. It paid off. At the 5 minute mark, Armstrong tied the score. The goal came off a scrum in front of the General’s goalie. They took the lead a minute later. After four consecutive saves by the General's goalie, an Armstrong forward finally got the 5th shot past the goalie into the net. It was like a pre-game warm-up drill with the Sibley defense always late to the shooter. The first period started out evenly played, but Sibley slowed as the period wound down.

The second period opened with both teams slowing. Armstrong got the final score of the game on a power play goal at the 7 minute mark. It came off a scrum in front of the Sibley net with the puck ending up on an Armstrong forward’s stick five feet in front of an open goal. He put the puck and Sibley away for the night.

The play picked up in the third period, but neither team could score. Both goalies made great stops and played well. Sibley pulled their goalie with just under 2 minutes to go. The Generals were able to mount pressure in the Armstrong zone, but couldn’t score. A late period penalty ended the Generals night.

It was a good game, fairly well played by both teams. Both teams have potential in their leagues.

The final Spring Lake Park tourney game from Friday night:

Roseville-2
Wayzata Blue-1

Some may consider this a surprise, but it was just a well played game between two good teams. Roseville played well tonight after struggling in other games. The Trojans always play well, tonight was not exception.

The action was fast paced in the first period. Both teams skated three forward lines. Clearly, each team had dominant line. At the 5 minute mark of the first period, Wayzata scored on a blast from a breaking forward who put all he had into the shot. It gave Wayzata a 1-0 lead as the first period ended.

The second period started the same way until Wayzata drew a penalty at the 8 minute mark. The Wayzata bench tried to get the right kids out on the penalty kill, but had trouble with three kids out on the ice trying to figure out who should take the bench. The ref decided for them and sent one kid to the penalty box ruling too many men on the ice. Down 5 on 3, the Trojans gave up the tying goal when a Roseville defense man from the point miss-hit a shot, putting the puck in the air in slow wobbly spin, that was deflected by another Roseville forward into the net.

Then Wayzata gambled, miss-matching the top lines, by putting their top line out against one of Roseville’s weaker lines. It almost worked as the Trojans applied a tremendous amount of pressure on the Roseville defense. But they could not score and after a stoppage in play, out came Roseville’s top line against one of Wayzata’s weaker lines. The Raider’s center powered his way into a shot on the Trojans goal and a Raider wing picked up the rebound, put the puck on the net and followed up at the crease to punch his own rebound in to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead as the second period ended.

The third period was the best played period of the opening round of the tourney as both teams hammered at one another. Neither could score and both had some great chances. It was a great game to see. The Wayzata Blue will be tough this year; Roseville has improved their play since they beat Apple Valley early in the season.

Saturday games will match Mahtomedi and Irondale in the first semifinal game and will match Armstrong and Roseville in the second semifinal game. It was a good opening tourney round of peewee A hockey.

Scores from the Superior Wisconsin Tourney being played this weekend:

Friday pool play:
Denfeld-3
Superior-2

Hermantown-9
Mesabi East/Eveleth-0

Highland Central-5
Thunder Bay Elks-0

Saturday AM pool play:
Superior-4
Mesabi East/Eveleth-1

Hermantown-11
Thunder Bay Elks-1

Highland came into this tourney beating White Bear Lake twice this past week,3-2 and 5-2. Hermantown came into the tourney unbeaten at 7-0 with wins over Duluth East, Cloquet, Anoka, and Rosemount.
Hermantown and Highland have yet to play Denfeld in their pool game; but those two teams look like they will meet in the Championship game. Highland’s has one other pool game against Mesabi East/Eveleth.

Denfeld, Superior, and Thunder Bay Elks will likely contend for third place; Denfeld has the toughest row to hoe and it would come down to tie breakers to determine who would play Superior in the 3rd place game and who would play Mesabi East/Eveleth in the 5th place game.

OK Bluegold I will start the conversation. How does Wayzata Blue tie OMG who is a great team in my opinion, and lose to a very average Roseville team? I'm starting to miss the one team dominance of the Trojans.
