Let me be the first to point out:

PL beat LVS (three days ago), their site has fuzzy math.

Highland and Hermantown have a lot to prove before they are top 10.

It ain't "fuzzy math"...it's an objective, unbiased formula based on strength of schedule and goal differential (among other things). It's not perfect (no ranking system is), but it's probably the best one out there.

Highland has some pretty good wins (White Bear Lake, twice)....I'd say they belong in the top 10, for now. Remember that a ranking is only a snapshot of where these teams stack up as of this week. It's not a predictor of where these teams will finish....

Agree, no fuzzy math, you can look in detail at the rankings and pull out the exact formula they use. After 25 - 30 games it becomes very accurate, by end of season it is almost dead on and the cool thing is it is 100% stats no humans or bias involved! Look at it as "Power Rankings", South to date has a better goal margin against slightly better opponents, and yes it is snap shot of right now, next week PL could be on top if they have a few big wins and South has a few average or bad games. And you can't milk your schedule as an example if South plays a team that ranks 8 points lower than them it does not matter if they win 22 - 0, the game will actually hurt their ranking slightly.

I get your point on being objective and a power ranking system. But isn't the main objective to win? PL has beaten everyone and by beaten everyone, I mean some very good teams (the EP tourney was loaded), including LVS.

LVS has lost twice....PL zero. Until they lose...they are number 1.

Sidenote: this takes into account that LVS did outplay PL on Saturday, but wins head to head is the truest form of calculation.

Sorry.

"LVS has lost twice....PL zero. Until they lose...they are number 1"

So what you are saying is that PL should be tied for #1 with Hermantown and Luverne? They are both unbeaten

I disagree. If you want to rank teams, you need to put most of the weight in strength of schedule. LVS strength of schedule is a bit more difficult than PL (at the moment), plus their AGD is higher than PLs, thus they are ranked slightly ahead of PL. There are other teams that are ranked lower than teams they've beaten....For example, Edina beat Stillwater, yet Stillwater is ranked higher because they have a higher AGD than Edina.

Just because PL beat LVS in one game, does not mean that they are necessarily a better team overall. They were better in that one game, sure, but we all know that the better team doesn't always win. The best team will be determined at the end of the season at the State Tournament.

It's been said quite a few times...there is no perfect system. You need to let this play out a little while. As more games get played, the rankings will adjust.

Sorry...this is way more accurate than above

http://youthhockeyhub.com/youth-hockeyrankings/

As for Luverne and H'Town: very funny. PL has beaten a ton of top 20 teams-- isn't that enough?

Totally agree on letting it shake out.

I personally think LVS is the better team, but find it hard to believe they are #1 based on their field of work.

PS I'm not a PL parent

Thats because it is a "Poll" of human rankers that place votes for teams, the stats ranking above is based on a math formula only this is why it should be considered a "power ranking" not a poll. You will see that by end of season the 2 come very very close to each other.

There is no comparison.

MyHockeyRankings offers an unbiased evaluation of a teams entire body of work. The players themselves have control based on how they perform game in and game out. They become more accurate as there is crossover between teams. In the early stages, teams from a geographic pocket who only play each other can be ranked higher or lower than they should be, but once interaction becomes significant, the ratings become extremely accurate.

Pools like the one on the hub site is just a pool of opinions from team parents and coaches, who all have their own bias's and agendas. They mean absolutely nothing and say more about those offering opinions than they do about the teams they are "ranking".

They shouldn't be in the same conversation.

Only problem with it, especially early on is that it adds points for goal differential which I think does alter the real rankings, especially early on. You see some teams beating others by 10, 15, and in one case 20 goals. They have a much lower initial power score, but then get ranked high because of the goals scored. No system is perfect, but they should limit the gap in goals to count in the rankings--I think it would lead to an even more accurate ranking.

They do limit it to 7 goal differential per game.

myhockey does not have rankings set up for Minnesota B or C hockey. You could go to the website myhockey.com and send an e-mail to the administrator asking to set those levels up in the system but as the rankings would be based on the input of scores, it may not be of much value until others get on board with entering their teams scores.

I've been watching this forum for two years and this is the ONLY post that has ever prompted me to want to create a username.

Myhockeyrankings.com WOULD be accurate, in my opinion, if they actually included all the games. Some districts do not have volunteers to input their scores and even if they do (because I had to double check to make sure our district did) apparently they don't feel the need to input all the scores. If you're not a paying member or the district volunteer inputting scores is very tedious and they are usually not posted because no one will "verify" them.
If you don't have all the games played you can't be an accurate source, especially if the major part of your formula is based on difficulty of schedule.

If they got everything on track, I would agree it's a great source because it is mathematical instead of opinion (because no one's opinion really changes) but I would argue that it's not always completely accurate by the end of the year, it's peewee hockey, there are always surprises. :)

The biggest problem with the ranking system is there is way too much weight given to goal differential. They néed to factor the win loss record more with the SOS. Goal differential should only have a minimal effect. That said, no system is perfect.

This is the best ranking system out there. Its usually spot on in almost all cases in the top 10 if you factor in the whole year. I love it and look forward to wed to check it out.

Unless things have changed pretty sure individual team managers enter their scores.
